A low-cost VPS can relay a prerecorded, already-encoded music video to YouTube around the clock, but its advertised monthly price does not tell you whether the included outbound transfer will cover the stream. Start with your total bitrate and the exact region’s allowance, then weigh the bill against the work of managing Linux and recovering a dropped broadcast.

For one steady loop, DigitalOcean’s Basic Droplet with 2 vCPUs, 2 GiB of memory and 3,000 GiB of listed transfer is a starting candidate, not a universal winner. The published specification does not establish performance for your workload, and it should not be treated as sufficient for transcoding, live DJ production or multiple outputs.

Define the stream you are pricing

The useful distinction is whether the VPS is relaying a file that has already been encoded or creating the broadcast in real time. In the first case, a process reads the prepared media and sends it to YouTube. That is a much narrower job than rendering video, mixing live inputs, applying effects and encoding each frame on the server.

This comparison assumes one prerecorded visual and music loop, one YouTube output and an already-encoded file. If you plan to broadcast a camera, assemble OBS scenes, add visualisers or convert formats on the VPS, you have a different workload. Do not infer from a provider’s CPU and memory specification that it can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate continuously; no server test was performed for this article.

Before comparing providers, settle on a target format and bitrate that YouTube accepts for your channel. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance gives recommended H.264 video bitrates of 6 Mbps for 720p30, 8 Mbps for 720p60, 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p60. Those are video figures: add the audio bitrate to estimate the total stream payload. YouTube also lists other ingestion formats and protocols, so check its current guidance rather than assuming that every encoder setting works in every configuration.

The VPS choice cannot settle music rights. Confirm that you have rights to the audio and visuals before putting a continuous stream online, and check YouTube’s current official policy. Hosting a file or keeping a stream connected does not grant permission to use its contents. For a related practical issue, see this guide to copyright blocks on Hindi meditation music streams.

Compare transfer against a month of streaming

A continuous stream sends data out for the full broadcast, so transfer can be more important than the VM’s headline cost. A straightforward estimate is total bitrate in bits per second multiplied by the number of seconds streamed, then divided by eight to convert bits to bytes. The calculation should use the combined audio-and-video bitrate, not video alone.

For a 30-day month, a stream held at a total 6 Mbps would send about 1.94 TB of decimal payload. At 10 Mbps total, it would send about 3.24 TB. These are arithmetic estimates before protocol overhead, reconnects or other outbound traffic from the same account. If your video is 6 Mbps and audio adds to it, the payload is greater than the 6 Mbps example. Leave room rather than planning right up to a provider’s allowance.

Total sustained bitrate Approximate payload for 30 days What to check
6 Mbps 1.94 TB Confirm whether audio is already included in this total.
10 Mbps 3.24 TB Compare with the region’s allowance and leave overhead margin.

The table uses decimal terabytes, while providers may state allowances in GiB. Those units are not interchangeable: 1 TB is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, whereas a GiB is based on 1,073,741,824 bytes. Convert consistently when checking whether a plan has enough room. Also note whether the provider pools transfer across several machines or accounts, and whether inbound traffic is treated differently from outbound traffic.

Overage terms matter if the stream crosses the included amount. DigitalOcean’s billing documentation says additional outbound transfer is billed at $0.01/GiB, as listed on DigitalOcean’s site in October 2026. AWS documents charges for excess Lightsail outbound transfer; the applicable regional allowance and current charge should be checked on AWS’s own page before purchase. A seemingly inexpensive instance can cost more than expected if a month of payload exceeds its regional allowance.

For details on setting a stable encoder bitrate before doing this calculation, use the YouTube ingest bitrate guide. Choose a representative setting, include audio, and calculate for the period you expect to run. Then compare transfer, overage, tax, add-ons and renewal terms rather than ranking plans by their smallest advertised VM price.

Assess DigitalOcean’s starting candidate

DigitalOcean’s pricing page lists a Basic Droplet configuration with 2 vCPUs, 2 GiB of memory, 60 GiB SSD and 3,000 GiB of transfer at $18 per month, as listed on DigitalOcean’s site in October 2026. That makes it a candidate to evaluate for a single already-encoded loop. It is a vendor-published configuration and price, not an independent test, a checkout guarantee for India or a promise of uninterrupted streaming.

DigitalOcean lists Bangalore among its datacentre locations. That does not prove that this exact size is available there when you create an account. Confirm the region and the configuration in the current control panel, then check the final checkout amount and any extras. DigitalOcean’s documentation describes transfer as pooled across a team’s Droplets, so do not assume the listed amount is a dedicated quota reserved entirely for this stream. Check how other resources in that team affect the balance.

For the assumed workload, compare the calculated monthly payload with the listed transfer allowance and keep margin for overhead and other use. A 6 Mbps total stream’s arithmetic estimate is below 3,000 GiB once units are converted, but the margin can narrow when the audio bitrate is additional, transfer is shared, or other services use the account. At 10 Mbps total, the estimated monthly payload is already above 3,000 GiB in equivalent decimal-versus-binary terms; that configuration therefore needs a careful allowance and cost check rather than an assumption that the base plan covers it.

A familiar alternative is Amazon Lightsail. AWS lists a Linux/Unix bundle with 1 GiB memory, 2 vCPUs, 40 GB SSD and 2 TB standard transfer at $5 per month, as listed on AWS’s site in October 2026. AWS says Mumbai-region bundles receive half the transfer allowance listed for standard bundles. In practice, compare the exact Mumbai allowance and excess-transfer terms with your calculated payload; the standard figure on the pricing page alone is not the India-region answer. Confirm the selected bundle and checkout details on the Lightsail pricing page and its transfer allowance FAQ.

