To join the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), meet an audience eligibility route, satisfy YouTube’s account and channel requirements, then apply through the Earn area in YouTube Studio. Accept the base terms and link an active AdSense for YouTube account; reaching a threshold lets you apply, but does not guarantee acceptance.
The distinction between earlier access to some earning features and eligibility for ad revenue matters. The figures below are the requirements checked on 3 October 2026, not permanent rules; check Studio for the current requirements and availability where your channel is based.
Check whether YPP is available to your channel
YPP is not available in every country or region, and availability can differ between the programme and individual features. Start by signing in to the Google Account that owns your channel and opening YouTube Studio’s Earn area. The options and notices shown there are more useful than an old country list, particularly if you are applying from India or managing a channel whose location is set elsewhere.
YouTube’s YPP overview and eligibility guidance explains the programme, while the expanded YPP availability list covers the earlier-access route. These official pages can change, so use them alongside what Studio shows for your channel rather than treating a saved article as a current decision. If the Earn page does not show an application option, read its eligibility message and follow any prompt to get notified when you can apply.
Location is only one part of the check. A channel may be in a supported country and still lack an eligible audience route, account security settings or channel standing. Conversely, a channel may qualify for one level of the programme without qualifying for every feature it hopes to use. Treat the Earn page as the working checklist, not as a promise that an application will be approved.
Understand the two eligibility routes
YouTube describes an earlier-access route to expanded YPP and a higher audience threshold for ad revenue sharing. As checked on 3 October 2026, the requirements were as follows. YouTube can revise them, so confirm the figures in its current YPP eligibility instructions before making plans around them.
| Route | Subscriber and activity requirements | Viewing route | What it can make available |
|---|---|---|---|
| Expanded YPP, earlier access | 500 subscribers and 3 valid public uploads in the previous 90 days | 3,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months, or 3 million qualified public Shorts views in the previous 90 days | Certain fan-funding and Shopping features, subject to their own requirements |
| Higher threshold for ad revenue sharing | 1,000 subscribers | 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months, or 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the previous 90 days | Eligibility to use ad revenue sharing and YouTube Premium revenue features, subject to terms and feature rules |
The first row is not a shortcut to ad revenue sharing. It is an earlier entry point for certain features, each of which can have separate age, location, content and contract conditions. The higher route is the one relevant to ad revenue sharing. Meeting it still only makes the channel eligible to apply and be reviewed; it does not mean adverts will appear on every video or that every monetisation feature will be enabled automatically.
The two viewing routes measure different activity. Shorts Feed watch time does not contribute to the 4,000 qualified public watch-hours threshold. Paid advertising campaign views and watch time also do not count towards eligibility thresholds, although YouTube says qualifying organic views that follow an ad campaign can count. Check the relevant Studio analytics and eligibility panels rather than adding every visible view or hour yourself.
For a channel that streams devotional music or an ambience loop, a public live broadcast may contribute eligible watch time if it meets YouTube’s rules and remains available as a public video. Do not assume every hour shown in a stream dashboard counts towards the YPP total. YouTube defines qualified public watch hours, and privacy changes or removing videos can affect eligibility. If you are considering whether a continuous broadcast will help, read the practical discussion of watch time from a 24/7 stream without treating a stream as a guaranteed route to a threshold.
A future change is already announced, but is not the rule to apply to the figures above. YouTube’s overview says ad and Premium entry thresholds for new applicants are scheduled to change on 1 February 2027 to 1,000 subscribers and either 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. The announcement says the expanded fan-funding and Shopping entry route remains at 500 subscribers with the three-upload condition and its current viewing alternatives. If you expect to apply after that date, recheck YouTube’s official guidance rather than relying on today’s table.
Meet the account and channel prerequisites
Audience figures are only one part of an application. YouTube’s standard requirements include following channel monetisation policies, being in a country or region where YPP is available, having no active Community Guidelines strikes, turning on 2-Step Verification for the Google Account and having access to advanced features. You also need one active AdSense for YouTube account linked to the channel, or to set one up through Studio during the application.
