During a YouTube live stream or Premiere, you can feature a live-chat message by opening its More menu and choosing Pin. You can do this on a computer or in the YouTube app, but only the channel owner can pin, and only one message can be pinned at a time.

The item is a live-chat message, even if you searched for how to pin a “comment”. Pinning another message replaces the current pin; to clear it, choose Unpin from the pinned message’s More menu. The steps below follow YouTube’s chat controls, which can look different across interfaces.

Open chat on a live stream or Premiere

First, make sure you are looking at a live stream or Premiere that has live chat open. The pin control belongs to the chat message menu, not to the comments area below an ordinary uploaded video. YouTube’s live chat instructions for computer and Android describe pinning in the context of a live stream or Premiere.

On the event’s watch page, find the live chat panel. If the chat is hidden or collapsed, open it using the control shown on that page. The exact placement may vary with screen size and layout; the important distinction is that you need the stream’s live-chat messages, not a video’s comment thread.

A Premiere also has live chat while it is running, so the same basic workflow applies there. If you are watching on a phone, use the YouTube app route rather than assuming that a mobile browser will show the same controls. YouTube documents the app and computer paths separately.

Before choosing a message, check that you are using the channel owner’s account. YouTube says moderators and viewers do not have the permission to pin messages. Having access to moderation tools does not by itself grant the pin control.

Choose the message to feature

The channel owner can pin their own message or a viewer’s message. Choose the one piece of information viewers most need to see while the conversation continues: for example, a short note that a devotional session is starting, where to find a local news bulletin, or which study topic is on screen. A pin is a way to give one chat message prominence, not a replacement for a stream title or description.

Keep the message useful without making it depend on a detail that will quickly become stale. If you pin a start-time reminder and the event changes, update the pin promptly. If you pin a viewer’s question or contribution, make sure it is the one you mean to highlight; selecting a message from fast-moving chat can be fiddly.

YouTube says pinned live-chat messages appear below Super Chat. This means a pin is not necessarily the first element a viewer sees when other featured chat elements are present. Avoid relying on it as the only place for essential information that must reach everyone, particularly viewers who join late or have chat closed.

For a 24/7 channel, make the content of the pin relevant to the current programme rather than assuming every viewer arrived at the same point. If viewers regularly ask about the running order, a separate playlist approach for old and new episodes may help organise the programme itself; the pin remains one message in chat, not a navigation system for the whole channel.

Pin a message on computer

Open the stream or Premiere’s live chat on your computer and locate the message you want to feature. Move to that message and open its More menu. YouTube’s computer instructions put the pin action in the menu attached to the chat message.

Select Pin from the menu. If YouTube presents a confirmation step in your current interface, review it and confirm. The selected message should then appear as the pinned chat message. YouTube documents the action as a message-level control, so make sure you opened the menu for the intended message rather than a general chat settings menu.

If the stream is busy, pause long enough to verify the sender and text before choosing. It is easy to click the adjacent message when chat is moving. Once pinned, check that the right message is displayed; if it is wrong, you can pin the intended one and replace it, or unpin the current message.

The computer route is useful when you are managing the event from a desktop and can keep the chat panel visible. It does not change who has permission: a moderator logged into their own account should not expect to pin simply because they can remove messages or manage other chat settings.

Pin a message in the YouTube app

Open the live stream or Premiere in the YouTube app and bring up its live chat. Find the message in the chat, tap its More menu, and choose Pin. YouTube’s mobile guidance identifies the YouTube app as the route for this action; the placement of controls can vary with the device and app version.

If you do not see the menu immediately, check that you are interacting with a message in live chat, not the video itself or the comments below a regular upload. You may need to tap the message or its adjacent menu icon to expose the available actions. Labels and layout are not guaranteed to match screenshots from another device, so follow the equivalent message-level More control if the visual arrangement differs.

On a small screen, avoid tapping while scrolling quickly through chat. First bring the intended message into view, then open its menu and read the available action. Once pinned, verify the result in chat. If the app shows no Pin option, consider whether you are signed in as the channel owner before assuming the app is malfunctioning.

The mobile and computer procedures are the same in principle: open the message’s More menu and select Pin. The practical difference is how you reach and interact with the message. For someone monitoring a continuous broadcast from a desk, a computer can leave the chat visible; if you are away from that setup, the app offers a direct route without changing the permission rule or one-message limit.