Neither example earns a blanket recommendation. DigitalOcean’s cited configuration has a larger published transfer figure, while Lightsail’s lower listed starting price can be relevant for a lighter transfer need if the exact regional terms fit. The former may be a more plausible candidate for the stated single-loop assumption, but availability, transfer usage, final cost and your appetite for administration decide whether it suits you.

Check region and actual availability

A provider naming an Indian region does not mean every plan can be created there at every moment. Before committing, look for the exact size in the region selector and check that its transfer terms apply there. DigitalOcean’s availability documentation is useful alongside the pricing page, but the live configuration flow is the practical confirmation for your account. The Bangalore location is a possibility to verify, not a guarantee for the cited plan.

Region can affect administration and the path between your VPS and YouTube’s ingest endpoint. A nearby region may be convenient, but proximity alone does not prove a stable route or better stream health. Use YouTube’s recommended ingest settings and a representative test rather than selecting solely by a map. YouTube says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP video protocol.” Read the rest of the YouTube encoder guidance for current protocol and encoder details.

Include more than the VM line in your comparison. Check taxes, storage or networking add-ons, whether an IPv4 address has a separate charge, the renewal price and how usage is measured. These terms can change, so any amount quoted here is tied to the vendor’s listed price in October 2026, not a promise of the price you will see later or in a particular checkout.

Account for setup and ongoing oversight

A VPS is self-managed. You are responsible for choosing and maintaining the operating system, installing and configuring the relay or encoder process, protecting the stream key, applying updates and noticing when the broadcast stops. A server that is running is not necessarily sending a healthy stream: the process can fail, the media file can end, the connection can break or YouTube can report an ingest problem.

Plan recovery before you start. The playback process should resume or restart after a failure, and you need a way to learn that a restart has happened or that the stream has remained offline. Test the entire chain with the actual file, audio, bitrate and destination. YouTube’s live control room and stream health indications can help you verify the incoming broadcast; do not treat a VPS specification as a substitute for checking what viewers receive.

Security is part of the operating work. Keep the stream key out of public scripts and screenshots, limit access to the machine, and use a deliberate process for replacing credentials if they are exposed. Make sure the video is present after a reboot and that your service configuration launches the intended file rather than an old test. If you have not administered Linux before, allow time to learn these tasks or ask someone qualified to set them up and explain how to check them.

A low-power PC at home can be a different kind of compromise: it avoids a monthly VPS configuration but makes your own electricity, broadband and local power continuity part of the system. The all-day low-power PC guide for India can help you compare that approach with a rented machine. If the real burden is managing a process, protecting a key and watching for drops, a managed loop service such as StreamNeo removes that server-administration work for an uploaded file, while you still need to check the service’s current limits and recovery terms.

Know when this is no longer a small relay

The resource assumption changes as soon as the VPS must do more than send prepared media. Real-time encoding can consume substantial CPU, and filters, animated overlays, scene composition and several outputs increase the work further. A 2-vCPU specification does not establish that any particular resolution and frame rate will encode without dropped frames. Do not buy the cited plan on that assumption.

For a live DJ set, a camera feed or changing OBS scenes, test the actual production chain at the resolution, frame rate and audio quality you intend to use. Watch CPU and memory while the stream runs, inspect YouTube stream health and test how the setup behaves during an internet interruption or process restart. If encoding is near the machine’s limits in a short test, a longer continuous run is not a sound way to discover that the workload needs more headroom.

Multiple simultaneous outputs also change both resource use and transfer accounting. Each destination can require another outbound stream, and a higher total bitrate increases monthly payload. Establish how many outputs you need, whether each requires its own encode, and whether the provider’s transfer pool is shared with other workloads. Price the complete design, not just one VM.

For a single pre-encoded loop, prepare the file in advance and keep the VPS’s task narrow. The guide to encoding a video playlist for YouTube Live can help you think through the file before upload or relay. If you need live production, test with representative content and choose resources based on observed workload; if you do not want to operate a server, compare managed options on their current terms instead.

Before committing, compare the operating options on the pricing page. When the file and channel are ready, start free — 24-hour trial, no card.

FAQ

Which VPS plan is enough for a 24/7 YouTube stream in India?

There is no universal answer because the stream’s total bitrate, regional transfer allowance and operational workload differ. For one prerecorded, already-encoded loop, DigitalOcean’s cited 2-vCPU, 2-GiB configuration is a starting candidate if the exact plan is available in the selected region and the transfer calculation fits. It is not evidence that the same plan can encode live video or support several outputs.

How much bandwidth does a 24/7 YouTube livestream use?

At a constant total bitrate of 6 Mbps, a 30-day month is about 1.94 TB of decimal payload; at 10 Mbps it is about 3.24 TB. Use total audio-plus-video bitrate and allow for overhead, reconnects and other traffic. Check whether the provider quotes TB or GiB before comparing the result with its limit.

Is the lowest advertised VPS price the cheapest way to stream?

Not necessarily. A lower-priced bundle can include less transfer, and AWS says Mumbai Lightsail bundles have half the standard listed transfer allowance. Compare regional transfer, potential excess charges, taxes and administration effort; a managed option may suit you better if you do not want to maintain Linux, but check its current terms.

Can I use the cited 2-vCPU plan for a live DJ stream or transcoding?

The published configuration does not answer that question, and it was not tested for this workload. Live inputs, encoding, effects or several outputs can require more CPU, memory and transfer than relaying a prepared file. Benchmark the actual production chain and leave headroom before relying on it continuously.
