Super Chat and Super Stickers let viewers pay to highlight a message or share an animated sticker; they support the creator and are not charitable donations. YouTube Giving is a separate option for eligible creators raising money for eligible nonprofits, with a donate button shown in live chat or on the watch page.

Choose the route by deciding who should receive the money. If you want creator support, check access to fan-funding features in YouTube Studio. If you are fundraising for a nonprofit, check YouTube Giving eligibility and attach a fundraiser to the stream. Neither route should be treated as a promise that every channel or organisation qualifies.

Creator support vs. charitable donations

The word “donation” is often used loosely when people talk about money sent during a livestream, but the distinction matters. Super Chat and Super Stickers are paid fan-funding features. Viewers pay for a message to stand out in live chat or for a sticker to appear; the payment is creator support, not a charitable gift. YouTube’s Commerce Products monetization policies explicitly say that fan-funding features are not crowdfunding or donation tools.

YouTube Giving has a different recipient and purpose: it lets eligible creators raise funds for a nonprofit through YouTube’s fundraiser tools. It is not simply another way to tip the channel owner. YouTube’s YouTube Giving FAQs explain the channel and nonprofit conditions, how the donate button appears, and how funds are handled.

A quick comparison helps prevent confusion:

Route Who the payment supports What viewers use Main checks
Super Chat The creator, through fan funding A paid highlighted live-chat message YPP, age, region, feature-specific requirements and activation
Super Stickers The creator, through fan funding A paid animated image in live chat YPP, age, region, feature-specific requirements and activation
YouTube Giving An eligible nonprofit A donate button associated with the fundraiser Channel location and status, and nonprofit eligibility

Do not tell viewers that paying for a highlighted message makes them a donor to a charity. If you want to raise money for a nonprofit, use the fundraiser route and identify the recipient clearly. If viewers are supporting you personally, describe Super Chat or Stickers as creator support and do not attach charitable or tax claims to those payments.

What Super Chat and Super Stickers do

Super Chat gives a viewer a paid message with enhanced visibility in live chat. Super Stickers offer a paid animated sticker instead of, or alongside, a written message. Both are designed for interaction between viewers and the channel during a live broadcast. They do not create a nonprofit fundraiser or a donate button.

Access is not automatic. YouTube’s minimum criteria for fan-funding features include participation in the YouTube Partner Program, being at least 18 years old, and being in a country or region where the particular feature is available. Individual features have further conditions, so being in YPP is not enough on its own. Check the current policy and the Earn or monetisation area in YouTube Studio rather than relying on a general checklist from another creator.

The usual practical path is to confirm that the channel is accepted into YPP, review and accept the relevant commerce terms shown by YouTube, then turn on the available features in Studio or the YouTube mobile app. The exact controls can change, and a feature may not be available to every account. If the option is missing, check the account’s channel status, location and feature-specific requirements before assuming there is a technical fault.

A viewer may see a purchase control in live chat when the feature is enabled, but that does not mean every viewer has the same payment methods or that every message will be highlighted in the same way. Avoid promising visibility duration, placement or a particular outcome unless the current YouTube interface states it. Explain that viewers are paying for an interaction feature and should use it only if they are comfortable with the terms shown at checkout.

For a channel that also runs recorded material continuously, operational reliability is a separate concern from monetisation. A stream that drops overnight interrupts the viewing experience and live chat; it does not change who receives a payment or whether a feature is eligible. If the broadcast is built around recorded sermons, see this guide to streaming recorded church sermons with a fixed thumbnail and title. Keep the stream setup and the payment explanation as two distinct parts of your channel plan.

How eligible creators add a YouTube Giving fundraiser

Start by checking YouTube Giving in the channel’s Studio account and confirming that the fundraiser is available for your location and channel. If it is available, create or join a fundraiser and select the nonprofit you intend to support. The official Giving FAQs describe the process and current conditions; follow the controls displayed in Studio, since availability and interface details can change.