Check these points before you reach the audience threshold. In your Google Account, confirm that 2-Step Verification is enabled. In Studio, review channel status, advanced features access and any outstanding policy notices. Resolve account-access or security problems early: an audience milestone does not remove those requirements, and a confusing ownership setup can make an application harder to manage.
Do not create a new AdSense for YouTube account outside the Studio application flow. If you already have an active account, be ready to link it; if you need one, use the option Studio presents. Payment setup and eligibility for particular features may also have age and guardian requirements. For example, YouTube says ad revenue payments require the account holder to be 18 or an adult guardian to handle AdSense payments, while some fan-funding features require the creator to be 18. Check the feature-specific requirements rather than assuming the base YPP application settles them all.
Review your channel’s content against YouTube’s monetisation policies before applying. The channel monetisation policies discuss originality, reused content and repetitive or mass-produced material. These rules matter to channels that use loops, compilations, stock visuals or music from outside sources: having permission to use an asset and having content that meets YPP monetisation policies are separate questions. Keep records of permissions and make the channel’s own contribution clear, but do not treat either step as a guarantee of acceptance.
Apply in YouTube Studio under Earn
When Studio indicates that the channel can apply, sign in to the channel’s owner account, open YouTube Studio and choose Earn from the left-hand menu. If the application is available, select Apply Now. The exact screen wording can vary as Studio changes, so follow the prompts displayed for your account and consult YouTube’s current application instructions if a step is unclear.
The Earn area is also where you can see progress towards eligibility and, where available, request a notification when the channel becomes eligible. This is useful if the channel is close to a route but not there yet: it avoids confusing a subscriber count with the required combination of subscribers and qualifying views or hours. For a channel that is still building its public-video library, a guide to how many videos a 24/7 streaming service can use may help with planning the material, but uploads alone do not replace YPP’s audience and policy requirements.
Before you submit, check the channel identity and the videos visitors will encounter first. YouTube reviews the channel as a whole, so make sure the description, titles and public catalogue accurately represent what you publish. If you run a live channel, explain the programme clearly and make sure any uploaded or repeated material has an identifiable purpose and your original contribution. Avoid making rushed privacy or deletion changes simply to present a tidier catalogue: YouTube says changing video privacy or deleting videos may affect an application.
The application is not a separate guarantee or certification of a particular broadcast method. YouTube evaluates the channel against its policies and programme conditions. An always-on stream can be part of a channel’s publishing plan, but the decision is about the channel and its content, not whether the broadcast stays online overnight. If you are comparing ways to keep a loop going without leaving a personal computer on, the guide to running an ambient music channel covers the operational choice separately from YPP eligibility.
Accept terms and link AdSense for YouTube
The first application stage is accepting YouTube’s base terms. Read the terms Studio presents and accept them only when you are ready to proceed. YPP membership does not automatically switch on every way to earn; after approval, you may need to review and accept separate monetisation modules for the features you want to use.
Next, complete the AdSense for YouTube step in Studio. Select Start to link an existing active account or begin setting one up through the flow. Use the account that should receive payments and check that the account details are accurate. If you have more than one channel or Google Account, take care not to connect the wrong account. Follow Studio’s instructions rather than opening an unrelated AdSense account in another tab and assuming it will be associated correctly.
Once the terms and account steps are complete, look for Get Reviewed. A status of In Progress indicates YouTube has received the application. Keep a note of the status and return to Studio’s Earn area to monitor updates. If Studio asks for additional action, respond there; do not assume that accepting the base terms means the review has finished.
If a particular feature is your goal, check its module and eligibility conditions after acceptance. Ad revenue sharing, fan funding and Shopping are not interchangeable benefits. You may be accepted into YPP and still need to meet an individual feature’s conditions or accept the relevant module before using it.
What happens during channel review
YouTube says that automated systems and human reviewers assess the channel as a whole against its monetisation policies. Its policy guidance says reviewers may look at the channel’s main theme, most-viewed and newest videos, videos that account for the largest share of watch time, metadata such as titles and thumbnails, and the About section. That is a description of areas that may be considered, not a complete checklist or a formula for approval.
