If you want viewers to see YouTube chat beside your video in Streamlabs Talk Studio, enable the integrated Chat Box from Apps > Widgets, then select and position it on the canvas. Connect YouTube in your Streamlabs account settings as well; that is a separate step from adding the widget.

If you only need to read messages while producing, use Talk Studio’s Chat panel instead. It is an operator view, not the audience-facing overlay, and private chat with guests is not shown in the livestream.

Connect YouTube in Streamlabs account settings

Before adding the Chat Box, connect YouTube to your Streamlabs account. Streamlabs’ Talk Studio guidance points to Account Settings > Platforms for connecting supported social destinations, and its Chat Box documentation lists YouTube as a supported platform. See the Talk Studio Chat instructions and the Chat Box overlay guide for the documented workflow.

Sign in to the Streamlabs account you intend to use with Talk Studio, open Account Settings, and look for Platforms. Choose YouTube and follow the account connection prompts. The wording or placement of controls can change, so use the current account page rather than relying on an old screenshot or a remembered menu location.

There are two distinct connections to keep in mind. Connecting YouTube in Streamlabs account settings makes the platform available to Streamlabs; enabling Chat Box in Talk Studio adds the visible widget to the canvas. One action does not replace the other. If YouTube is not connected, the widget may not have the platform relationship needed for the intended chat source. If YouTube is connected but the widget is not enabled, there is nothing on the canvas for viewers to see.

This guide covers the Talk Studio route. If you are comparing that setup with a different continuous broadcast workflow, the OBS playlist method for looping devotional videos explains a separate way to run prerecorded material. It is not needed just to add a Chat Box in Talk Studio.

Open Apps and Widgets in Talk Studio

Open the Talk Studio session containing the video or production layout you plan to use. In Talk Studio, open Apps using the Shift+P shortcut, then choose Widgets. The documented path is Apps > Widgets > Connect Streamlabs. The Streamlabs integrated apps overview provides context for the Apps workflow.

Select Connect Streamlabs when prompted. If you are not already signed in or connected, complete the account step before returning to the widget list. You should then be able to switch on Chat Box. Keep the exact path in view: this is an integrated Talk Studio widget workflow, not the separate procedure for adding a browser source in another streaming programme.

The distinction matters if you have used Streamlabs overlays elsewhere. Streamlabs’ general Chat Box guide describes copying a widget URL and adding it as a browser source in other software. That is an alternative for software that uses browser sources. In Talk Studio, follow the integrated Apps > Widgets path instead; do not look for a URL to paste onto the Talk Studio canvas unless the current product documentation specifically directs you to do so.

Talk Studio also has a Chat button, opened with Shift+C. That button is useful when you want to read or respond to messages as the host while producing. It does not put the messages into the audience’s video. The public-facing Chat Box widget is the relevant control when the goal is for chat to appear beside the video in the stream output.

Connect Streamlabs and enable Chat Box

In the Widgets view, connect Streamlabs if required, then switch on Chat Box. The widget becomes an element you can work with on the main canvas. This is the point at which your production layout gains a chat area; connecting your YouTube account in settings alone does not place anything on that canvas.

The on-canvas widget and the operator chat panel serve different audiences. The panel is for you and your production team inside Talk Studio. The Chat Box is intended to be visible as part of the programme layout. Streamlabs explicitly distinguishes guest private chat from the stream: private chat is for guests and will not be displayed during the livestream. If your requirement is simply to keep messages available while you host, there may be no need to put them on screen at all.

Decide which result you want before adjusting the canvas. A devotional channel may want the video to remain uncluttered and keep chat in the host interface. A community Q&A or local discussion may want selected audience messages visible beside the presenter. A study stream may choose a small chat panel or omit it, depending on whether messages are part of the viewing experience. These are layout decisions, not guarantees about what YouTube or every viewer will display.

For a 24/7 channel, treat chat as a deliberate part of the scene rather than an automatic status indicator. A visible overlay does not mean every message will appear in every stream state, nor does it replace checking the live YouTube experience. YouTube’s own live streaming help notes that Live Chat is available on YouTube watch pages, not embedded players. That is a separate YouTube player behaviour, not a setting in the Talk Studio canvas.

Select, position, and resize the widget

After turning on Chat Box, select it on the main Talk Studio canvas. Drag its corners to adjust the size and place it alongside the video. The documented interaction is direct manipulation on the canvas: select the widget, then move or resize it to fit the composition. Do not assume that a particular pixel size, aspect ratio, or fixed safe area is prescribed by the documentation.

A useful first arrangement is to leave the video as the dominant area and put the chat in a narrower column beside it. Keep enough room for text to be legible without letting the overlay cover a face, captions, or the information viewers came to see. If the source video already has important content near one edge, place chat on the other side. Test with representative content rather than judging only from an empty box.