Next, attach that fundraiser to the scheduled live stream. Do this before the broadcast if possible, so you can confirm that the fundraiser is attached to the correct event and that the title or description makes the recipient clear. Do not substitute a personal payment link or a Super Chat prompt and call it YouTube Giving. They are different mechanisms and may have different recipients, conditions and terms.

There is an important compatibility point: when a live stream has Live Chat Donations through YouTube Giving, Super Chat and Super Stickers are unavailable on that stream. You also cannot have members-only live chat alongside the donate button. This means you need to decide which interaction fits the purpose of that broadcast. For a charity fundraiser, prioritise the fundraiser and explain why the creator-support features are not present. For an ordinary creator-support stream, use the fan-funding features if available and do not imply that they raise money for a charity.

YouTube says ads are not affected by adding a fundraiser. That does not mean an ad is part of the donation, or that a fundraiser changes a channel’s general monetisation status. Keep any explanation of the charity’s work separate from claims about ads or creator revenue.

A long-running channel may have a different schedule from a one-off event, but the setup principle remains the same: test the scheduled stream’s viewing page and chat before you publicise a fundraiser. If you run a continuous stream, it is useful to know what should happen after a restart or interruption; this guide covers automatically restarting a pre-recorded YouTube live stream after a PC reboot. A restart procedure does not replace checking that the correct fundraiser remains attached to the live event.

Where viewers can donate

When YouTube Giving is attached and live chat is enabled, viewers can find the donate button in live chat. If the stream has no live chat, YouTube says the button appears beside or below the watch page video. The precise layout may vary by device and YouTube interface, so show viewers where to look without promising that the button will appear in an identical position on every screen.

Before going live, open the scheduled event as a viewer would and check that the fundraiser is present. If possible, review it on a phone as well as a desktop browser. A viewer who arrives after the stream starts should not have to infer the recipient from an old pinned message or a spoken appeal. State the nonprofit’s name in the stream description and give a short verbal cue, such as “Use the donate button in live chat to contribute to the listed fundraiser.”

For Super Chat and Super Stickers, viewers use the corresponding purchase controls in live chat when those features are enabled. Describe what they are doing plainly: they are buying a highlighted message or sticker as creator support. Do not call that control a donate button. If chat is disabled, or if the feature is not available on a viewer’s account or region, the viewer may not see the control. Direct them to YouTube’s current help information rather than promising a workaround.

For creators in India or elsewhere who primarily stream from a phone, ask a trusted person to check the public event before announcing it. A creator looking at Studio settings may see configuration that is not obvious to a viewer on the watch page. It is also sensible to rehearse the sentence you will use to explain the recipient: a clear distinction at the start is better than correcting an audience’s assumption after payments have already been made.

Eligibility and fundraiser checks

For fan-funding features, verify the channel’s YPP status, the creator’s age, regional availability and feature-specific rules. YouTube’s policies also require the relevant commerce terms to be accepted and the features to be enabled. These are checks for Super Chat and Super Stickers; they should not be mixed up with YouTube Giving’s separate eligibility rules.

YouTube Giving’s FAQ lists creator requirements including an available location, at least 10,000 subscribers, YPP participation, and a channel that is not designated as made for kids. YouTube also notes that some channels may see fundraising outside the listed criteria, so the only useful practical check is the channel’s own Studio account. Do not promise access because a channel seems similar to one that already has the feature.

The nonprofit has to qualify too. According to YouTube’s Giving FAQ, it must be a US-registered 501(c)(3) public charity, opted into online fundraising through GuideStar, and compliant with YouTube’s monetisation policies; private foundations are not supported. The FAQ says a creator request for an eligible nonprofit may take up to five business days. Check the live official page before planning a campaign, because country availability and programme details can change.

