OBS Portable Settings Backup for a 24/7 YouTube Playlist PC

Set up OBS portable mode on Windows and back up profiles, scenes, media and plugins without treating them as one complete copy.

OBS portable mode keeps OBS configuration with the application on a Windows PC, which makes it easier to copy or restore the setup. It does not bundle the videos, images or other files your scenes refer to, so back up those assets separately.

For a playlist PC, keep several complementary copies: the portable OBS folder, an exported Profile, the Scene Collection, and every external media file. A backup is useful only if you can find the copies and restore them, so test the process before depending on the machine overnight.

What OBS portable mode stores

In a standard installation, OBS keeps its configuration separately from the application. Portable mode instead stores the configuration in the OBS folder. That is useful when you want to keep settings with a particular installation or move a prepared setup between locations. It does not make every dependency portable, and it does not change how YouTube receives a stream.

Think of the setup as four related parts. The Profile contains stream, video and output settings. The Scene Collection contains scene and source arrangement. The portable folder includes the application and its portable configuration. Media such as a video loop, logo, background image or audio file may be stored somewhere else on the PC. Plugins add another dependency if your scenes or workflow use them.

These parts matter differently when restoring. A Profile export cannot recreate your scenes; a Scene Collection cannot supply missing video files; and a copied OBS folder does not necessarily contain assets referenced by absolute file paths. The OBS portable mode guidance makes clear that scene media is not made portable automatically.

For a channel that plays a recorded bhajan programme or a local information loop, write down where the playlist media lives and which scene uses it. If you later move the OBS folder to another drive, the application may open while a media source still points to the old location. Configuration backup and content backup are separate jobs.

Download and extract the ZIP

Start with the Windows ZIP distribution from the official OBS Project download page. Choose the build that matches your Windows system, then extract it to a folder you control, such as a dedicated folder under your user profile or a data drive. OBS advises against using Program Files for portable mode.

Use a path that is easy to recognise and unlikely to be renamed casually, for example D:\OBS-Playlist. The exact folder name is your choice. Avoid extracting into a temporary downloads folder or a location that is regularly cleaned. If the PC has multiple drives, remember that the OBS folder and the video archive have distinct backup needs even if they happen to sit on the same drive.

After extraction, inspect the top level of the folder. It should contain OBS application files and folders, rather than an extra wrapper folder that leaves you digging through nested copies. If you accidentally end up with a path such as D:\OBS-Playlist\obs-studio\bin, do not assume that top-level directory is the application root. Locate the extracted OBS root before adding portable mode or creating shortcuts.

Keep the original downloaded ZIP if practical, but do not mistake it for a configuration backup once you have made changes in OBS. The ZIP is the starting application package; your portable folder accumulates configuration and possibly plugins as you use it. Your backup routine should copy the current folder, not just retain the untouched download.

Enable portable mode

OBS supports two portable-mode approaches on Windows. You can create an empty file named portable_mode or portable_mode.txt in the OBS root folder, or launch bin/64bit/obs64.exe with the --portable parameter. The file method is straightforward for a setup that will always run from the extracted folder.

To use the file method, open the folder where the OBS root files are located, create a new empty text file, and name it exactly portable_mode or portable_mode.txt. Windows may hide known file extensions, so check the actual filename if the file appears as portable_mode.txt.txt. The file does not need content; its presence signals portable mode.

If you prefer a launch parameter, make a shortcut to the 64-bit executable and add --portable after the executable path in the shortcut target. Do not remove the quotation marks around a path that contains spaces. If you are unsure which approach is active, close OBS and reopen it using the intended portable path, then confirm that your profile and scenes are the expected ones.

Portable mode is a location choice for configuration, not a safety mechanism. It does not automatically create a second copy, check whether copied files are readable, or restore a failed setup. The practical benefit is that the configuration has a predictable home beside the application, which is easier to include in a folder-level backup.

Launch OBS portably

For ordinary use, launch OBS from the portable folder, either by opening bin/64bit/obs64.exe or through a shortcut that points to it. Make sure the shortcut targets the copy you intend to run. If an older standard OBS installation is also on the machine, opening that one can make it look as though settings or scenes have disappeared when you are actually viewing a different configuration.

You can give the shortcut a clear name such as “OBS playlist portable” and keep it separate from any standard OBS shortcut. When OBS opens, check the selected Profile and Scene Collection and make sure the preview shows the expected sources. If you use a playlist source or media files, confirm that the files can be read from their current paths. This is a simple check, not a guarantee that the stream will keep running unattended.

OBS documents a --startstreaming launch parameter. Its launch-parameter guide also says that Windows scheduled tasks and other automated launches should use the folder containing obs64.exe as the working directory. If you configure a scheduled launch, follow that guidance and test it while you can watch the PC. Starting OBS or requesting that it start streaming does not establish that a YouTube account, stream key, playlist source, Windows restart or network connection will behave as you intend.

A portable setup also does not remove the need to understand the separate YouTube workflow. For instance, a Windows launch setting is not the same as a process that recovers from a host reboot; those are different tasks, as discussed in our guide to restarting a YouTube playlist stream after a VPS reboot. If you use a PC rather than a VPS, test the relevant power, login and network conditions on that PC instead of assuming the VPS steps apply unchanged.

Back up the folder, Profile and Scene Collection

Make a second copy of the complete portable OBS folder on separate storage. This is the broadest single copy in the checklist because it preserves the application folder and portable configuration together. Separate storage might be an external USB backup drive or another location you control. Copy the folder after meaningful changes, and verify that the copied files are present and can be opened; a drive sitting beside the PC is not itself a backup until you have copied the data to it.

