If you want to keep OBS streaming overnight on a Windows PC in India, prevent the computer from sleeping, configure OBS to retry supported network interruptions, and plan separately for local power cuts. These controls reduce avoidable interruptions, but none guarantees that a broadcast will continue all night.

The important distinction is that Windows sleep, an internet drop and a power cut are different failures. The right setting for one will not repair the others, so work through the checklist in that order before leaving the stream unattended.

Keep the plugged-in Windows PC awake

OBS needs the computer to keep executing code. Windows sleep places the device in a low-power state in which the processor is not executing normal application work, so an OBS scene cannot continue producing a live output while the PC is asleep. Microsoft explains the relationship between Windows power states and processor activity in its Windows power management documentation.

On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep & hibernate timeouts. Find the controls for when the device is plugged in, then set the sleep timeout to a value that will not put the PC to sleep during the planned broadcast. The exact wording can vary with Windows updates, so look for the plugged-in sleep setting rather than relying on a screenshot from an older guide.

Keep the PC connected to mains power while streaming. A laptop that begins the night on battery can change its behaviour as the battery level falls, and a desktop without mains power will stop as soon as its available power is exhausted. Check the Windows taskbar or power settings before starting, rather than assuming that a cable is delivering power.

If you use a laptop, check what happens when the lid closes. Windows can be configured to sleep when the lid is closed, and the relevant action is controlled through Power Options. Unless you have deliberately verified that closing the lid leaves the computer awake, leave the lid open. Also avoid pressing the physical power button after starting the stream, because its configured action may be sleep, shutdown or hibernate.

Place the laptop where the display can remain open without being covered by bedding or another object. This is not a streaming setting, but it reduces the chance of heat building up around the machine during a long unattended session. For a desktop, check that the power cable, monitor cable and network cable are not under tension and that the computer is not sharing a loose extension connection with equipment that is frequently switched off.

Set screen-off and sleep controls separately

Screen-off and sleep are not the same setting. Turning off the display can save energy and reduce light in a room while the PC continues running OBS. Sleep suspends ordinary processor work, which is the interruption you need to avoid.

You can therefore allow the screen to turn off after a short period while setting the plugged-in sleep timeout to prevent sleep during the broadcast. This is usually more sensible than keeping a bright monitor on all night. It also avoids treating a dark screen as proof that OBS has stopped. If the display is off, wake it briefly when you need to inspect the system, but do not change the sleep setting by guesswork.

After applying the settings, confirm them while the PC is plugged in. Windows may use different values for battery and mains operation. A laptop can appear correctly configured when checked on battery and then use another timeout after you connect the charger, or the reverse.

Do not depend on moving the mouse, playing a video or leaving a settings window open to keep the computer awake. Those are workarounds rather than a clear power policy. A deliberate plugged-in sleep setting is easier to inspect and repeat when you prepare the machine for another overnight broadcast.

If you have changed advanced power settings in the past, review them as well. A power plan, lid action or button action can override what you expect from the basic Windows screen. Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guidance is the appropriate place to check current menu names and available controls.

Enable OBS automatic reconnect

OBS includes automatic reconnect controls for output interruptions. Open OBS and go to Settings > Advanced, then find the network section containing automatic reconnect. The available controls include automatic reconnect, a retry delay and a maximum retry count. Choose values deliberately and record them so you know what OBS is expected to do if the connection drops.

Automatic reconnect is useful for some network interruptions. If your broadband connection briefly disappears and returns, OBS may be able to retry the output rather than requiring you to sit at the computer. The retry delay controls how soon it attempts another connection, while the maximum retry setting limits how long it continues trying according to the configuration you select. OBS documents the relevant controls in its English interface settings.

This setting does not keep Windows awake. It does not turn a powered-off PC back on, restore a failed router, or guarantee that YouTube will accept a new connection. It also does not convert a long outage into a continuous broadcast. Treat it as a response to a supported output or network interruption, not as general unattended recovery.

Before leaving OBS, look at the status area and confirm that the stream is actually live. Starting a scene collection or opening a video file is not the same as sending a broadcast. Check the selected service, stream key and output resolution as part of the same preparation, but do not paste or publish the key in a screenshot or message.