The right balance depends on the material. A presenter with a name banner or lower-third needs different space from a static music visual. A channel using subtitles should make sure the chat does not sit over the text. This is especially relevant when preparing a 24/7 stream with subtitles in prerecorded videos: the overlay should not obscure words that viewers need to follow.

Resize by dragging the widget’s corners, then check how the proportions feel at the scale viewers will actually use. A tall, narrow box can preserve video width but may leave long messages awkwardly wrapped. A wide box can accommodate text but reduce the visible video area. There is no universally correct layout; the trade-off is between readable chat and space for the programme.

If you cannot select the Chat Box or it does not appear, check that you enabled it in Apps > Widgets and that you are working in the intended Talk Studio session. Then confirm the Streamlabs connection and review the current interface documentation. The research available for this guide does not establish every account, browser, or regional eligibility condition, so a missing control should not be treated as proof that a particular workaround exists.

Configure appearance and platform selection

For appearance and content choices, open the Streamlabs Dashboard and go to All Widgets > Chat Box. The documented controls include platform selection, visual style, font colour, and font size. Use the dashboard controls for those settings rather than assuming the canvas handles every detail.

First, review platform selection and confirm YouTube is included for the intended display. Then choose a visual style and text treatment that can be read against your video. Contrast matters more than decoration: pale text over a bright scene or dark text over a dark background can disappear. If the dashboard offers appearance choices, check them against the actual footage rather than a neutral preview.

Font size is a practical trade-off. Larger type helps viewers reading on a small screen, but it also consumes more of the video layout and can cause messages to occupy more vertical space. Smaller type preserves the picture but may be difficult to read. Make a modest adjustment, return to the canvas, and inspect the result before making another change.

Platform selection and destination connection are related but not interchangeable. The account settings connection establishes YouTube as a connected platform in Streamlabs; the Chat Box configuration determines which platform’s chat the widget is set to use. Check both places. Avoid assuming that adding a different destination to a multistream setup will automatically make its messages appear in the Chat Box, or that selecting YouTube makes all chat behaviour identical across platforms.

If you use the same account for other streaming software, keep the procedures separate. The Streamlabs overlay guide’s widget URL and browser-source instructions are relevant to software that accepts a browser source, not a reason to add an unverified extra layer in Talk Studio. For a different question about keeping a long-running YouTube broadcast active while changing content, see how to keep a YouTube live stream active while replacing its playlist; playlist continuity and chat placement are separate concerns.

Check the overlay before going live

Before starting the broadcast, inspect the full composition in Talk Studio. Confirm that the video is visible, the Chat Box sits where you intended, and its edges do not cover essential on-screen text. If you adjusted font colour or size in the Dashboard, look again at the canvas so the changes are evaluated in context.

Check the two chat surfaces separately. Use Chat or Shift+C to see the operator panel if you need to monitor conversation privately. Then inspect the canvas to confirm the audience-facing widget is present. A populated operator panel does not prove that the overlay is enabled, and a visible widget does not turn guest private chat into public stream content.

Where possible, verify the actual YouTube watch page during a test or rehearsal. This is a practical check, not a promise that every message will show in every state. A YouTube watch page and an embedded player do not offer the same Live Chat surface according to YouTube Help, so consider where your viewers will watch before deciding that the overlay is missing. For a continuous channel, also make sure your review does not interrupt a broadcast that viewers are already using.

If something looks wrong, change one part at a time. Confirm the account connection under Platforms, verify Chat Box is switched on through the Talk Studio widget path, and revisit platform and appearance selection under All Widgets > Chat Box. Then return to the canvas to assess placement. Changing several settings at once makes it harder to identify which setting affected the result.

Talk Studio’s documented route is valuable because it keeps the widget setup focused on the production canvas and the Dashboard controls. For a different operating problem, such as a broadcast dropping while software changes playlist items, the playlist disconnect troubleshooting guide addresses that separate failure mode. It should not be read as a fix for chat display.

If the layout and channel are ready, decide how you will operate the stream overnight or during a long session before committing.

FAQ

Does the Chat button put YouTube chat on the video?

No. The Chat button or Shift+C opens the Talk Studio chat panel for the operator. To show chat on the programme canvas, enable the integrated Chat Box through Apps > Widgets > Connect Streamlabs.

Do I need to connect YouTube and enable Chat Box separately?

Yes. Connect YouTube under Streamlabs Account Settings > Platforms, then enable the Chat Box in Talk Studio. The first step connects the platform to the account; the second adds the audience-facing widget to the canvas.

Where do I change the Chat Box style and text?

Open the Streamlabs Dashboard and go to All Widgets > Chat Box. The documented options include platform selection, visual style, font colour, and font size. Check the result on the Talk Studio canvas after changing a setting.

Why might chat not appear for a viewer?

The documented setup does not guarantee that chat appears in every stream state or viewing context. Check the connection, widget toggle, platform selection, and canvas, then consider where the viewer is watching: YouTube says Live Chat is available on watch pages, not embedded players.