Export the active Profile as a JSON file as an additional, narrower backup. Profiles contain stream, video and output settings, and OBS provides an export function for backing them up or using them on another OBS installation. The official Profiles documentation explains the Profile scope and export. Give the file a descriptive name that identifies the channel and the date you exported it, and store it away from the only copy of the OBS folder.

A Profile does not include scenes. Preserve the Scene Collection separately using OBS's scene collection controls, and confirm which collection is active before you save or export it. Scene Collections hold the arrangement of scenes and sources, but source references may still point to files outside OBS. If you have several channel layouts, label the saved collections so that a restoration does not leave you guessing which is the playlist setup.

Backup item What it preserves What it does not replace
Portable OBS folder copy Application folder and portable configuration together Separate copies of media stored elsewhere; a verified restore test
Profile JSON export Stream, video and output settings Scene Collection, external media and the complete application folder
Scene Collection copy Scene and source arrangement Referenced videos, images, audio files or plugins
Media and asset copy Referenced content files OBS settings, scenes or application files
Plugin record and files, where needed A note of plugin dependencies and their files Compatibility checks or confirmation that the plugin works after restore

If you use plugins, record their names and versions and keep track of where they are installed. OBS's plugin guide and its plugin location guidance describe the current portable layout and note that older locations are legacy. Plugin availability can depend on platform, architecture and OBS version, so check compatibility when restoring rather than assuming a copied scene can use every plugin as before.

Restore testing should be deliberate. Work from a copy of your backup, not the live folder that is currently broadcasting. Open the restored OBS folder, select the intended Profile and Scene Collection, and inspect each source for missing-file indicators or unexpected paths. If possible, test the setup without relying on it for a live audience. A successful launch is evidence that the application opened, not proof of an automated recovery plan or uninterrupted streaming.

Back up referenced media files

Make a separate inventory of every external file used by your scenes: playlist videos, logos, still images, audio beds, overlays and any other local content. A source can appear correctly in the Scene Collection while its actual file remains in a different folder. Portable mode does not collect these dependencies into the OBS folder, so copy them deliberately.

Preserve a sensible folder structure where possible. For example, keep a channel's logo and loop videos under a named media folder, then include that folder in the separate backup. If you move the files, open OBS and check the source properties so each path points to the new location. Do not delete or rename the originals until you have confirmed the copied files work in the intended scenes.

This distinction is especially important if a PC is used for several programmes. A devotional stream might use one set of video loops and a small business channel another; copying the OBS folder alone does not mean either set has travelled with it. A missing logo may be obvious in preview, while a missing clip may only become apparent when that source is meant to play. Check each scene, not only the opening scene.

For a playlist that should change at a particular time, the playlist logic and the file paths deserve their own test. Our article on changing a video playlist without interrupting a YouTube live stream addresses the playlist side; a portable backup is still about preserving the OBS setup and its dependencies. Likewise, if your concern is playback behaviour between clips, see why a YouTube live showroom can show a black screen between clips.

A useful media checklist is to compare the sources visible in each scene with the files in your media backup. Confirm that the backup includes the full files rather than shortcuts, and that the files are readable from the backup location. If your source uses a folder of assets, include the folder contents rather than only the folder icon or a shortcut to it. Keep a note of any files intentionally stored elsewhere, such as on a separate media drive.

When the OBS folder and media have been copied, perform a restore rehearsal using the copy and a test location. If a source is missing, note its old and new path and correct the reference in OBS. This rehearsal can reveal omissions before you need the backup, but it cannot guarantee that the PC will restart, reconnect to YouTube or maintain a broadcast without interruption.

Make the backup usable after a failure

A backup plan should say where each piece lives and how you would put it back. Keep a short note with the folder location, the Profile and Scene Collection names, the media location, and any plugins the scenes require. Do not put sensitive stream credentials into a note that is stored casually or shared; use a secure method appropriate to your account and follow the current YouTube guidance for managing access.

Set a reminder to refresh the copies after changes that affect the stream, scenes, media or plugins. A new overlay, a revised output setting or a replaced playlist file can make last month's copies incomplete. There is no universal schedule that suits every channel: the more often the setup changes, the more often you should create and verify a new copy.

If OBS settings are your only obstacle but the Windows PC itself is the thing you cannot leave running, a local portable backup will not solve that operational constraint. StreamNeo removes the specific need to keep this OBS playlist PC powered on by turning an uploaded video into a YouTube live stream that runs with your computer off; it does not make OBS portable mode include scene media or guarantee uninterrupted streaming. It is YouTube-only, so check that this fits your workflow before choosing it.

FAQ

Does OBS portable mode include my playlist videos?

No. It keeps OBS configuration alongside the application, but it does not automatically package the media files referenced by scenes. Back up the videos and other assets separately, then check their paths after moving or restoring the setup.

Does exporting a Profile save my scenes?

No. A Profile export is for settings such as stream, video and output configuration; scenes are stored separately in a Scene Collection. Keep both, along with the media the scenes reference.

Can OBS start streaming automatically when Windows launches it?

OBS documents the --startstreaming parameter, and its launch guidance gives a working-directory instruction for Windows scheduled tasks. Those are launch mechanics only; test the full arrangement and do not treat them as proof that YouTube, media playback or reboot recovery will work unattended.

Is portable mode available on macOS or Linux?

The OBS portable-mode guidance documents this portable approach for Windows and says portable mode is unsupported on macOS and Linux. Check the current OBS documentation for platform-specific options before planning a move.
