You add a YouTube stream key to Streamlabs Desktop by copying it from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and entering it in the encoder’s stream-key field. Before broadcasting, confirm that live streaming is enabled for your channel and check that YouTube receives the encoder feed.
You can either connect Streamlabs to YouTube as a destination, if that option is available in your current version, or enter YouTube’s server URL and the key separately. YouTube may have loaded a key from a previous stream, so check which stream is selected before changing a working setup.
Confirm live streaming is enabled
Start in YouTube Studio, using the channel that will host the broadcast. YouTube says a channel needs to be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its Help page also says the person streaming must be at least 16. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance rather than relying on old instructions or assumptions about your account.
If you have not streamed from the channel before, YouTube may take up to 24 hours to activate live streaming after you enable it. That is an activation window, not a promise that the feature will be ready immediately. If the Live Control Room indicates that activation is pending, wait for the channel’s access to become available before treating a missing preview as a Streamlabs problem.
This distinction can save time. Streamlabs can be configured correctly and still have no authorised live destination to receive its feed. First establish that the channel can access live streaming; then retrieve the key and configure the encoder.
If you manage more than one channel, verify the account and channel name at the top of Studio. Keys belong to the selected stream and channel context. A key copied while signed into another channel will not connect the broadcast you intend to run.
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room
In YouTube Studio, choose Create, then Go Live. This opens the Live Control Room, where you can manage a stream and see its connection preview. Open the Stream tab to work with the stream settings. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe this route and the values an encoder needs.
The Live Control Room is the source of the connection details. Do not look for a stream key in a public video page, a channel URL or the stream title. Those identify content or the channel; they do not replace the private encoder credential.
If you are preparing an event in advance, take a moment to confirm that you are in the intended stream rather than creating a duplicate. A scheduled event and a reusable stream can have different settings and start behaviour. The objective at this stage is to establish a connection, not to publish the broadcast.
YouTube’s help pages may be updated, and screen layouts can change. Follow the current labels visible in Studio if they differ slightly from a remembered path. The important destination is the stream settings within Live Control Room, where YouTube displays the server information and key associated with the selected stream.
Create a stream or select the one you will use
In the Stream tab, create a stream or select an existing one. Choose based on how you intend to manage the broadcast: if you have already arranged a scheduled stream, select that item; if you are setting up a reusable feed, use the stream YouTube provides for that purpose. The exact choice depends on the channel workflow, but Streamlabs must send its feed to the same stream whose settings you are reading.
YouTube can preload previous settings, including the earlier stream key. That is useful when reusing an established configuration: you may not need to replace anything. Before copying or changing values, check that the selected stream is the intended one and that its connection details are the ones you mean to use.
Avoid changing a key simply because it is not newly generated. If the current key belongs to the selected stream and the encoder is already configured with it, replacing it creates an extra update step without helping the connection. If you intentionally reset it, however, update the encoder with the replacement before trying to connect.
For a channel that runs long-form material, stream identity and content planning are separate tasks. A continuous playlist or loop may need additional preparation beyond this connection step; see the practical considerations in running a 24/7 YouTube playlist with Indian-language videos. This guide stays focused on getting the Streamlabs encoder linked to the chosen Studio stream.
Find and copy the stream key
With the correct stream selected, find the stream key in the Live Control Room’s stream settings and copy it. Keep the server URL and the key distinct in your notes or clipboard: if Streamlabs offers separate connection fields, the URL goes in the server or RTMP field, while the key goes in the field marked for the stream key.
Treat the key as private. YouTube describes stream keys as similar to a password and address for the stream. Do not paste it into a public post, screenshot, shared document or chat, and do not share it with someone who does not need access to operate the broadcast. Anyone with access to the key may be able to send a feed to that stream.
If you think the key has been exposed, use YouTube’s reset option in Live Control Room and replace the old value in the encoder. A reset invalidates the previous connection detail, so the encoder will need the new one before it can send a feed. YouTube explains the available controls in its stream settings help.
Copy the key directly from Studio rather than retyping it. Stream keys can be long, and a missing character or accidental space can make a correct-looking setup fail. If you use a clipboard manager or shared workstation, clear sensitive clipboard history according to the tools and policies you use.
Enter the key or select YouTube in Streamlabs Desktop
Open Streamlabs Desktop and locate its streaming or encoder connection settings. The current Streamlabs Desktop control names and locations are not established by the YouTube sources cited here, so do not assume a particular menu path based on an older version or another application. Look for the destination/platform choice and the fields that accept a server URL and stream key.
