A UPS can keep an OBS YouTube stream running through a short power interruption, but only if it powers the computer and the network equipment the stream needs. If the computer shuts down, OBS cannot reconnect until the computer has power and has booted again.

Automatic reconnect is useful when the computer remains on and the connection to YouTube is interrupted. After a full shutdown, recovery also depends on the computer's firmware settings, the state of OBS and its sources, your internet connection, and whether YouTube still has the event ready to resume.

Separate internet drops from power loss

A stream can stop for several different reasons, and the right recovery method depends on which layer failed. A brief internet interruption is not the same as a mains power cut, even if both appear to viewers as a frozen or ended broadcast.

If the streaming computer stays powered and the modem or router remains available, OBS may reconnect to YouTube after the network returns. OBS's automatic reconnect setting is intended for this kind of interruption. It does not restart a computer, turn on a dead router, or repair a camera that has failed to reconnect.

A power interruption creates a wider failure. The computer may shut down, the router may lose power, USB devices may disconnect, and the internet provider's equipment may also be affected. When power returns, each item may recover at a different speed. You therefore need to check the chain rather than assume that a single setting has restored the broadcast.

The useful distinction is:

What failed What may help What still needs checking
Internet connection while the computer stays on OBS automatic reconnect Router, connection, stream status and source output
Short mains interruption UPS battery-backed outlets UPS capacity, connected load and remaining runtime
Computer powered off Power-on-after-AC-restoration firmware setting Whether the computer actually boots and launches OBS
OBS reconnects but YouTube is not live YouTube Live Control Room workflow Preview, event state and the Go live control
Camera or other source stays disconnected Source-specific troubleshooting Camera power, USB connection and OBS source output

Before changing settings, identify what happened. Ask whether the computer lights and fans stayed on, whether the router restarted, whether other devices in the building also lost power, and whether the stream ended or merely stopped sending data. This prevents you from treating a total shutdown as an OBS connection problem.

For a broader comparison of the hardware and hosted approaches, see how much a VPS costs to stream prerecorded videos to YouTube 24/7. A VPS may remove the home power dependency, but it does not make every internet or platform problem disappear.

Connect the essential equipment to a UPS

A UPS, or uninterruptible power supply, sits between the wall socket and your equipment. During a power cut, a battery-backed outlet can continue supplying power for a limited period. That period depends on the UPS, the battery condition and the load connected to it.

For an OBS stream, the essential load normally includes the streaming computer and the modem, router or other network equipment required to reach YouTube. If only the computer is connected to battery backup, the computer may remain on while the router goes off. OBS cannot send a stream through a network connection that is unavailable.

Use the UPS outlets marked for battery backup, not outlets that provide surge protection only. The exact labels differ by model, so check the product manual. APC's guidance describes battery-backup outlets as suitable for a computer and critical peripherals, while also making clear that the backup period is limited. You can refer to the APC manual guidance on battery-backed outlets when checking the arrangement of a compatible unit.

Connect only equipment that is necessary for continuity. A monitor is useful during setup but may not be needed to keep the stream running. Speakers, printers, phone chargers and other non-essential devices consume capacity that could otherwise support the computer and network equipment. Do not disconnect a device blindly if the stream depends on it, such as an external audio interface or a powered USB hub.

Size the UPS for the real load

Do not choose a UPS from a claimed runtime found in a general guide and assume it applies to your setup. A desktop computer with several displays, an external graphics card, cameras and lighting can draw quite differently from a small mini PC running a prerecorded loop. The router and modem add their own load as well.

Measure or estimate the combined demand of the equipment you plan to protect, then compare that with the UPS's rated capacity and the bridge time you actually need. A larger battery may give you more time, but it may also cost more and occupy more space. Battery age, temperature and the condition of the equipment affect the result.

A UPS is most useful when you know what you want it to do. For a short flicker, it may prevent the computer from restarting. For a longer outage, it gives you time to stop the stream cleanly or wait for power to return, provided its battery lasts that long. It is not a replacement for mains electricity and cannot keep a stream running indefinitely.

Test the arrangement before relying on it overnight. With the stream stopped or during a planned maintenance window, confirm that the computer and network equipment remain powered when the wall supply is removed. Watch for warning sounds, unexpected reboots and devices that were accidentally connected to non-battery outlets. Restore mains power before the battery is exhausted.

