To enable live streaming on YouTube Studio, open Studio on a computer, go to Settings > Channel > Features, and complete phone verification. YouTube may then take up to 24 hours to make first-time live streaming available, so a verified channel does not always show the Go Live option immediately.

You also need to use the correct channel, have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and meet YouTube’s age requirements. The guide below takes you through the settings path and gives you a short diagnostic route if Go Live is missing.

Select the channel you want to enable

Start by checking which YouTube channel is active before changing any settings. This matters if your Google account controls more than one channel, or if you work with a Brand Account. Phone verification applies to the selected channel, not automatically to every channel connected to your Google account.

Open YouTube in a desktop browser and select your profile picture. Use the account or channel switcher to choose the channel that will host the live stream. Then open YouTube Studio from that same channel. You should see the intended channel name or profile image in Studio before continuing.

This is particularly important for a devotional channel, local news loop, or small business channel managed by several people. A team member can be signed into the right Google account but still be working inside the wrong channel. If the channel name, handle, or profile image looks unfamiliar, stop and switch channels before verifying anything.

There is also an ownership distinction. For a channel that is not a Brand Account, YouTube limits phone verification to the channel owner. Brand Account owners and managers can verify a Brand Account channel. If you are a manager without the required ownership role, ask the owner to complete this step rather than trying to work around it.

If your plan is an always-on stream, enabling Live is only the first part of the work. You will still need a reliable source for the video, suitable audio, and a way to keep the broadcast running after your own computer is switched off. For background on the longer-running side of this setup, see how to keep a YouTube live stream running after the first video ends.

Open YouTube Studio settings

With the correct channel selected, open YouTube Studio and look at the left-hand menu. Choose Settings. In the settings window, choose Channel.

YouTube’s labels can change slightly as Studio is updated, but the route you are looking for is the channel settings area rather than general Google Account settings. Do not look for phone verification under your personal mobile number, Gmail settings, or the YouTube viewing app. The relevant control belongs to the YouTube channel.

On the Channel page, look for tabs or sections relating to basic information, advanced settings, or feature eligibility. Choose Features or Feature eligibility, depending on the wording displayed in your Studio account. You should see which channel features are available and which require an additional step.

If Studio opens in a narrow browser window, some labels may be hidden or placed behind a menu. Maximising the browser and using a computer rather than the YouTube mobile app makes the path easier to follow. The live-stream controls themselves can be used in several ways, but the first enablement and verification route is clearest in Studio on a computer.

Keep this settings page open while you complete the next step. If verification is successful, you can return to the same area and confirm that the feature status has changed. A successful phone-code submission is useful evidence, but it is not the same thing as immediate access to every live method.

Find channel feature eligibility

Inside Channel > Features, find the area labelled Features that require phone verification. Choose Verify phone number. YouTube will ask how you want to receive a verification code, usually by text message or automated voice call.

Enter a number that you can access now and choose the delivery method. Type the code into YouTube when it arrives. If the message is delayed, check that the country prefix and number are correct, then try the voice-call option if it is offered. Avoid repeatedly submitting different numbers while you are unsure which channel is selected.

YouTube states that one phone number may be linked to no more than two channels per year for verification. That limit is relevant if you manage several devotional, music, or local-information channels. It is not a reason to purchase a new number without first checking which channels have already used the existing one.

After the code is accepted, return to the feature-eligibility page. Look for the status of the features that phone verification unlocks, including live streaming. If the page still appears unchanged, refresh Studio and confirm the channel name again. A browser session can retain an older page state after verification.

Phone verification proves access to the number and can unlock the relevant feature, but it does not remove policy restrictions or override an account decision. It also does not mean that mobile, webcam, encoder, and console workflows will all have identical requirements. Those methods have different equipment and, for mobile, additional channel conditions.

Verify the channel by phone

The verification flow is short, but ownership and account access deserve care. Use the channel owner’s access where the channel is not a Brand Account. For a Brand Account, an owner or manager can complete verification according to YouTube’s current channel permissions.

