To create a YouTube playlist, open a video or Short and use More → Save → Create new playlist, then give it a name and choose who can see it. On a computer, you can also create and fill a playlist in YouTube Studio before publishing it.

The watch-page route is quickest when you already have a first video in mind; Studio suits channel owners who want to set up a title, description, visibility and order in one pass. You can add more videos and change the order later, but visibility affects how people can find or share the list.

Create a playlist from a video or Short

The watch-page method starts with the item you want in the playlist. YouTube’s controls are not always laid out identically across devices, so follow the labels shown in your app or browser rather than expecting every screen to look the same.

On a computer

  1. Open the video or Short you want to include.
  2. Select More (the three-dot menu), then Save.
  3. Choose Create new playlist.
  4. Enter a name, choose its visibility and select Create.

The new playlist includes the video or Short you started from. You can then continue watching and save other items to the same list. YouTube’s computer instructions for creating and managing playlists document this watch-page path.

In the YouTube app

For a regular video, open its watch page and tap More → Save. Depending on what you last used, the app may save the video to a recent playlist or Watch Later instead of immediately opening the new-playlist form. If a confirmation message appears, tap Change, then choose New playlist, enter a name, set visibility and tap Create.

For a Short, use More → Save to playlist → New playlist, enter the name and visibility, then tap Done. The wording and placement can differ by app version or device. If you do not see the exact path, open the item’s menu and look for the save-to-playlist action. You can also start from the You tab and select videos from your watch history, as described in YouTube’s Android playlist guide.

Choose this method when you want to capture a video as you find it. It is also useful for a small list you are building while researching a subject, collecting devotional songs or putting together lesson references. If you are preparing a larger channel collection, Studio provides more fields and a way to add items before creating the list.

Name it and choose visibility

A playlist name should tell you what belongs in the list without making you remember why you created it. “Monday bhajans for morning practice” is more useful than “New playlist” if you plan to keep several lists. A clear title helps you recognise the right list while saving another video, and tells a viewer what they will find if you share it.

Visibility is a separate choice from the title. YouTube’s three playlist settings control who can view the list and where it may be surfaced:

Setting Who can view it Practical use
Public Anyone Use when you want the playlist available on your channel and potentially discoverable in YouTube surfaces such as search and recommendations.
Unlisted Anyone with the link Use when you want to share the list by link without having it appear in search or recommendations.
Private You, the owner Use for personal organisation or a working list that you are not ready to share. The playlist URL cannot be shared with viewers.

These are visibility behaviours, not guarantees about where or how often YouTube will show a public playlist. Public means it can be discoverable; it does not ensure that people will find it. Unlisted is not a way to restrict a link to named people: anyone who has the link can view it. YouTube explains the privacy settings and their effects.

A practical choice is to make a personal queue private, share a draft with a small group by unlisted link, and use public for a collection that is meant to be part of your channel. You can revise visibility later if your purpose changes. If you manage a supervised account, or do not see the privacy choices, settings may be unavailable for that account; check YouTube’s current guidance rather than assuming the app is broken.

Create a playlist in YouTube Studio

Studio’s desktop route is useful when you want to write the description and decide the order before the playlist is ready for viewers. Sign in to YouTube Studio, select Create → New playlist, and enter a title. Add a description if it will help explain the collection, choose visibility and select an ordering option. Then select Add videos, find the videos you want, and finish with Create.

YouTube Studio supports adding videos by searching, pasting a URL or choosing from your library. That makes the workflow handy if you already have a set of links or know which uploads belong together. YouTube lists a maximum of 150 characters for a playlist title and 5,000 characters for a description in its Studio playlist instructions. Those are platform limits, not a recommended target: a concise title and a description that answers a viewer’s likely question are usually easier to scan.

Unlike the watch-page method, Studio lets you assemble the collection without first saving one particular video. That can be preferable when preparing a channel section, a set of recorded lessons, or a sequence of local news clips. If Studio’s available ordering controls do not match what you want, create the playlist and adjust its order afterwards from the playlist management view.

Add more videos later

You do not have to settle the full contents when you create a playlist. On desktop, open a video or Short, select More → Save, then select an existing playlist. In the app, use the corresponding save-to-playlist control and confirm the target list. Check the confirmation message if YouTube indicates it has chosen a recent list; switch it if that is not where the item belongs.

You can manage playlists in Studio under Content → Playlists. Open the relevant playlist to add videos through search, a URL or your library. This is a more deliberate route when you are checking a batch of uploads, while the watch-page save action is convenient for one item at a time.