Enable OBS automatic reconnect before the broadcast

OBS automatic reconnect helps when OBS is still running but its connection to the streaming service is interrupted. In OBS, open Settings, choose Advanced, and look for the automatic reconnect option. Menu labels can change between versions, so verify the wording in the version installed on your computer.

Enable it before starting the broadcast, then make a note of the setting as part of your stream checklist. OBS's official overview guide covers the relevant configuration areas, and its stream connection troubleshooting guidance explains the wider checks to make when a connection does not recover.

Automatic reconnect does not mean automatic recovery from every failure. It can help after a transient network interruption while the operating system, OBS and the required network equipment are still functioning. It cannot power on a computer, restore a router that has no electricity, recreate a missing stream key, or guarantee that a disconnected camera will return.

It is also possible for OBS to reconnect while the video or audio is wrong. For example, the application may be sending a black scene because a USB camera did not initialise after the power returned. Reconnection only addresses the connection between OBS and YouTube. You must still inspect the programme output and the sources.

Before a long broadcast, confirm that OBS can see the intended scene, audio meters move when they should, and the correct stream service and key are selected. If you change the stream key or event, test the new arrangement rather than assuming that the previous configuration remains correct.

The stream's technical settings are another separate concern. If you need to review resolution, frame rate or bitrate before testing recovery, use this YouTube Live settings guide for 720p 60fps in OBS as a starting point, then compare it with the current YouTube and OBS documentation for your own connection.

Configure supported firmware restart behaviour

A UPS can restore power to a computer without making the computer start. Many computers remain off after an outage unless their BIOS or UEFI includes a setting that tells them what to do when alternating-current power returns.

The setting may be called something like power on after AC loss, restore on AC power loss, or AC back. The exact name and available choices depend on the computer or motherboard. Some systems can remain off, some can turn on, and some can return to their previous power state.

Check the manual for the exact computer before changing firmware settings. APC explains that automatic computer restart after a UPS shutdown requires suitable BIOS support and configuration in its guidance on automatic restart after utility power returns. Schneider Electric gives the same practical warning in its explanation of why a computer may not reboot after a UPS has shut down and restarted it.

Do not confuse this setting with an OBS setting. OBS cannot run while the operating system is off. Firmware controls whether the hardware starts; the operating system controls whether applications launch; OBS controls the encoder connection once it is running.

If the computer does start automatically, it may still stop at a login screen, wait for a disk-recovery prompt, or leave OBS closed. For unattended operation, check how your operating system handles startup and whether OBS is configured to open with the right profile. Do this carefully and test it locally. A firmware setting that works on one machine may not exist on another.

A restart test is more useful than a promise. Stop the stream, save your work and simulate the recovery procedure in a controlled window. Confirm that the computer starts after power is restored, that the operating system reaches the desktop or intended unattended state, that OBS opens, and that the correct scene collection and profile are selected.

Prepare the YouTube event for recovery

YouTube separates the encoder connection from the action that makes the event live. The encoder sends the stream URL and key, YouTube receives the incoming feed, Live Control Room shows a preview, and the creator may then need to choose Go live.

Before an outage, review the event's stream settings in YouTube Studio. YouTube's Manage live stream settings documentation describes auto-start and auto-stop and explains that reused stream settings can copy those selections. The meaning of these controls matters when you are trying to resume the same event after OBS has stopped sending.

Do not assume that a reconnect always resumes the same public broadcast. The result depends on the event configuration and what happened while the encoder was offline. YouTube's published workflow does not provide a universal recovery grace period that applies to every stream configuration.

If you are setting up an encoder event, follow YouTube's official encoder workflow. It covers the stream URL and key, waiting for the incoming preview, and selecting Go live. These are separate stages, so your recovery checklist should include all of them.

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archiving rule, not a promise that a stream interrupted by a power cut will resume or remain publicly live. Treat it as a separate piece of event behaviour.