If Streamlabs offers YouTube as a destination and lets you connect the channel, follow that route and confirm that the selected YouTube account is the one you checked in Studio. If it instead asks for encoder details, copy YouTube’s server URL into the server or RTMP field and paste the key in Stream Key. YouTube documents both a service selection and the generic server/key workflow; the labels inside Streamlabs may vary.
Do not put the key in the server field or the server URL in the key field. They are different values. If the application has only one apparent text field, stop and inspect the current help or settings carefully rather than guessing. A wrong field can look like an authentication problem even when the key itself is current.
After entering the details, apply or save the encoder settings if the application presents that step. Keep the key private while working: avoid capturing it in a screen recording or leaving the settings window visible during a public demonstration. The key is a connection credential, not information viewers need.
For an always-on channel, an encoder setup is only one part of a reliable operating plan. Your computer, network and content have to remain available for as long as you intend to broadcast. If you are comparing an encoder running on a spare machine with a cloud-run playlist, this overview of cloud options for a 24/7 YouTube playlist covers a different operational decision; it does not change how a Studio key is entered in Streamlabs.
Test the connection before going live
Once the encoder details are saved, start the encoder feed from Streamlabs without assuming that you have also published the stream to viewers. Return to YouTube’s Live Control Room and check whether a preview arrives. For a scheduled broadcast or a stream that requires a manual start, wait for the preview and then use the appropriate Studio control when you are ready to go live.
Test with the same kind of material you plan to broadcast. A static image can show that some video is arriving, but it will not tell you whether motion behaves as expected. Speak or play representative audio and check that the preview reflects it. YouTube recommends testing before an event and watching for messages about stream health; see its live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
A successful encoder connection is not the same as a finished broadcast. Check the preview, audio and movement, then read any health messages shown in Studio. Do not click Go live simply because Streamlabs indicates that it is sending; confirm the intended stream is receiving the feed and that you are ready for viewers to see it.
For a music, prayer or study stream, check a section with representative sound rather than a silent opening frame. For a video loop, verify visible movement and continuity. If you are preparing a long-running stream, a preflight that covers the material you actually plan to run is more useful than a brief test with an unrelated clip. This guide to testing a 24/7 Indian music YouTube stream offers a broader checklist for that sort of session.
If Streamlabs does not connect
Work through the connection in order instead of repeatedly pasting values at random. Confirm that the selected Studio stream is the right one, that live streaming is enabled for the channel, and that the server URL and key occupy their intended fields. Then look at the Live Control Room preview to see whether YouTube is receiving anything.
If the encoder reports a start error, retrieve the key again from the selected stream and paste it into Streamlabs. YouTube specifically recommends refreshing the key and updating the third-party encoder as a troubleshooting step. If you recently reset the key, ensure the encoder no longer has the old value saved.
If the key appears correct but no preview arrives, recheck the destination and URL as well as the key. Confirm that the encoder is sending to YouTube, not another platform or a different stream configuration. A preview that appears but has no sound or movement points to a different issue than a feed that never arrives, so note what you can actually observe before changing settings.
Once the connection works, avoid unnecessary edits before the broadcast. If you need to adapt the video or audio later, make those changes deliberately and check the preview again. For example, resolution decisions for a loop are separate from the credential itself; this article on using different video resolutions in a YouTube loop stream discusses that content-side question.
StreamNeo is relevant when the recurring problem is keeping your own computer running a file-based 24/7 broadcast: it takes an uploaded video and keeps the YouTube stream running without leaving that computer on, so the key-entry step does not depend on an overnight desktop session. It is YouTube-only, and it does not change YouTube’s channel eligibility or make a stream exempt from review or policy requirements.

FAQ
Does YouTube create a new key every time I open Live Control Room?
Not necessarily. YouTube may load previous stream settings, including the existing key, when you select a stream. Check that you have chosen the intended stream and reuse its current key unless you have a reason to reset or replace it.
Can I share my stream key with someone helping me?
Treat it like a password and do not expose it in public or casual messages. If another person needs to operate the broadcast, consider their channel access and responsibilities carefully; reset the key if you believe it has been exposed, then update the encoder.
Should I click Go live as soon as Streamlabs connects?
No. First check that the correct stream’s Live Control Room preview receives the feed, and test audio and visible movement. If the event is scheduled or needs a manual start, use Studio’s controls only when you are ready to begin broadcasting.
What if YouTube shows no preview after I enter the key?
Check that live streaming is enabled, that the selected stream is correct, and that the server URL and stream key are in their separate fields. If Streamlabs reports a start error, copy the key again from that stream’s settings and update the encoder.
