To let viewers gift memberships during your YouTube livestream, first enable channel memberships in YouTube Studio, if your channel is eligible. A viewer’s gift purchase is a separate step made in an eligible livestream or Premiere, and the recipient must have opted in.
India is listed as a location where eligible creators can use channel memberships, but that does not mean every Indian channel qualifies or every viewer will see a gifting control. Check what YouTube Studio and live chat actually show for your channel and account.
Check whether your channel is eligible
Use a computer to sign in to YouTube Studio and look for Earn > Memberships. The Memberships tab appears only for eligible channels. If it is missing, that is a signal to check your channel’s monetisation status and YouTube’s current feature requirements, not a reason to assume the feature is available to every creator in India.
YouTube’s published entry thresholds for the relevant YouTube Partner Programme route include 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the previous 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours on long-form videos over the previous 365 days or 3 million qualified public Shorts views over the previous 90 days. These are minimum thresholds, not an approval promise. Your channel must also be accepted into the programme and meet the separate conditions for memberships.
Other conditions include being at least 18, living in a location where memberships are available, and complying with YouTube’s commerce terms. YouTube also lists content restrictions: for example, videos set as Made for Kids and videos with music claims can be ineligible, and a channel with a significant number of ineligible videos may not qualify. Review the official channel memberships eligibility guidance rather than relying on a checklist copied from an older guide.
A channel built around music or long video loops should pay particular attention to claims and audience settings. A claimed track may affect whether a video counts as eligible membership content, even if the livestream itself is intended as background listening. If you are building a continuous music format, first understand how copyright claims can affect a YouTube livestream.
Open Earn > Memberships
Once your channel appears eligible, choose Earn in the left-hand menu of Studio, then open Memberships. YouTube documents this path for a computer browser; menu labels and availability can change, so use the current Studio screen as the source of truth.
If the tab is present, select Get started and follow the prompts. If you have recently been accepted into the YouTube Partner Programme, the memberships feature may not be visible immediately. YouTube says its activation review can take up to two days after YPP acceptance. That review period is different from the time needed for you to design levels or from a viewer’s gift purchase.
If the tab is absent, review your programme status, thresholds, location and channel content against the official requirements. Do not infer from another Indian creator’s screen that your own channel is already eligible; channels can differ in review status and in the content they publish.
Start setup and accept the commerce terms
The setup flow asks you to accept the Commerce Product Module, often shortened to CPM. This is part of creator-side setup. Read the terms presented in Studio and accept them only if you understand the conditions under which memberships are offered and paid for.
The CPM is not the same thing as a viewer agreeing to receive a gift. A creator enables memberships and sets the offer; a viewer separately chooses whether to buy gifts during a supported live experience; and each possible recipient must opt in before being eligible to receive one. Keeping those steps distinct makes it easier to diagnose what has and has not been turned on.
After accepting the terms, complete the remaining Studio prompts. YouTube may review your channel before the feature becomes active, so do not announce a gifting date based only on the moment you submit setup. Check Studio again later and verify that the membership options are live before telling viewers where to look.
Create levels and perks people can understand
YouTube’s setup guide asks creators to create membership levels and perks. Choose benefits you can deliver consistently: a members-only post, a regular behind-the-scenes update, or a clearly scheduled chat opportunity is easier to explain than a vague promise of special access whenever possible.
Write the terms so a viewer can see what changes between levels and what does not. If a perk depends on you being present at a particular livestream, say so. If your main channel is a continuous playlist, avoid suggesting that every viewer will receive a personal response while you are offline. A reliable, modest benefit is better than a detailed promise that becomes difficult to maintain.
For an India-based audience, check the price shown in your own Studio flow rather than copying an old screenshot. YouTube’s India pricing page lists multiple membership-level price points, and new tiers were introduced on a gradual basis. Those are channel membership levels, not a fixed gift checkout price list. A viewer should use the amount displayed in their own gift purchase flow.
| What you are setting up | Where it happens | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Membership eligibility and setup | YouTube Studio | Memberships appears and the setup prompts are complete |
| Levels and perks | Memberships setup in Studio | Benefits are clear and practical to deliver |
| A viewer’s paid gift | Eligible livestream or Premiere chat | The gifting control and checkout amount appear to that viewer |
| A recipient’s permission | Gift settings or live chat | Allow gifts is switched on for an eligible account |
If your memberships support a nonstop devotional, study or ambience channel, your streaming workflow still matters: a missed broadcast can interrupt the experience promised to members. For a separate look at keeping a channel running without leaving a local machine on, see the 24/7 streaming options for a channel in India. StreamNeo removes the need to keep your own computer running for a file-based 24/7 YouTube broadcast, which can help when an overnight stream would otherwise depend on a home PC staying online.