If the stream contains a playlist or repeated recorded material, check the content path as well. A stream can remain technically connected while showing a black frame or stopping when a file ends. If your issue is a blank transition rather than a network failure, the OBS black-screen troubleshooting guide for 24/7 streams addresses a different part of the chain.

Check network stability before leaving the stream

A reconnect setting is only useful if the internet connection returns and the computer can reach the streaming service again. Before an overnight broadcast, inspect the complete path: the Windows PC, its Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, the router, the broadband or mobile connection and the YouTube ingest connection.

Ethernet is preferable when it is practical because it removes the wireless link between the PC and router from the list of possible interruptions. If you must use Wi-Fi, place the PC where the signal is stable and avoid moving the router or changing bands immediately before going live. Do not assume that a high speed test result proves that an unattended connection will remain available for the whole night. A speed test is a short observation, not a continuity guarantee.

Restarting the router just before going live can create the very interruption you are trying to avoid. If maintenance is necessary, complete it earlier, allow the connection to settle, and then watch OBS reconnect before treating the setup as ready. Make sure the router’s power adapter is firmly connected and that any fibre, Ethernet or mobile broadband equipment required for service is included in your power plan.

If your connection uses a data limit, check the expected transfer before choosing a long stream. A live video upload can use substantial data, and a plan that works for occasional broadcasts may not suit continuous output. Do not infer the exact amount from a general internet plan description; calculate from your OBS output settings and confirm the allowance with your provider.

The public broadcast also depends on YouTube accepting and maintaining the live session. Reconnect behaviour at the OBS end cannot prevent a platform-side interruption, stream termination or account issue. If YouTube has ended a previous continuous broadcast, investigate that separately using the reasons YouTube may end a 24/7 live stream, rather than changing Windows sleep settings alone.

For channels in India, also consider the timing of local network maintenance and the type of connection available at the location. A home fibre line, a mobile hotspot and a shared office connection have different failure modes. If the stream matters to your audience, write down what you will do after an outage instead of assuming the first reconnect attempt will resolve every case.

Plan for local power cuts and UPS runtime

A network reconnect cannot help when the PC loses power. Local power cuts, voltage disturbances and an accidentally switched-off extension board require a separate plan. A computer UPS battery backup can provide a bridge during some interruptions, but its useful runtime depends on the connected electrical load and the capacity of the particular unit.

Do not choose a UPS from the PC’s brand name alone. List the equipment that must remain on: usually the computer and the network device needed for the stream. A desktop with a separate monitor may draw more than a laptop, and adding a monitor, speakers, router, modem or other accessories increases the load. Schneider Electric’s UPS buying guide for India explains that the UPS should be sized above the total watt load and that additional connected equipment reduces available runtime.

The useful comparison is not simply the UPS capacity printed on a product page. Check the supported load, the connected wattage, the outlets needed for essential equipment and the manufacturer’s runtime information at an appropriate load. A runtime estimate for a lightly loaded setup may not apply to your PC. If you have not measured or reasonably established the load, do not promise yourself a particular number of hours.

For an overnight stream, a normal computer UPS should not be treated as an overnight power source. It may give you time to save work, shut down cleanly or ride through a shorter interruption, but the duration depends on the battery, load, battery condition and power event. If you need the broadcast to continue through a long outage, you need a power design that has been assessed for that load and duration, not just a UPS placed beside the desk.

Connect only essential equipment when testing the backup plan. If the monitor is not needed after the stream is configured, leaving it off the UPS may preserve power for the computer and network device. However, confirm that the devices you exclude do not provide a required connection or control function. Label the UPS outlets and cables so another person does not unplug the network device while trying to tidy the desk.

A UPS also does not repair an internet outage. It can keep powered equipment running, but the broadband service may still be unavailable, and the router may need to re-establish its connection. This is why power continuity and network continuity should be planned as two separate controls rather than described as one backup system.

Test the setup before an overnight broadcast

Do not make the first overnight stream the first time you test the complete arrangement. Start a private or otherwise low-risk test broadcast and leave the same PC, cables, Windows settings, OBS scene and network equipment in the configuration you intend to use at night.

Use the test to confirm five things:

  • OBS is sending the intended scene, video and audio.
  • The display can turn off without putting Windows to sleep.
  • OBS shows the expected automatic reconnect settings.
  • The PC and network equipment remain powered through the available backup arrangement.
  • The content continues when a file changes, loops or reaches its end.