For a channel based on a repeating file, also check that the content is ready when OBS starts again. If the source depends on a local file, confirm that the file path is unchanged and the drive is available. If your aim is to avoid keeping a home computer on, compare that arrangement with alternatives to keeping a computer on for a 24/7 YouTube stream in India. The relevant trade-off is whether recovery should depend on your household power, internet and computer starting correctly.

Check OBS and YouTube after power returns

Treat recovery as a sequence of checks. Do not rely on a UPS alarm stopping or a computer light appearing as proof that the audience can see the intended stream.

First, confirm that the computer has booted fully. Check that the router and modem have power and that another device can reach the internet. If the ISP connection has not returned, OBS may remain disconnected even though the local equipment is on.

Next, open OBS and check the following:

  • The intended scene or playlist is active.
  • The video preview shows the expected output rather than a black or frozen source.
  • Audio meters respond where expected.
  • The camera, capture device or media source is present.
  • OBS reports a connection to the streaming service.
  • The stream key and service settings still match the intended YouTube event.

A camera may need to be unplugged and reconnected, or its source may need to be refreshed, but do not make that your first assumption. Check whether the device has power and whether the operating system recognises it. A source failure is separate from an OBS reconnect failure.

Then open YouTube Live Control Room. Look for the event you intended to resume and check whether YouTube shows an incoming preview or healthy encoder feed. A connected encoder feed is not necessarily the same thing as a public live broadcast. If the event is not live, follow the current on-screen workflow and use Go live where appropriate.

If the original event has ended or is no longer suitable for resumption, do not repeatedly restart OBS without checking the event state. Create or select the correct event according to YouTube's current workflow, then verify the preview before making it public.

Once the stream is restored, watch it for a short period rather than leaving immediately. Confirm that the video advances, audio remains present and the connection does not repeatedly drop. Record what failed and what restored it. That note can tell you whether the next improvement should be a larger UPS, a different network arrangement, a source change or a firmware setting.

Know what a UPS cannot protect against

A UPS protects selected equipment from a loss of mains power. It does not protect the stream from every dependency around that equipment.

It cannot preserve an internet connection that is itself down. Your router may have battery power while the ISP's local equipment, fibre termination or wider network is unavailable. If the router has restarted but the internet light or connection has not returned, wait for the provider's service or use an appropriate backup connection if your setup supports one.

It cannot keep the stream running beyond the battery's available capacity. Runtime changes with the combined load, battery condition and outage length. There is no setup-independent runtime figure that applies to every OBS computer and router.

It cannot repair a computer that fails to boot, a drive that is unavailable, a firmware prompt, an operating-system error or an application that does not start. It also cannot guarantee that an external camera, capture device or audio interface will recover after losing power.

It cannot make YouTube accept an event in every state. The event may require a preview check or a manual Go live action, and its auto-start or auto-stop configuration may affect what happens after an encoder interruption. Check the current official YouTube instructions rather than treating a previous recovery as a rule.

Finally, it cannot remove the need for testing. A UPS that has never been tested may be connected incorrectly, overloaded or unable to provide the expected battery time. A computer configured to power on after AC restoration may still fail to launch OBS correctly. The reliable approach is to test each layer during a controlled window and keep a written recovery sequence near the equipment.

For channels that mainly play a prepared loop, you can also review how to run event replays as a continuous YouTube live stream. The content workflow and the power-recovery workflow are different, but separating them makes it easier to decide what must be restored locally.

FAQ

Can OBS reconnect after a power cut?

Only if the computer and the required network equipment stayed powered, or after the computer has restarted and OBS is running again. Automatic reconnect helps with a connection interruption while OBS remains operational; it cannot run on a computer without power.

Will a UPS keep my YouTube stream live all night?

No. A UPS provides temporary battery power, and its runtime depends on the connected load, battery condition and outage length. It cannot preserve an internet connection that is down or keep the stream running indefinitely.

Does a computer restart automatically when power returns?

Not necessarily. The computer and its BIOS or UEFI must support a suitable power-on-after-AC-restoration setting, and that setting must be configured correctly. Even then, check that the operating system and OBS start without requiring manual input.

What should I check when power returns?

Confirm that the computer and network are working, then check OBS's scene, sources, audio, connection and stream settings. In YouTube Live Control Room, verify the incoming preview and event state, and select Go live if the current workflow requires it.