If a colleague normally uploads videos but cannot see the verification control, that may be a permissions issue rather than a technical fault. Ask the channel owner to open the feature-eligibility page and complete the code step. Do not share a Google password to solve a role problem. Use the channel’s established permissions and confirm who should control the live broadcast.

If the code does not arrive, check the number, country selection, mobile signal, and whether the number has already been used for the annual channel limit. A voice call can be useful when text messages are delayed. If YouTube reports that the number cannot be used, wait before making repeated attempts and review the official YouTube account verification guidance for the current explanation.

Once verification is accepted, write down the channel name and the approximate time of the change. This is not a promise about activation timing, but it gives you a useful reference if you need to diagnose a missing Go Live control later. Keep the confirmation page or message available until the first broadcast has started successfully.

Check live-streaming eligibility

YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. It also says that the person starting a live stream must be at least 16 years old. These conditions sit alongside phone verification rather than being replaced by it.

A restriction may be connected to policy or copyright issues. Check the channel’s notices and YouTube Studio dashboard if you have previously received a warning, takedown, or live-streaming limitation. Do not create or use another channel to bypass an active live restriction. YouTube says that attempting to bypass a restriction in this way can create further enforcement problems.

The age rule matters when a family member or young creator appears in the content. A person under 16 should not operate the stream alone. YouTube’s guidance describes an adult-owned account arrangement where the adult is visibly present and actively co-creates, so check the current official rules before planning a broadcast involving a minor.

Mobile streaming has extra conditions that do not apply in the same way to computer webcam or encoder streaming. YouTube currently lists at least 50 subscribers, channel verification, no live restriction in the preceding 90 days, live streaming enabled, and a supported device version for mobile live streaming. The mobile guidance lists Android 8.0 or later and iOS 8 or later.

Do not treat the mobile subscriber threshold as a requirement for every form of YouTube Live. If you are using a computer webcam or an encoder, choose that method in Live Control Room and follow its requirements instead. You can review YouTube’s current overview in Get started with live streaming before deciding which route fits your channel.

Choose a streaming method

Once the feature is enabled, choose the method that matches the work you actually need to do. YouTube provides mobile, webcam, encoder, and console routes. Enabling live streaming does not require you to buy a camera, microphone, or encoder first.

Method Suits What you need to consider
Webcam A direct talk, lesson, prayer, or update from a computer A computer, webcam, microphone, title, privacy setting, and a stable connection
Encoder Overlays, external microphones, cameras, playlists, or a produced programme Encoder software or hardware, a configured stream key, and more testing before going live
Mobile A phone-based update or event YouTube’s additional subscriber, device, and channel conditions
Console A supported game console broadcast The console’s own streaming setup and instructions

For a simple first test, Webcam is often the least complicated computer route. In Live Control Room, enter the title and description, choose the privacy setting, select the webcam and microphone, preview the feed, and start the broadcast when the preview is correct. YouTube’s current help says webcam streaming is compatible with Chrome 60 or later and Firefox 53 or later, but browser support can change.

An encoder is more appropriate when your channel needs a logo, several scenes, a separate audio mixer, or a pre-recorded programme with overlays. It is not a condition for enabling Live. A hardware encoder can make sense for a concert, conference, or multi-camera production, while a basic webcam may be enough for a single presenter.

For an always-on music or ambience channel, the production question is usually different from the activation question. You may have a finished video but not want a home computer running through the night. A service such as StreamNeo removes that particular need by letting you upload the file once, connect the YouTube channel, and keep the broadcast running while your own computer is off.

Before building a larger workflow, decide whether you need a single uploaded programme, a repeating playlist, or regular content changes. A schedule for songs in a 24/7 YouTube radio stream may require a different operating plan from a one-off webcam broadcast. The live feature can be enabled in both cases, but the preparation and monitoring duties are not the same.

Wait for first-time access and troubleshoot Go Live

After you verify the channel, first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours according to YouTube. That is a possible waiting period, not a guaranteed activation time or a promise that access will appear at a particular hour. Avoid changing several settings at once while waiting, because that makes the cause of a later problem harder to identify.

