How to Verify an Indian YouTube Channel for Live Streaming

Follow YouTube’s India phone-verification steps, then check the separate requirements that control live-stream access.

For an India-based YouTube channel, the usual verification route is YouTube Studio → Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility → Intermediate features → VERIFY PHONE NUMBER. You then choose a text message or voice call and enter the code YouTube sends.

That successful phone check is necessary for ordinary live-stream access, but it is not the whole eligibility decision. YouTube also checks for recent live-streaming restrictions, applies a minimum age of 16 for the person streaming, and may take some time to activate live streaming for a new channel.

What phone verification does for live streaming

Phone verification confirms that you control a phone number associated with the channel. YouTube places this within its intermediate feature tier, which includes live streaming, custom thumbnails and uploads longer than 15 minutes. It is the relevant verification step for getting basic access to live streaming; buying equipment or choosing a streaming application does not replace it.

The important distinction is between verification and eligibility. Entering the correct code proves that the phone check was completed. It does not cancel a live-streaming restriction, change the age requirement, or guarantee that every live feature is immediately available. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says that a channel must have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days and that the person streaming must be at least 16 years old.

For example, an Indian devotional channel may complete phone verification in the morning and still find that its first broadcast is not ready to start immediately. That does not necessarily mean the code failed. The channel owner should return to Feature eligibility, read the status shown there, and check the live-streaming requirements separately.

Phone verification is also different from advanced-feature verification. YouTube may offer advanced access after sufficient channel history or through identity verification by ID or video where available. Those are routes for additional features and higher limits, not the default live-streaming step. Do not begin by submitting identity documents unless Studio specifically asks for that as part of a separate advanced-feature process.

Open Feature eligibility in YouTube Studio

Start from the Google account that owns or controls the YouTube channel. If you manage several channels, check the channel switcher before opening settings. A phone number verified for one channel does not automatically verify every channel you can access.

On a computer, open YouTube Studio and follow this path:

  1. Select Settings in the left-hand menu.
  2. Select Channel.
  3. Open Feature eligibility.
  4. Expand Intermediate features.
  5. Select VERIFY PHONE NUMBER.

The labels can change slightly as YouTube updates Studio, but Feature eligibility is the useful destination. It is where YouTube shows which feature tier is available to the current channel, rather than merely showing that a Google account exists.

If you are working from a Brand Account, use the channel’s owner account where possible and follow the role prompt displayed by Studio. YouTube’s help pages distinguish roles for phone verification and for advanced identity verification. The safest practical approach is to perform the action from the channel owner’s account, not from a manager account that may have limited access to a particular workflow.

Do not confuse this account check with the production setup that comes afterwards. A webcam, encoder, console or mobile device is a choice of broadcast method. It affects how you produce the stream, not whether YouTube has verified the channel. If you plan to use OBS later, the OBS scheduling guide for YouTube Live in India is a separate workflow to read after access is confirmed.

Verify by text message or voice call

After selecting VERIFY PHONE NUMBER, enter a phone number that can receive either an SMS or an automated voice call. Select the delivery method offered by YouTube, submit the request, and wait for the verification code. Enter the code in the same verification window rather than copying a different code from an earlier attempt.

YouTube’s India-specific help explains that completing this process adds a “phone verified” label to the channel’s About page. YouTube says that label is visible to users in India on computer, mobile and the YouTube app, and connects it with the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. Treat that as YouTube’s explanation of its label. It is not a broader statement that your channel is legally compliant or approved for every type of content.

A text message is often the simplest route, but voice call is an official alternative when SMS delivery is delayed or unsupported. YouTube notes that some mobile operators may not support its messages. If the code does not arrive, wait briefly, request a fresh code, and try the voice-call option rather than repeatedly submitting an old code.

There is also a phone-number association limit. YouTube says one phone number can be associated with no more than two channels per year. If Studio reports that the number has reached its limit, repeated attempts with that same number will not solve the problem. You will need to follow YouTube’s current instructions and use another eligible number if one is available.

Avoid treating a purchased phone or SIM as a guarantee of access. The useful question is whether the number can receive YouTube’s verification message or call and whether it has not reached YouTube’s association limit. A phone, microphone or encoder can improve a broadcast, but none of them verifies the channel.

Use youtube.com/verify as an alternative

YouTube also describes a browser route at youtube.com/verify. Sign in with the Google account connected to the channel, choose India if YouTube asks for a country, enter the phone number, choose text message or voice call, and submit the code when it arrives.

This route is useful when you cannot find the button in Studio or when you want to start from YouTube’s direct verification page. It does not create a different kind of verification. Whether you begin in Studio or at the browser address, the result should still be checked against the channel’s Feature eligibility page.

If you have several channels under one Google account, confirm which channel is active before assuming the result applies to the one you intend to stream from. Open Studio afterwards, switch to the intended channel if necessary, and inspect its settings. A successful verification on the wrong channel is still the wrong result for your broadcast plan.

The browser route also does not bypass YouTube’s other checks. It cannot remove a live-streaming restriction, lower the minimum age, or force an immediate activation. If the direct page reports that you are verified but the live option remains unavailable, use Studio to find the more specific feature status.

Confirm that the code was accepted

Do not stop at the moment the confirmation screen appears. Return to YouTube Studio and open Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility again. Expand the relevant feature sections and read the status shown for the channel.

