A continuous YouTube music setup can mean either listening privately without stopping or broadcasting music to viewers through YouTube Live. These are separate workflows: YouTube Music handles personal playback, while a public live stream needs a channel, an enabled live feature, a broadcast setup and appropriate rights for the music.

If you only want music while you work, start in YouTube Music. If you want viewers to join a devotional, bhajan, lofi, ambience or local music channel, follow the creator path below and treat music rights as a launch requirement rather than a later check.

Two meanings of continuous music

The first meaning is continuous personal listening. You open YouTube Music, select a station, album or playlist, and let the app choose or continue tracks for you. The audio is for your own listening session. It is not a public broadcast, and other people cannot join it as a live channel from your account.

The second meaning is a continuous live broadcast. You prepare audio and visuals, send them to a YouTube Live event, and let viewers watch or listen from the channel page. This is the model used by a 24/7 bhajan channel, a study station with background music, or a small business that wants an always-on branded stream.

The distinction matters because a YouTube Music subscription, a station or a playlist does not give you permission to rebroadcast the tracks. Likewise, background playback and downloads are listener features. They do not create a public live stream or provide broadcast rights.

For a private session, the main questions are which playback features your account has and whether your phone, browser or smart television can keep playing. For a public channel, the main questions are whether you control or have permission for every recording and composition, whether live streaming is enabled, and how the broadcast will continue when your own computer is not being watched.

Listen continuously with YouTube Music

For personal listening, open YouTube Music and choose the type of playback that matches your habit. A station can build a radio-like sequence around favourite songs, albums or artists. A playlist gives you a more deliberate selection, and shuffle changes the order without requiring you to choose each next track.

You can use the YouTube Music app on a phone or tablet, the web player in a browser, or a supported television and speaker setup. The exact controls differ by device, so test the arrangement you intend to use. A phone playing through a speaker is a different use case from a browser session that must remain open on a laptop.

If playback stops when you switch apps or lock the screen, check the entitlements attached to your account in India. Google’s India announcement of 12 March 2026 said background play and downloads for Premium Lite were being rolled out for most videos, while identifying YouTube Premium as the option for background playback that includes music content and YouTube Music Premium. Availability and entitlements can change, so confirm what your own account shows before relying on it overnight.

This is still personal playback. The fact that a station continues while your screen is off does not make it a live radio channel. You also should not capture that playback and send it to viewers unless you separately have the necessary rights and a suitable broadcast arrangement.

For a channel owner, it may help to think of this as two separate products. YouTube Music is the listener’s player. YouTube Live is the publisher’s distribution route. A feature in the first does not substitute for the permissions or controls required by the second.

Check account playback features in India

Before changing plans or troubleshooting your phone, identify the exact problem. There are several different reasons someone may describe their requirement as “continuous”.

You may want the music to continue while using another app. You may want it to continue with the screen locked. You may want downloads for listening where the connection is unreliable. Or you may want to publish the music so another person can listen from your channel. Only the first three are listener playback questions.

Sign in to the Google account you actually use, open the relevant YouTube or YouTube Music membership area, and read the features shown for India. Do not rely on an old screenshot, a plan description from another country or a feature that appeared on a different account. Google’s 12 March 2026 India announcement is useful context, but your account page is the better check for your current entitlement.

Then test the complete listening routine. Start a station or playlist, lock the phone, switch to another app, reconnect to the speaker and leave it for a meaningful period. If the purpose is sleep, prayer or study, test the conditions that will exist during that activity rather than testing only with the screen open in your hand.

Keep the distinction clear when explaining the setup to someone else. “YouTube Music keeps playing in the background” describes a private playback feature. “The channel is live all day” describes a public broadcast. They involve different controls, different risks and different answers to the question of what music you may use.

Broadcast music as a YouTube Live stream

To publish music for viewers, begin with the YouTube channel rather than the player. YouTube for Artists advises first-time live streams to be enabled at least 24 hours before the planned broadcast. Its guidance describes the route through Create, Go live and Enable, followed by phone verification. Use the current instructions on the YouTube for Artists live-streaming guide because the interface and eligibility checks can change.