A small bit of housekeeping prevents confusion later: check the playlist name before saving, especially if you have several similar collections. For a recurring devotional stream or a study channel, separate lists by purpose rather than keeping unrelated videos in one long queue. If you are planning a continuous broadcast rather than simply grouping videos for viewers to watch, a playlist is not itself a 24/7 live stream. The distinction matters for channel owners; this guide to creating a rotating playlist for a 24/7 YouTube mantra stream covers the separate broadcast workflow.

There are a couple of cases where adding may not work as expected. YouTube says a Made for Kids video or channel cannot be added to a playlist from a homepage; you can still add it from search results. If an item is missing or a save action is unavailable, try opening the video page or finding it in search, and check the item’s account or audience restrictions.

Arrange playlist order

Order changes the experience of watching a collection in sequence. A lesson playlist might put introductions before advanced material; a music collection might open with a familiar track; a news loop could place a summary before individual reports. Think about the first item as well as the transition from one video to the next, rather than treating the order as a purely administrative detail.

In YouTube Studio, open Content → Playlists, select the playlist and arrange its videos by dragging them into the desired order where that control is available. You can also choose an ordering option while creating a playlist in Studio. If you are using a phone, controls may be in a different place from desktop, so look for the playlist’s edit or reorder action rather than assuming the desktop layout applies.

There is an important exception: YouTube does not allow reordering for playlists that contain only Shorts. If you need a manually arranged sequence, a Shorts-only list may not give you that control. For ordinary video playlists, check the finished order from the playlist page and adjust it there if the list is meant to be watched from beginning to end.

Before sharing, consider whether viewers should encounter the newest item first, start with a short introduction, or follow a fixed sequence. If the list is for your own reference, the default order may be enough. If you have a series of repeated episodes in a broadcast workflow, ordering in a YouTube playlist is a different problem from managing the playback source; see this guide to fixing repeated episodes in an FFmpeg YouTube podcast playlist for that distinct case.

Edit playlist details and visibility

After creation, you can revisit a playlist to correct its title or description, change visibility, add or remove items and adjust the order if that playlist type allows it. On desktop, use the playlist’s edit controls or manage it from Studio. In the app, open the playlist and look for its edit action. The exact placement can differ, and some controls may be available in one interface but not another.

Use the description to clarify scope, not to repeat the title in longer form. For example, a list called “Class 8 science revision” could say whether it contains short topic reviews or full recorded lessons. If the collection is public, that context helps a viewer decide whether it is relevant before pressing play. If it is unlisted, a clear description still helps the people with whom you share the link.

If your reason for sharing changes, update visibility deliberately. Changing an unlisted list to public makes it eligible to appear in YouTube discovery surfaces; changing it to private removes viewer access. Recheck any links you have already sent if you change the setting, and do not treat unlisted as confidential storage. For a channel owner using playlists alongside a live channel, there are separate operational considerations, such as keeping the computer off during a continuous broadcast; see how recorded lessons can stream continuously without leaving a computer on.

For channel organisation, decide whether the playlist belongs on the public-facing channel or is just an internal working collection. You can keep planning lists private and publish only the lists that are ready for viewers. No playlist setting guarantees more views, and a list should not be made public solely on the assumption that it will increase reach. Make the choice based on who needs access and how you intend to share it.

If you are preparing a separate always-on broadcast from recorded material, a playlist is only the viewer-facing way to group videos; it does not run the live stream. StreamNeo can remove the need to leave your computer running for that separate broadcast task, while you continue to manage YouTube playlists for viewers in YouTube itself.

For the playlist itself, the practical finish is to confirm its name, visibility, contents and opening item in the interface your audience will use.

FAQ

How do I make a playlist on YouTube?

Open a video or Short, select More → Save → Create new playlist, then enter a name, choose visibility and create it. In the app, the labels may say tap rather than select, and a confirmation may let you change a save that went to the last-used list.

How do I create a YouTube playlist on my phone?

Open the video’s watch page in the YouTube app and use its save-to-playlist control. For a Short, choose More → Save to playlist → New playlist; enter a name and visibility, then tap Done. App controls can differ, so check the current menu on your device.

Can I make a YouTube playlist private?

Yes. Choose Private when creating it, or edit the playlist’s visibility later. Private playlists are viewable by the owner, and their URLs cannot be shared with viewers.

How do I add and reorder videos?

Open a video and save it to an existing playlist, or manage the list under Content → Playlists in Studio. Ordinary video playlists can be arranged by dragging items; playlists containing only Shorts cannot be reordered.