You are looking for evidence that phone verification has been recorded and that intermediate features are available or being activated. YouTube’s feature-access page may also show limits or access conditions. Daily limits can vary by access tier, so the appearance of intermediate access should not be interpreted as unlimited use of every YouTube feature.

You can also check the channel’s About page for the “phone verified” label described by YouTube for India-based channels. That is a useful confirmation, but Feature eligibility is the better place to check operational access. The two pages answer slightly different questions: the About label reflects the verification status visible to viewers in India, while Studio shows the channel’s feature access.

If you are preparing a 24/7 channel, keep a record of what Studio shows before you schedule anything. Note the channel you verified, the date of the check and any warning displayed beside live streaming. This is not a guarantee of future access, but it prevents a common mistake: assuming that a code entered successfully means the first broadcast has already passed every check.

Once the account side is ready, test the actual programme separately. A loop may need clean joins, suitable audio levels and a fallback plan. The 48-hour burn-in test for a 24/7 setup is relevant here because verification says nothing about whether your content or workflow will survive overnight.

Check live-streaming status and restrictions

After phone verification, check the live-streaming status itself. YouTube says the channel must have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. A restriction may be connected to a previous broadcast or to enforcement of YouTube’s policies, so the verification page alone may not explain it.

The three practical conditions to check are:

Check What it means Where to investigate
Phone verification The channel has completed the intermediate verification step Studio → Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility
Recent live-streaming record YouTube has not applied a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days Studio notices, live-streaming status and YouTube’s policy messages
Age of the person streaming The person starting the live stream must be at least 16 The account and live-streaming eligibility information

YouTube also says live streams must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. A channel may therefore be verified and still face action if a broadcast breaks the rules. Do not describe phone verification to a client, family member or business partner as approval of the planned content.

For an Indian music, news-loop or devotional channel, review the material before going live. Check that you have the rights needed for music, images, clips and recordings, and read YouTube’s current policy pages rather than relying on an old upload that happened to remain online. Verification is an account-access step, not a copyright clearance process.

Do not send viewers towards ID verification as the normal answer when the only problem is basic live-stream access. YouTube documents ID or video verification within advanced features where available. Those methods are not a replacement for the ordinary phone-verification flow described here, and YouTube does not make advanced identity verification available to every creator.

After access is confirmed, choose the broadcast method that fits the channel. Mobile streaming suits a creator working from a phone. A webcam is direct for a computer presentation. An encoder is useful when you need overlays, external audio or several sources. A console is relevant to console gameplay. These choices affect production rather than verification.

If your main concern is leaving a computer switched on all night, deal with that as a separate operational decision. StreamNeo removes the need to keep your own computer running by taking an uploaded video and continuing the YouTube broadcast after you provide the stream key, with automatic monitoring and restart if the stream drops. It does not change YouTube’s verification or content rules.

Allow time for first activation

YouTube may not make live streaming usable the instant phone verification succeeds. Plan for an activation period and read the message shown in Studio instead of assuming that an absent live button means the number was rejected.

The correct response is to check Feature eligibility again, then look for any live-streaming restriction or instruction connected with the channel. If YouTube tells you to wait, allow that process to complete before repeatedly changing settings. If it shows a restriction, waiting alone will not remove it; you need to understand the notice and follow YouTube’s current appeal or policy guidance where applicable.

Use the waiting period to prepare the broadcast without publishing it. Confirm the video dimensions, audio track, title, thumbnail and privacy setting. For an always-on channel, decide what happens when the programme reaches its end, how you will handle a silent section, and who can respond if YouTube sends an alert overnight.

A channel that is technically eligible can still fail as a practical broadcast. A devotional loop may restart with an abrupt audio cut. A local news loop may display yesterday’s headline. A study station may continue with a blank scene after the source file ends. Resolve those issues before you interpret the first activation as permission to run unattended.

You can also keep the first test modest. Start with an unlisted broadcast if that suits your workflow, confirm that the picture and sound reach YouTube, and then decide whether the channel is ready for a public schedule. The visibility setting is a publishing choice, not a way to bypass verification or restrictions.

When a channel later runs continuously, connection and application failures become separate problems. If you use OBS on your own computer, read the guide on keeping a YouTube stream running when OBS crashes. It addresses continuity after eligibility, not the phone check itself.

Before committing, compare the operating options on the pricing page. When the file and channel are ready, start free — 24-hour trial, no card.

FAQ

Does phone verification guarantee that I can live stream?

No. It is the normal verification step for intermediate features, including live streaming, but YouTube also checks for live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days and requires the person streaming to be at least 16. Check Feature eligibility and the live-streaming status shown for the channel.

What should I do if the SMS code does not arrive?

Request a fresh code and try the voice-call option. YouTube says some mobile operators may not support its messages, so a different operator or delivery method may help. If the number has already been associated with two channels in the year, follow YouTube’s instructions and use another eligible number.

Is youtube.com/verify different from verifying in Studio?

It is an alternative route to the same phone-verification process. You can use the browser page when the Studio button is difficult to find, then return to Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility to confirm the channel’s status.

Do I need ID or video verification to start a live stream?

Not normally. Phone verification is the ordinary prerequisite described for basic live-stream access. ID or video verification belongs to YouTube’s advanced-feature process where that option is available, so use it only when Studio specifically presents it for the feature you need.