Replace the current pinned message

You can pin a different message when the current one is no longer the most useful. Open the More menu for the new message and choose Pin. YouTube states that pinning another message replaces the existing pinned message, and that only one message can be pinned at a time.

Treat replacement as a deliberate handover. If you are changing from a general welcome note to a temporary update, make sure the new note is still accurate and understandable to people who have just arrived. Do not write instructions that imply two chat messages can remain pinned together; the new pin takes the place of the old one.

For a channel with a regular programme, a brief pin can direct viewers to what is happening now, while the broadcast itself carries the longer-running content. If viewers need a more reliable sequence of programme segments, see how to keep playlist order consistent after an OBS restart. That is a separate playback concern: a playlist does not create additional pinned chat positions.

There is also no need to unpin the old message first just to feature another one. The documented replacement action is to pin the new message. This keeps the workflow simple when an event moves from one stage to another, such as a scheduled introduction followed by the main session. Recheck the chat after changing it so you know the intended message is now the one featured.

Unpin a message

To remove a pin without replacing it, open the More menu on the pinned message and select Unpin. This clears the featured-message state; it does not delete the message from chat. If your aim is only to stop highlighting it, unpin rather than using a separate moderation action.

If the message is no longer visible in the chat panel, look for the pinned item as displayed in the interface and use its own More menu. YouTube’s current help page is the best reference if the controls have moved or the menu differs from the one described here. Avoid assuming the message persists as a pin outside the live stream or Premiere chat; this guide concerns the live-chat pin only.

For an always-on channel, decide whether a pin is still useful as the programme changes. A message about a particular segment can become confusing later in the day, so replace it with a current one or unpin it. The control takes only a few steps, but the value depends on someone checking that the featured message still matches what viewers are seeing.

A pin is not a substitute for stream health or reliable playback. If the broadcast drops, a pinned chat message does not repair the stream; for a separate issue, use the practical checks in YouTube stream health and offline troubleshooting. Keep the message-management task and the broadcast-monitoring task distinct.

If Pin is not available

Start with account permissions. YouTube’s help says only the channel owner can pin live-chat messages, not moderators or viewers. If you are moderating on behalf of a channel, ask the owner to pin the message or use the owner’s account; other moderation controls do not imply pin permission. YouTube’s live chat moderation guidance describes moderation as a related but distinct set of controls.

Next, check the context. The message needs to be in a live stream or Premiere chat. A comment below an uploaded video is handled in the comments interface, not with the live-chat pin workflow. YouTube has a separate help page for posting and interacting with comments on computer; pinning a comment there is a different procedure and may have separate feature requirements.

Then check that you have opened the message-level More menu. A stream may show menus for settings or other chat functions, but those are not the same as the menu attached to a specific message. On a phone, make sure you are in the YouTube app route described for mobile rather than assuming controls in a browser will match it.

If the right account and context still do not show Pin, refresh your understanding against YouTube Help. Interface labels and availability can change, and this guide should not be read as a guarantee that every device, app version, or account view will look identical. Follow the current official instructions for your interface rather than repeatedly searching unrelated settings.

For stream operators, it helps to separate the broadcast setup from chat moderation. A stable stream can still have a chat permission issue, and a pin cannot improve video quality or recover a dropped broadcast. If a continuous channel is difficult to keep live because a computer needs to stay running, StreamNeo removes that particular burden: upload the video once, use the channel’s stream key, and the broadcast can run with your computer switched off.

FAQ

How do I pin a message in YouTube live chat?

Open the More menu on the message and choose Pin. The channel owner can pin their own message or a viewer’s message during a live stream or Premiere.

Can I pin more than one message at once?

No. YouTube’s live-chat guidance says only one message can be pinned at a time. Pinning another message replaces the existing pin.

Can a moderator pin a message for the channel owner?

YouTube says the channel owner, rather than moderators or viewers, can pin live-chat messages. A moderator may have other chat moderation controls, but that does not grant pin permission.

How do I remove a pin, and is it the same as pinning a video comment?

Open the pinned message’s More menu and choose Unpin. That is a live-chat action; pinning a comment under an uploaded video uses a different comments workflow.
