If your Indian VPS runs Ubuntu, you can install FFmpeg through Ubuntu’s package manager, verify the build locally, and use it to send a prerecorded video to YouTube Live. The basic loop needs both a repeated input and real-time pacing, otherwise a short file can finish quickly or the VPS can read it faster than a live broadcast should.

You also need the Stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. This guide uses one Ubuntu workflow, but package versions, CPU architecture, input codecs and network performance vary, so treat the command as a starting point and confirm the actual output on your server.

Confirm the VPS operating system

Connect to the VPS over SSH using the account and address supplied by your hosting provider. On a Linux or macOS terminal, the shape of the command is:

ssh username@your-server-address

On Windows, you can use a compatible SSH client or Windows Terminal. Do not paste your stream key into the SSH command, a chat message or a public support ticket.

First confirm that the machine is running Ubuntu and identify its release:

cat /etc/os-release
uname -m

Look for the Ubuntu release information in /etc/os-release. uname -m reports the architecture, such as an x86-64 or ARM64 environment. This matters because Ubuntu’s archive can provide different package builds for different releases and architectures.

The commands below assume a supported Ubuntu VPS with apt, sudo access and a user who can install packages. Ubuntu’s FFmpeg package archive is the right place to check whether the package is available for your release. The archive includes package information for Ubuntu releases such as 22.04 LTS and 24.04 LTS, but the version shown there is not a universal version for every server.

If the output shows Debian, another Linux distribution, or a restricted hosting image without sudo, stop before using the Ubuntu commands. The package name and installation method may differ. A VPS located in India does not by itself identify the operating system or guarantee a particular route to YouTube’s ingest service.

Before continuing, also check the basic resources available to the process:

nproc
free -h
df -h

These commands do not prove that the server can encode your file continuously. They simply show the number of visible CPU threads, available memory and remaining storage. Keep enough free storage for the source video and any temporary files you plan to create.

Refresh packages and install FFmpeg

Refresh the package list first, then install the distribution build of FFmpeg:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install ffmpeg

Read the package prompt before confirming. Ubuntu’s package manager resolves the dependencies for the release installed on your VPS. This is generally preferable to downloading an unrelated binary or copying an executable from another machine, because the package is selected for the operating system and architecture.

If sudo apt update reports repository or DNS errors, fix those before troubleshooting FFmpeg. Check that the VPS can resolve ordinary domains and that its package sources match the Ubuntu release shown earlier. If sudo is unavailable, ask the VPS administrator for a user with package-installation rights rather than running an installation command from an unknown script.

Do not assume that a command copied from a guide will produce the same FFmpeg version on every VPS. Ubuntu changes package versions between releases, and the available codec support can also depend on the distribution build. The Ubuntu package page for Noble is useful for checking that release, but your installed binary remains the important local reference.

Once installation completes, check that the shell can find the program:

command -v ffmpeg

A path such as /usr/bin/ffmpeg indicates that the executable is on the current user’s PATH. If the command returns nothing, the installation did not complete or the package executable is not available to that account.

Verify the installed FFmpeg build

Run the version check before preparing the live command:

ffmpeg -version

The first line gives the installed version. The following lines show the build configuration and library versions. You can also inspect the encoders relevant to this workflow:

ffmpeg -encoders | grep -E 'libx264|aac'

If libx264 is listed, the example H.264 command later in this article has the encoder it expects. If it is absent, do not silently substitute a codec and assume YouTube will receive the same output. Inspect the available encoders and adjust the command deliberately.

FFmpeg’s official documentation explains how inputs, outputs, stream selection and codecs are handled. The command-line syntax is flexible, but flexibility also means that a file can contain unexpected video, audio or subtitle streams. Verify the installed build instead of relying on a version number from a different Ubuntu image.

You can inspect the source file before streaming it:

ffprobe -hide_banner "/path/to/video.mp4"

The output shows the streams, dimensions, frame rate, duration and codecs that FFmpeg detects. A file with no audio may still produce a video stream, but the later command requests AAC audio output and may need adjustment if there is no audio input. A file with several audio or video streams may need explicit mapping.