Make it straightforward to understand what the channel contributes. A devotional channel, for example, should clearly distinguish its own performances, commentary or production from material it has simply reposted. A lofi or study channel using repeating visuals should be able to explain the work behind its music, arrangement or presentation. YouTube’s policies expect monetised content to be original; borrowed material needs significant transformation, and repetitive or generic mass-produced material may not qualify. Adding a logo or changing a title does not by itself establish meaningful original value.
A channel’s continuous schedule does not exempt it from these checks. Plan the stream around work you have the rights to use and content that meets YouTube’s requirements. For a prerecorded broadcast, a bitrate and stream-settings checklist can help with playback planning, but technical stability is distinct from originality and policy compliance. A stream that runs cleanly can still be rejected if its content does not meet the monetisation policies.
YouTube says a decision typically takes about one month, though application volume, system issues, resource limits and additional review can extend the wait. Check status in Studio’s Earn area. YouTube also says that if your counts drop below the threshold after you have met it and applied, that does not stop the review; changing a video’s privacy setting or deleting videos may affect the application, so avoid changes without understanding their effect.
If YouTube declines the first application, its current guidance says you can appeal within 21 days or reapply after 30 days. Following a later rejection, the stated wait before reapplying is 90 days. Read the reason and the policy cited in Earn, then make meaningful changes before applying again. An appeal should address the decision and the channel’s evidence; reapplying without addressing the issue is unlikely to resolve it. Check the current instructions in Studio because these options and timings may change.
Prepare the channel, not just the application
The period before applying is a good time to audit the public channel as a viewer would. Look at the latest uploads, the videos that attract the most viewing and the description. Ask whether a new visitor can tell what the channel makes, who made it and what is original about it. This is more useful than trying to disguise the catalogue or relying on one popular upload to represent everything else.
For a channel with a long-running stream, explain how the material is assembled and what changes over time. A loop can be technically effective while leaving authorship unclear; conversely, a stream can include original work without narrating its production in every minute. Use the About section and video descriptions accurately, and retain documentation for third-party material where appropriate. These steps clarify the channel’s work, but reviewers make the decision under YouTube’s rules.
Keep eligibility and application status in view while preparing. If you are using public uploads to satisfy the expanded route, check that they are valid public uploads in the required lookback period. If your route is watch hours, distinguish qualified public watch hours from Shorts Feed activity, paid campaign activity and private or removed material. Studio’s figures and official definitions take precedence over a personal spreadsheet that may count different categories.
A channel operator may also need to decide how much of the broadcast to automate. If the practical difficulty is keeping a file live while your own computer is off, StreamNeo removes that specific burden by letting you upload a video, provide the YouTube stream key and leave the broadcast running while the computer is switched off. That addresses continuity, not the YPP review: it does not make content eligible or guarantee monetisation.

FAQ
How many subscribers do I need to get monetised?
As checked on 3 October 2026, the expanded YPP route started at 500 subscribers with three valid public uploads in the previous 90 days and a qualifying watch-hours or Shorts-views route. The higher ad revenue route required 1,000 subscribers plus its own viewing threshold. Requirements can change, and neither subscriber count alone nor meeting a threshold guarantees acceptance.
Does the 500-subscriber route include ad revenue sharing?
No. The earlier-access route can make certain fan-funding and Shopping features available, subject to each feature’s conditions. Ad revenue sharing uses the higher threshold described above, and you still need to be accepted and meet applicable terms.
Where do I apply for YPP?
Open YouTube Studio, choose Earn, and select Apply Now when the channel is eligible and the option appears. Follow the current prompts to accept the base terms and link or create an AdSense for YouTube account through Studio. The Earn area also shows application status.
How long does YouTube take to review an application?
YouTube says a decision typically takes about one month, but it can take longer. Monitor Studio for the status and any request for action. If the channel is declined, use the reason shown in Earn and check YouTube’s current appeal or reapplication instructions before proceeding.