Do this preparation before you have finished the artwork or announced a launch. A channel that has not completed live activation may not be ready when the music file is ready. Allow time for verification, a private test and a review of the stream page from another device.

You then need a source for the audio and visuals. This could be a prepared video containing licensed music and a simple visual loop, a live production assembled from authorised elements, or a playlist of files that you own or are permitted to use. The public stream should have a clear purpose: a devotional loop, a lofi visualiser, a local information channel or another format that viewers can understand from the title and artwork.

YouTube for Artists presents an encoder as a way to gain more control and customisation than a simple mobile or webcam stream. An encoder is therefore an optional production choice, not something you should assume is mandatory for every channel. If you use one, learn how it handles the selected audio source, video file, reconnection and scene changes before making it the basis of an overnight broadcast.

For a prerecorded channel, the important test is continuity. Confirm that the audio does not fall silent between files, that the visual does not freeze unexpectedly, and that the stream remains understandable on a phone. A simple, stable presentation is usually easier to monitor than a complicated scene with many moving parts.

If you plan to move between several videos, decide how that hand-off will work before launch. The guide on streaming different videos in a YouTube Live playlist without a gap is relevant when the channel needs a sequence rather than one file repeated for the entire broadcast.

Prepare a rights-cleared music source

A live broadcast needs permission for the music it sends to viewers. Check every recording and composition, not just the name of the album or the person who uploaded a copy. A single track can involve rights in the recording, the underlying composition and other elements such as artwork or a spoken sample.

Possible routes can include music you created and control, permission obtained from the relevant rights holders, public-domain material, a Creative Commons work used within its licence terms, or music from the YouTube Audio Library. YouTube’s copyright explainer describes these routes and also warns that none automatically guarantees the absence of a Content ID claim or copyright strike. Rules and exceptions can differ by country, so check the current official guidance for the material you intend to use.

Keep evidence of permission in a folder that someone else on the channel can understand. Record the track name, creator, source, licence or permission wording, territory, permitted use, duration and any credit requirement. If permission was agreed by email or a contract, retain the complete exchange rather than only a screenshot of one sentence.

A licence for an ordinary upload may not cover a continuous live broadcast. Ask specifically whether the permission covers YouTube Live, public performance, the countries where viewers may watch, monetisation if relevant, the period of use and the particular recording. If a music provider says your channel must be allowlisted through Content ID, ask for that process before going live.

YouTube says live streams are scanned for third-party content. Its guidance on copyright issues with live streams explains that identified content can lead to a placeholder replacing the content, and that a stream can be interrupted or terminated if the issue remains. The same guidance warns that a stream may still be interrupted even when you have a licence if the channel has not been allowlisted by the rights holder.

That is why “I bought the song” is not a sufficient broadcast check. Buying a track for private listening normally answers a listener question. It does not necessarily answer whether your channel may transmit that recording to an audience.

Do not treat Creator Music as a general solution for this use case. YouTube’s Creator Music usage details state that its tracks are for long-form videos, not live streams or Shorts. The same official page describes availability as focused on United States YouTube Partner Programme creators, with expansion outside the United States pending in the cited guidance. It should not be presented as an India live-music licensing route.

If your source is a devotional recording, regional song, film track or independent release, identify the actual rights holder rather than assuming that age, popularity or local availability makes it free to broadcast. If the rights position is unclear, replace the track with material whose licence you can document.

Build a setup that can survive the night

Once the source is cleared, separate the broadcast into three checks: the file, the YouTube event and the operating method.

First, play the complete file or sequence from beginning to end. Listen for a clipped opening, a sudden silence, a loud change between tracks and a visual that ends before the audio. For a bhajan or prayer channel, check that any spoken introduction is not cut off. For a study or ambience channel, check that low-level sound does not disappear after compression or a source change.

Second, create or schedule the YouTube Live event with a clear title, description and thumbnail. Set the visibility deliberately while testing. Use a private or unlisted test where appropriate, then view it from a separate device and network. This exposes problems that are hidden when you watch only the local preview.