Prepare a video for looping

Upload the video to a private directory on the VPS. You can use your preferred secure file-transfer method, then confirm the path:

ls -lh "/path/to/video.mp4"

Use a full path where possible. It avoids errors caused by starting FFmpeg from a different working directory, especially when you later run the process inside tmux or another session manager.

The simplest repeated input uses two options:

-re -stream_loop -1 -i "/path/to/video.mp4"

-stream_loop -1 asks FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. -re reads the file at a rate intended to resemble normal playback rather than consuming the file as quickly as the VPS can read it. For a prerecorded loop, both options are important. A loop without real-time pacing can behave like a rapid file read, while real-time pacing without repetition stops when the file ends.

This does not repair a problematic source file. If the file has a damaged index, an unusual frame rate, variable audio behaviour or unsupported streams, test it locally or transcode a clean copy first. Re-encoding before the live run can make the output more predictable, but it creates another file and uses CPU and storage.

For many channels, a source with a consistent resolution, frame rate and audio layout is easier to operate than a collection of mixed clips. If you are building a longer playlist from prerecorded material, the guide on creating an always-on YouTube channel with prerecorded videos covers the content side of that decision. It does not remove the need to test the actual FFmpeg process on your VPS.

Find the YouTube ingest URL and stream key

Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room. Create or select the live event, then open the encoder settings. YouTube provides the destination Stream URL and a stream key for the encoder.

YouTube says that the ordinary RTMP destination may be shown by default. Its help guidance explains that you can open the lock control to reveal the RTMPS URL. YouTube recommends streaming with RTMPS, the TLS-protected extension of RTMP.

Copy the Stream URL and stream key into a private notes application or directly into the command only when you are ready to run it. A stream key is a credential. Do not place it in a public Git repository, a screenshot, a tutorial, shell history that other users can read, or a support message.

If the key has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before testing again. When a connection or SSL error appears, check the destination carefully. YouTube’s encoder settings and live-streaming guidance covers the current connection details and recommends checking the RTMPS destination and, where its guidance applies, trying port 443.

Keep the Stream URL and key separate while troubleshooting. The URL is the destination; the key authenticates your channel or event. A correct FFmpeg installation cannot compensate for a copied key belonging to another event or a destination with a missing character.

Run the loop with a YouTube-compatible output

After replacing the local file path and the destination values, a starting command is:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/path/to/video.mp4" \
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k \
  -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -r 30 \
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 \
  -f flv "RTMPS_STREAM_URL/STREAM_KEY"

The example requests H.264 video, AAC audio, 30 frames per second and a two-second keyframe interval through -g 60. It also requests a 4,500 kilobit-per-second video rate and 128 kilobit-per-second audio rate. These are command settings, not a promise that the VPS can sustain them or that they are the right settings for every source.

YouTube currently lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for ingestion, along with AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate encoding, frame rates up to 60 frames per second and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. For H.264 at 720p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as a recommended bitrate. Check the current YouTube live encoder recommendations before choosing a different resolution or frame rate.

The command’s output rate must fit the VPS’s sustained outbound connection, not merely a short speed-test result. If the source is modest in resolution, sending a larger bitrate does not automatically improve it. If the CPU is small, the libx264 encode may use more processing than the VPS can maintain. You can lower the requested output quality or choose a server with more suitable resources, but test the resulting stream rather than guessing.

The -f flv output format is commonly used for RTMP and RTMPS publishing. The final quoted value combines the Stream URL and stream key in the form supplied by YouTube. Keep the entire destination on one line in the actual shell command. A misplaced quote, line break or extra space can create a connection error that looks like a codec problem.

For an audio-only source or a file without an audio stream, this exact command may fail because it requests an AAC audio output from an input that has no audio. Check ffprobe first. Likewise, if the file contains multiple streams, use explicit -map options only after you understand which video and audio streams should be sent.

Check the process and the public broadcast

When FFmpeg starts successfully, the terminal should show input details, output details and ongoing frame, time, bitrate and speed information. A process that remains open is not enough evidence that viewers can watch the broadcast.