If Create > Go Live is missing, use this order:

  1. Confirm the channel. Open the profile switcher and check that Studio is showing the channel you verified.
  2. Check the feature status. Return to Settings > Channel > Features and confirm that phone verification was accepted.
  3. Allow the first-time activation window. If verification was recent, wait for YouTube’s stated possible processing period before treating the absence as a fault.
  4. Check restrictions. Look for live-streaming, policy, or copyright notices and confirm there has been no live restriction in the preceding 90 days.
  5. Check the person’s role. Make sure the person trying to start the stream has the required access to that channel and is not working in a different Brand Account.
  6. Check the method. If you are trying to stream from a phone, review the mobile subscriber and device requirements. Try the computer webcam route if that is more suitable and available.
  7. Refresh the session. Sign out and back in, use a current desktop browser, and open Studio directly rather than relying on an old bookmark.

If Go Live appears but the page will not open, note the exact message rather than repeatedly clicking the control. Check YouTube’s official live-streaming troubleshooting and eligibility guidance, then compare the message with your channel status. A missing button caused by a restriction needs a different response from a page that is simply carrying an old browser session.

Do not use another channel to work around a live restriction. If the notice is unclear, follow the appeal or support route shown by YouTube. Keep screenshots of the message, the channel name, and the date you saw it, but remove private phone numbers or account details before sharing them with anyone.

Test the first broadcast before relying on it

Once Go Live is available, make a short private or unlisted test before scheduling an overnight stream. Confirm that the video is visible, the audio is present, and the correct channel page is receiving the broadcast. Watch from another device or browser so you test what a viewer sees rather than only what the control room reports.

YouTube recommends checking that your upload bandwidth can support the selected stream bitrate and leaving room for network variation. Its streaming tips recommend 20% headroom. In practical terms, do not set a stream bitrate that consumes all of the connection’s available upload capacity, especially if other people or devices share the connection.

Preview the feed in Live Control Room before starting. Listen for low volume, distortion, hum, or audio that is out of sync with the picture. For a bhajan or lofi channel, a quiet audio fault can be more damaging than an obvious video fault because viewers may leave before anyone notices it.

If you use an encoder for a scheduled event, YouTube recommends preparing at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event. These are preparation recommendations, not conditions for enabling the feature. They give you time to correct a wrong stream key, missing source, silent microphone, or unstable connection.

For a long-running stream, write down a small operating checklist: which channel is selected, where the stream key is stored, how audio is checked, who receives an alert, and what happens if the broadcast stops. The Live Control Room guide for an always-on Indian music stream can help you think through the control-room side after activation.

If your source is a pre-recorded file, also check that you have the necessary rights to use its music, images, and spoken material. Enabling YouTube Live does not grant permission to rebroadcast content. For an India-focused music station, review the practical issues in YouTube copyright rules for Indian radio stations livestreaming music before making the stream public.

Before committing, compare the operating options on the pricing page. When the file and channel are ready, start free — 24-hour trial, no card.

FAQ

Does phone verification enable YouTube Live immediately?

No. Phone verification is a required part of enabling the feature, but YouTube says first-time live-stream access may take up to 24 hours. You must also meet the current eligibility requirements and have no relevant live-streaming restriction.

Can a channel manager verify a non-Brand channel?

YouTube limits phone verification of a non-Brand channel to the channel owner. Brand Account owners and managers can verify a Brand Account channel, so check the channel type and your role before troubleshooting the missing control.

Do I need 50 subscribers to stream from a computer?

The 50-subscriber threshold is listed for mobile live streaming. It should not be applied automatically to webcam or encoder streaming from a computer, although those methods still have their own setup and eligibility requirements.

Why is Go Live still missing after verification?

First confirm that you are in the same channel that was verified, then check Feature eligibility, restrictions, account role, and the possible first-time activation wait. If the control remains unavailable, use YouTube’s current help and the exact message shown in Studio to identify whether the issue is processing, permissions, policy, or the chosen streaming method.
