There is no dependable single GB figure for a month of YouTube playlist videos in India. Your storage use depends on how many minutes you download, the quality you select, and whether new videos are added to the playlist.

Measure a representative sample at your intended download quality, then scale that result to the minutes you expect to save during the month. Treat the answer as a planning estimate, not a fixed allowance: video sizes vary, and app downloads are not permanent archive files.

Why there is no single monthly storage answer

A month is a length of time, not a fixed amount of video. If you download a short playlist once, it may occupy far less space than a long playlist you refresh often. Even two playlists with the same running time can use different amounts of storage when their videos and selected download quality differ.

YouTube Help explains that higher-quality downloads take up more device space, but does not publish a universal GB-per-minute figure. So a number such as “X GB for a month” would not be a reliable answer for every phone, playlist or setting. Use your own device and a sample from the playlist instead.

It also matters whether you mean space occupied by downloaded videos or all space used by YouTube and your phone. The app, cached data, photos, messages and other apps compete for the same device storage. Your estimate should account for the video downloads you plan to keep while leaving room for ordinary device use.

For example, a devotional playlist downloaded for offline listening during a journey has a different storage pattern from a study playlist that you download again whenever it receives new lessons. The useful starting question is not simply “How much space does a YouTube download take?” It is “How many minutes will I download at my chosen quality, and how much did comparable videos use on this device?”

Choose the download quality you intend to use

In the YouTube app, open Settings → Background & downloads → Download quality and select the setting you are actually likely to use. The wording can change as the app is updated, so check the current menu on your device. YouTube's offline viewing help says higher-quality videos may use more data, take longer to appear in Downloads and take up more device space.

Do not estimate at one quality and then switch to another for most of the month. That would make your sample a poor guide. If you are not sure which setting suits you, try a few videos at the qualities available in your app and compare both the viewing experience and the space used. Fine detail may matter more for a lesson with on-screen writing than for a familiar audio-led bhajan video.

Choice to check What changes Practical check
Download quality Higher quality can occupy more space Choose the setting you plan to use, then keep it fixed during the sample
Playlist minutes More downloaded video generally means more space required Count only the videos you expect to download, not just the playlist's current total
Storage location Internal storage and a compatible SD card draw on different capacity Check whether your Android device supports SD-card downloads before buying a card

The table is for comparing decisions, not assigning a file size to each quality. YouTube does not provide a universal size for each minute of every video. A lower setting may be a sensible choice if the screen is small and space is tight; a higher setting may suit you when detail matters and the phone has room.

Measure space used by a representative sample

Pick sample videos that resemble the playlist you intend to download. Include a typical short video and a longer one if both occur regularly. A sample made only of short clips will mislead you about a playlist dominated by long recordings. Likewise, a sample made up of one unusually long programme may not represent a playlist of brief lessons.

First note the device's available storage. You can use the phone's storage view or the YouTube app's Background & downloads screen. Then download the sample at the quality you selected. After the downloads have finished, check available space again in the same view if possible. The difference is your observed storage use for those sample videos.

Write down each video's duration and add them together. For instance, if your sample consists of two videos, add the duration shown for each before comparing it with the observed space change. Keep the arithmetic in the same units throughout: convert the total to minutes if you are going to calculate a GB-per-minute rate.

The measure will not be perfectly precise. Other phone activity during the test can change free space, and the app may display rounded values. For a cleaner comparison, avoid installing apps, recording video or downloading other files between the before and after checks. If the result looks implausible, repeat with a larger or more varied sample rather than assuming the first reading is exact.

Some videos may not offer a Download control, or may show an eligibility prompt. In India, availability and requirements can vary by video; YouTube's selected-country help page includes India and notes that some downloads require Premium. Check the chosen video's actual Download control rather than assuming all videos are eligible or that all require Premium.

Scale the sample to your expected month

Use this formula:

Estimated download storage = measured GB per minute × planned playlist minutes for the month + chosen reserve

To find measured GB per minute, divide the space used by the sample by the sample's total duration in minutes. Then estimate how many minutes you expect to download in the month. Multiply those minutes by the measured rate, and add a reserve you choose for playlist additions and normal device use.

Keep the calculation anchored to downloads, not simply to hours of listening. If you replay the same videos offline without downloading them again, that is different from downloading new videos each day. If you remove a video and later download it again, count that space when planning for the period in which it will be stored. Make your monthly minutes reflect the files you expect to have on the device at once, not every minute you might watch if old downloads are regularly removed.