Watch for repeated connection errors, an input that reaches the end, speed falling below real time, or a steadily increasing backlog. A speed close to real time is a useful local sign, but it does not replace YouTube’s status information. The VPS may be encoding normally while its outbound path is congested or YouTube is rejecting the destination.

In Live Control Room, monitor the preview, stream health messages and any warnings. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, then watching the health indicators during the event. A static devotional image, a music loop and a news-style video can stress the input and output differently, so test the material you will actually use.

For a first test, use a separate event or an appropriate privacy setting, keep the run short enough to inspect, and confirm that the public-facing result matches the preview. Check that audio is present, the image is not black, the loop returns to its beginning as expected and the stream does not drift out of sync.

If you want the process to survive a dropped SSH connection, run it inside a session manager such as tmux, if your VPS image provides one:

tmux new -s youtube-loop

Start FFmpeg inside that session. Detach with the appropriate tmux key sequence and reconnect later with:

tmux attach -t youtube-loop

This only protects the terminal session from an SSH disconnect. It does not restart FFmpeg after every failure, repair a broken input or guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. For process recovery, first understand the failure mode and then use a carefully tested service or supervisor. The article on reconnecting FFmpeg automatically after a YouTube stream disconnects discusses that separate problem.

Make the VPS choice part of the test

An Indian VPS can be convenient for administration and latency to your own viewers, but the location alone does not establish that its route to YouTube ingestion is suitable. Compare sustained outbound bandwidth, the route to the selected YouTube ingest endpoint, CPU capacity for the chosen encode, storage for the source file, the supported Ubuntu release and the provider’s terms for continuous streaming.

Do not compare only the advertised port speed. A loop stream needs a connection that can maintain the chosen bitrate for the whole run. It also needs enough CPU headroom to encode each frame in time. If the process repeatedly falls behind, lowering the encoding workload may help, but that is a test result rather than a guarantee.

You can watch the local process and YouTube health separately. This distinction helps isolate problems:

Symptom First place to check Likely area to investigate
ffmpeg: command not found The SSH session Installation, PATH, or package access
Input opens, then stops FFmpeg log and source file File path, damaged input, or an unsupported stream
Video plays locally but is black on YouTube YouTube preview and output mapping Codec, pixel format, mapping, or destination settings
FFmpeg runs slowly Process speed and CPU usage Encoder preset, resolution, frame rate, or VPS capacity
YouTube reports connection trouble Stream URL, key and network RTMPS destination, port guidance, credentials, or route
Viewers buffer while FFmpeg looks normal YouTube health and outbound traffic Sustained bandwidth, bitrate choice, or delivery conditions

For broader viewer-side diagnosis, see why a 24/7 stream can buffer for viewers but not for you. It is possible for the operator’s terminal to look healthy while the delivered stream has a different problem.

If maintaining packages, securing SSH, watching logs and recovering processes is more work than you want for one channel, an upload-based workflow can remove the VPS maintenance step. StreamNeo is designed for the narrower task of uploading a video once, adding the YouTube stream key and letting the broadcast run with the computer switched off, with automatic monitoring and restart when the stream drops. It is YouTube-only, so it is not a replacement if you need another platform or direct control of an Ubuntu server.

FAQ

Can I install FFmpeg on any Indian VPS?

You can install it on an Ubuntu VPS when your account has package-installation rights and the package repositories are reachable. The commands in this guide are not universal for every operating system, and the available build depends on the Ubuntu release and architecture.

How do I loop an MP4 on YouTube Live?

Use -stream_loop -1 to repeat the input and -re to read it at a real-time pace, then send the encoded output to YouTube’s Stream URL and key. Test the file’s audio and video streams first because the example command may need mapping or audio changes.

Where do I find the YouTube RTMPS URL and stream key?

Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and the encoder settings for the event. YouTube may show RTMP by default; use the lock control to reveal the RTMPS destination, then copy the stream key privately.

Does FFmpeg staying open prove that the stream is live?

No. Check FFmpeg’s input, output and speed messages as well as YouTube’s preview, stream health and warnings. A running process can still be sending the wrong stream, falling behind, using an unsuitable key or failing to deliver a watchable broadcast.