Watch the stream from a separate device rather than relying only on the OBS preview. The viewing device can reveal a frozen picture, missing audio or a broadcast that has ended even when the streaming PC still appears busy. Check the YouTube live control room as well, but remember that a test is evidence about that configuration at that time, not a guarantee for a future outage.

If you want to test reconnect behaviour, use a controlled and low-risk interruption. For example, disconnect the network path briefly only when you are comfortable ending the test if recovery fails. Observe whether OBS retries, how long it waits and what status it shows after the connection returns. Do not test by switching off the PC or cutting mains power unless you understand the consequences for the test broadcast.

Check the UPS with the intended connected equipment and read its load or runtime indication. A label or theoretical capacity is not a measurement of your actual arrangement. If the unit reports overload, heat, battery trouble or a warning condition, remove non-essential equipment and investigate before relying on it.

Prepare a short recovery note beside the computer. Include the OBS profile and scene collection in use, the intended YouTube channel, the router restart procedure and the safe way to stop the PC. Do not write the stream key in an exposed notebook. The note is for reducing confusion after a failure, not for replacing a person who can respond to every problem.

What these steps cannot prevent

Keeping Windows awake prevents one avoidable class of interruption: the operating system suspending the work OBS needs to perform. Screen-off settings allow you to reduce display use without choosing sleep. Automatic reconnect can respond to some network or output interruptions. A UPS can provide limited power continuity when its load and battery support the event.

None of those measures guarantees an uninterrupted YouTube broadcast. They cannot prevent every router failure, broadband outage, power cut, battery fault, Windows update, application crash, damaged cable, overheating problem, content error or platform-side decision. A UPS cannot create internet service, and OBS reconnect cannot run while the computer is powered off.

Windows updates deserve particular attention. Do not begin an overnight stream immediately before a planned restart or a maintenance window. Review update and restart behaviour on the machine, but do not disable security updates permanently just to keep OBS running. A safer approach is to schedule maintenance for a time when you can observe the PC and then repeat the test.

An unattended launch can be added as an advanced measure. OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter in its launch parameters guide. Its Windows automation notes also require the shortcut or task’s Start in directory to point to the folder containing obs64.exe. A launch argument does not solve Windows login, a missing network connection, a power failure, an invalid scene, a changed stream key or a service-side failure, so test it carefully before depending on it.

If the specific problem is leaving a Windows machine running and powered for the whole broadcast, StreamNeo removes that particular PC dependency by letting you upload the prepared video, add the YouTube stream key and run the channel without keeping your own computer on. That changes the operating arrangement, but it does not remove the need to check your content, channel and YouTube requirements.

For some readers, local OBS remains the right choice. It gives you direct control over scenes, sources and live changes, and it may suit a channel that needs a camera, microphone or interactive production. For a recorded loop whose main requirement is unattended playback, compare the work of maintaining a local machine with the alternatives discussed in VPS bandwidth costs for a 24/7 YouTube stream. Choose based on the failure you are trying to remove, not on the assumption that any one setup is immune to failure.

Before committing, compare the operating options on the pricing page. When the file and channel are ready, start free — 24-hour trial, no card.

FAQ

Can OBS stream overnight if the monitor is turned off?

Yes, the display can usually turn off while the PC remains awake. Configure screen-off and sleep separately, and verify the plugged-in sleep timeout so Windows does not suspend the computer. The dark display alone does not show whether the broadcast is still working, so check the stream from another device during testing.

Will OBS automatic reconnect fix a power cut?

No. Automatic reconnect is intended for supported output or network interruptions and cannot operate while the PC or router has lost power. A UPS may keep equipment running for a limited, load-dependent period, but it does not guarantee continued internet service or an uninterrupted stream.

How long will a UPS run my streaming PC?

There is no reliable runtime without the actual connected load and the UPS battery information. A desktop, monitor and network equipment can draw a different load from a laptop and router. Check the manufacturer’s runtime guidance for the connected wattage and test the complete arrangement before relying on it.

Should I use OBS or another setup for a recorded 24/7 channel?

OBS is useful when you need local control over scenes, audio, cameras or live changes. If the channel mainly plays prepared files, a setup that does not require your Windows PC to stay on may remove the overnight power and sleep concerns. In either case, test the content, network path and recovery process rather than assuming the chosen setup will handle every failure automatically.