YouTube says 100% of a contribution goes to the nonprofit and YouTube pays transaction fees. The FAQ also explains that Google works with Network for Good to collect and distribute funds. It says distribution is typically monthly, while amounts under $10 are distributed annually. Treat these as statements from YouTube’s current help information, not as a promise about the timing of a particular fundraiser or a statement about tax treatment. Do not tell viewers that a contribution qualifies for a tax deduction without directing them to the nonprofit and the relevant official guidance.

Before announcing a charity stream, confirm the exact nonprofit name shown in the fundraiser, the event it is attached to, whether live chat is enabled, and what viewers will see on the watch page. If the organisation does not appear, pause the announcement and check the eligibility route with YouTube and the organisation. A different charity with a similar name is not an acceptable substitute. For broader channel planning, it can also help to understand the age requirement for YouTube live streaming, while remembering that live-streaming eligibility and fan-funding eligibility are not identical checks.

Set expectations and thank supporters

Explain the recipient before the first appeal. On a creator-support stream, say that Super Chat and Super Stickers are optional paid features that help support the channel and make a message or sticker stand out. On a YouTube Giving stream, name the nonprofit and direct viewers to the donate button. If the stream has both a charity context and creator monetisation elsewhere on the channel, distinguish which payment path applies to this particular event.

Keep the appeal proportionate. Viewers may be watching a devotional, study, ambience or local-news stream while doing something else, and some will have chat open while others will not. A short explanation in the description, an occasional spoken reminder and a clear pinned message, where appropriate, give people enough context without interrupting the programme repeatedly. Avoid suggesting that anyone must pay to belong or that a particular payment will produce a personal outcome.

Thank people without exposing their private circumstances. A brief acknowledgement of a visible Super Chat or Sticker is reasonable, but do not pressure other viewers to match it. For a fundraiser, you can thank the audience collectively and refer to the listed nonprofit. Do not reveal a donor’s identity beyond what YouTube already displays, and do not make promises about how quickly an individual contribution reaches the organisation.

Prepare for the questions viewers are likely to ask: “Who receives this?”, “Where is the donate button?” and “Can I use this if I do not have chat open?” Answer from the current on-screen setup. If the button is not visible, do not improvise a claim that the donation has gone through; tell the viewer to check the official help page or the nonprofit’s information. For a 24/7 channel, consider adding a concise explanation to the channel description or stream overlay, then review it whenever the attached fundraiser changes.

A stable broadcast helps viewers follow the event, but equipment and automation do not decide payment eligibility. If your main concern is keeping an overnight loop online, this guide on whether a 24/7 stream needs a PC left on covers the separate operating question. StreamNeo can remove the need to leave your own computer running for a pre-recorded 24/7 YouTube broadcast; it does not change YouTube’s rules for creator support or charitable fundraising.

FAQ

How do I collect donations during a YouTube live stream?

First decide whether viewers are supporting you or giving to a nonprofit. Use Super Chat or Super Stickers for creator support if the features are available to your channel; use YouTube Giving for an eligible nonprofit fundraiser. Check the current requirements in YouTube Studio and YouTube Help before announcing either route.

Can I receive Super Chats without monetisation?

Super Chat has eligibility requirements, including YouTube Partner Program participation, age and regional availability, as well as feature-specific conditions. Check the Earn area in Studio for your channel rather than assuming that a live chat alone enables it. If it is unavailable, do not describe another payment method as a Super Chat.

How do I add a donate button to YouTube Live?

Check that YouTube Giving is available to your channel and that the nonprofit qualifies, then create or join its fundraiser and attach it to the scheduled stream. With live chat enabled, the button appears in live chat; without chat, YouTube says it appears beside or below the video. Verify the viewer-facing page before promoting the event.

Can I use Super Chat and YouTube Giving at the same time?

Not on a stream with Live Chat Donations: YouTube says Super Chat and Super Stickers are unavailable there. You also cannot use members-only live chat with the donate button. Choose the setup that matches the stream’s purpose and tell viewers clearly who receives each kind of payment.