How viewer gift purchases and recipient opt-in work
A viewer does not buy a gift from your Studio membership setup page. They sign in, open an eligible livestream or Premiere on the channel, and look in live chat for Membership gifting. If the control is available, they can choose how many viewers to gift memberships to and complete the purchase shown in checkout.
YouTube describes the gift as granting access at the closest highest available membership level up to and including the US$9.99 level. Do not convert that into a static rupee amount in your instructions: the amount and available checkout options shown to a viewer are what matter. YouTube’s gifted memberships help page explains the purchase flow and the conditions attached to gifting.
Recipients are not selected simply because they are watching. YouTube says a recipient must be subscribed to the channel, have interacted with it recently and have opted in to allow gifts. The viewer can use ALLOW GIFTS in live chat or the pinned gifting control, or open Join > More > Gift settings on a channel or watch page and switch on Allow gifts. The same settings area can be used later to opt out.
There are account limits. A recipient needs to be signed in to a YouTube channel that is not a Brand Account, and an existing member of the channel cannot receive a gifted membership. If YouTube selects someone, it announces the gift in chat and sends an email notification. A gift provides up to one month of access, is non-recurring, and does not trigger a renewal charge when it ends.
The purchase has public elements. The gift count, purchaser’s channel name and profile image can be shown in chat, and information may also be shared with third-party services through the channel’s API access. Mention that visibility if your viewers ask whether giving a gift is anonymous.
Allow for activation time and test the flow
After YPP acceptance, YouTube says a review for memberships can take up to two days. It does not say setup becomes active instantly, so leave time between completing the steps and promoting the first gifting livestream. This is particularly useful if you have announced a scheduled devotional or news stream: check the feature before building a call to action around it.
Once memberships are active, test from a live or Premiere context and confirm whether the gifting control appears. The help documentation describes gifting in eligible livestreams and Premieres; it does not establish that every India-based viewer will see the option in every account or context. If it is absent, verify memberships are active and that you are checking the correct live experience. Avoid claiming a single cause without checking the channel and viewer account.
You can also review gift activity in Studio Analytics under Revenue > How you make money > Memberships, using the membership type breakdown and a selected date range. This helps you distinguish gifts from other membership activity. Do not treat a gift purchase as a recurring subscription: the gifted recipient’s access is temporary and does not renew as a paid membership.
Some channels may also see promotional gifts. YouTube’s help information says creators with a membership level below US$5 may receive promotional gifts to distribute, subject to the documented conditions; these gifts are not paid purchases and do not generate revenue. Check the current official gifting guidance for whether that option applies to your channel, rather than building a stream plan around it.
India-specific checks and common snags
India’s presence on YouTube’s creator availability list supports the possibility of memberships for eligible channels; it is not a blanket statement about eligibility or gifting availability. If a viewer cannot find Membership gifting, first check whether the channel’s memberships are active and whether the viewer is on a supported live or Premiere page. Then check the viewer’s account and checkout context. YouTube’s documentation does not establish one India-only explanation for a missing control.
A viewer who sees a country verification message at checkout can follow YouTube’s advice to try a different network or device and disable an active VPN or proxy. Separately, recurring membership payments in India may require payment details to be verified or entered again in line with RBI eMandate requirements. That note concerns recurring billing; it should not be presented as a universal explanation for failed gift checkout.
If your channel publishes music, remember that eligibility and rights are separate issues. A membership button does not make a track available for livestream use. Before scheduling a long-running playlist, review the practical considerations in adding background music to a silent video loop and confirm that you have the rights for the content you use.
For a 24/7 channel, also make sure the stream format itself is settled before inviting members to rely on it. A recorded loop that stops overnight can undermine a perk framed around a dependable listening or viewing space. The guidance on latency settings for a 24/7 Hindi news playlist is useful if your format depends on viewers receiving a live, rather than delayed, feed.
Before committing, compare the operating options on the pricing page. When the file and channel are ready, start free — 24-hour trial, no card.
FAQ
Does every Indian YouTube channel have gifted memberships?
No. India is listed for eligible creator use of channel memberships, but each channel must meet YouTube’s requirements and pass the relevant review. The availability of a gift purchase control can also depend on the live context and viewer account.
Where does a creator enable memberships?
On a computer, open YouTube Studio and choose Earn > Memberships. If the channel is eligible, choose Get started, complete the prompts and accept the Commerce Product Module when asked. Gift purchases themselves happen in eligible live chat, not in Studio.
Why might a viewer not receive a gift?
The viewer must be subscribed, have interacted with the channel recently, and opt in to allow gifts. They also need to use a non-Brand Account channel and cannot already be a member of that channel. A gift is not assigned to every person watching.
How long does setup take to become available?
YouTube says membership activation review can take up to two days after YPP acceptance. That does not mean every setup will activate instantly or that a gifting control will appear for every viewer. Check Studio and the actual livestream or Premiere before announcing that gifting is ready.