Third, choose how the broadcast will run. A computer in your home can send the stream, but it must remain powered, connected and available for the whole period. Sleep settings, updates, power cuts, router restarts and accidental cable changes are all practical failure points. If you use a VPS or another self-managed arrangement, you take responsibility for its operating system, software and recovery process. Our comparison of VPS versus a cloud streaming service for a nonstop YouTube channel can help you think through that division of responsibility.

A managed approach can remove the need to leave your own computer running. StreamNeo is designed for the specific pain of handing over a prepared file and stream key so a YouTube broadcast can continue while your computer is switched off, with automatic monitoring and restart when the stream drops. It is still your responsibility to use a rights-cleared source and check the channel; automatic restarting does not resolve a copyright interruption.

Use a simple monitoring routine after launch. Check the public watch page from a separate device, listen for the first transition, confirm that the title and thumbnail are correct, and review YouTube notifications. If the channel matters overnight, decide who will respond to an interruption and what they are allowed to change. Do not wait for a viewer to report a silent stream.

You do not need to make unsupported promises about an always-on channel. A reliable routine means identifying likely failures, testing recovery and checking the public result. It does not guarantee a particular uptime, audience, income or uninterrupted access to third-party services.

Choose the path that fits your goal

The table below separates the two paths before you spend time on the wrong setup.

Question Personal YouTube Music playback Public YouTube Live broadcast
Who is the audience You or people listening with your account and device Viewers who open the channel’s live stream
Main starting point YouTube Music station, album or playlist YouTube channel and Live setup
Screen-off or background use Depends on the playback entitlements shown for your account in India Depends on the broadcast continuing at the source, not on a listener subscription
Music permission question Whether your account may play the catalogue for personal listening Whether you may transmit each recording and composition to viewers
Equipment Phone, browser, speaker or television Authorised media source, YouTube Live event and a production method
Main failure to test Playback stopping after screen lock or app switching Copyright interruption, source failure, dropped connection or an unattended computer
Suitable result Private, on-demand or radio-like listening A viewer-facing live channel with its own watch page

Choose personal playback if your goal is to listen while studying, praying, travelling or working. Check the account feature first, then test the device and connection you will actually use.

Choose a broadcast if viewers need to find the music on your channel, see a branded visual or join a shared live session. In that case, make rights clearance the first production task, not an item to investigate after YouTube has flagged the stream.

If your goal sits between the two, define the audience. Sending a playlist to a television in your home is still personal playback. Publishing that playlist to a channel is broadcasting. The same song can therefore be suitable for one path and unsuitable for the other.

If the broadcast contains one long prepared video, use a production method that can keep that file and the YouTube event connected. If it needs a changing sequence, review the hand-off behaviour and test the transition. For visualiser-based channels, the guide to making a 24/7 Bollywood music live stream with visualiser effects covers the presentation problem, but it does not replace the rights check for the music.

Before committing, compare the operating options on the pricing page. When the file and channel are ready, start free — 24-hour trial, no card.

FAQ

Can I use YouTube Music to create a public continuous stream?

No. YouTube Music playback is a listener feature, while a public continuous channel uses YouTube Live. A subscription or background-play entitlement does not grant permission to rebroadcast the catalogue.

How do I keep YouTube Music playing in the background in India?

Check the playback features shown on your own account and confirm whether they include background play for the music content you want to use. Google’s India announcement dated 12 March 2026 distinguished Premium Lite’s rollout for most videos from YouTube Premium’s music-related background playback benefits, so do not assume that every account has the same entitlement.

Can I use copyrighted songs in a YouTube livestream?

Only when you have the necessary permission for that broadcast and the relevant rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, and a stream can be interrupted even when a licence exists if the channel needs to be allowlisted and has not been added.

Do I need an encoder for a 24/7 music stream?

Not necessarily. YouTube for Artists describes an encoder as a way to gain more control and customisation than a simple mobile or webcam stream, so treat it as a production choice. Whatever method you use, test the complete source, the connection and the recovery process before leaving the channel unattended.