Suppose you use the sample rate from several representative videos and expect to save a certain number of playlist minutes over the month. The multiplication gives a working estimate for those videos at that setting. It does not guarantee that the next month will match: the new videos may be longer, encoded differently, or selected at another quality. Use the result as a budget to test against available storage, then revise it when your viewing or download habits change.

There is no official reserve size to add. Choose one based on how often the playlist changes and how much space your phone needs for other uses. A channel that adds a new long recording every few days needs a more generous personal margin than a static list downloaded once. Label the reserve as your own planning choice, not a YouTube requirement.

If the sample result is larger than the space you can spare, reduce the planned minutes, choose a lower quality if it remains suitable, or remove downloads after you have finished with them. For a broader file-size discussion, see how to reduce an MP4 file without blurring text. That article concerns prepared stream files; it does not change the size of a YouTube app download or provide a universal per-minute figure.

Allow for playlist changes and longer videos

A calculation from today's playlist can undercount what the app stores during the month. YouTube's offline FAQ says a downloaded playlist may receive a new video automatically when you have watched a video from that playlist in the last 30 days, or downloaded the playlist in the last 30 days. That means your planned minutes should include the possibility of new additions, not only the videos visible when you first measure.

Check the playlist occasionally and notice whether it is actively updated. If the channel adds long recordings, count their likely duration in your planning, or leave enough personal reserve to absorb them. If additions are unpredictable, do not make a precise forecast look more certain than it is. Recheck available space after an update and remove videos you no longer need offline.

The app's offline feature is for viewing under its stated conditions, not for keeping a permanent copy of a playlist. For the India-selected-country flow, YouTube says the device must reconnect to Wi-Fi or mobile data within 48 hours so it can check video availability. If a video is no longer available offline, the next sync removes it. Review the current YouTube offline-download guidance before relying on a particular video or regional rule, since app behaviour and availability can change.

This distinction is useful if your purpose is to preserve a playlist for a long period. Offline downloads remain managed by YouTube and availability checks; they are not a substitute for a permanent media archive. If what you are troubleshooting is a playlist stopping during playback rather than storage running low, the separate guide to why a YouTube playlist may stop after one video addresses that playback problem.

Check the space your device can actually spare

Compare your estimate with free space, not just the phone's advertised capacity. A device may already hold photographs, downloaded music, messaging attachments and app data. Decide how much of the remaining space you are willing to allocate to YouTube downloads while keeping a margin for those ordinary uses.

YouTube says that when less than 5% of the device's storage remains, you cannot download more videos. This is a download-blocking threshold, not a recommendation to fill the phone until it reaches that point. Keep some free capacity beyond your planned allocation, and check Profile → Settings → Background & downloads for the app's available-space information. Remove completed or unwanted downloads when the available space gets tight.

If you use a supported Android phone or tablet, YouTube documents saving downloads directly to an SD card. Check the device and app support before buying a card. YouTube says existing downloads stored internally cannot simply be moved to the card: you must delete them, choose the SD card as the download location, and download them again. See the official SD-card download instructions for the current steps and supported-device details.

An SD card helps only if your device supports that location and you set it before downloading. It does not make an ineligible video downloadable, change a quality setting, or turn app-managed downloads into permanent files. If you often run an always-on YouTube channel from prepared video files rather than saving videos for offline viewing, storage planning is a different question; the guide to running a 24/7 study livestream from India covers that publishing use case.

If your actual need is to keep a channel broadcasting while your own computer is off, that is separate from YouTube app downloads: StreamNeo removes the need to leave your computer running by turning an uploaded video into a YouTube live stream. It does not change the app's offline storage limits or preserve downloaded playlist videos.

Before committing, compare the operating options on the pricing page. When the file and channel are ready, start free — 24-hour trial, no card.

FAQ

How much storage does a YouTube download take?

It depends on the video and the quality selected, and YouTube does not publish one universal GB-per-minute value. Measure a representative sample on your device, then use its observed space per minute as a planning estimate.

Can I download YouTube videos offline in India?

Many videos are available for mobile downloads in India, but availability and requirements can vary by video. Check its Download control in the app; some videos may require Premium, so do not assume that every video has the same eligibility.

Are YouTube playlist downloads permanent?

No. The India offline flow requires the device to reconnect within 48 hours so YouTube can check availability, and a video that is no longer available offline may be removed at the next sync. Treat these downloads as app-managed offline viewing, not an archive.

Can I save YouTube downloads to an SD card?

You can on supported Android phones and tablets if YouTube offers the SD-card location in your settings. Existing internal downloads have to be deleted and downloaded again after you select the card as the location.
