Neither Streamlabs Desktop nor OBS Studio is documented as universally more reliable for a 24/7 YouTube broadcast. Choose based on your workflow, existing scenes, computer, connection and familiarity, then test the exact configuration you plan to leave running.

YouTube lists both as software encoders. That confirms they are options for sending a live stream to YouTube; it is not evidence that either one wins an endurance test or will recover from every interruption.

Short answer: choose for your own setup

A useful comparison starts with the work you need the software to do. If you already have a scene collection, know where its settings are, and can troubleshoot it, that familiarity may count for more than a different application’s guided setup. If you are starting from scratch, onboarding and import tools may make initial setup easier. Neither point proves long-run reliability.

A 24/7 channel can be deceptively simple. A devotional music loop might show one image and play a long audio file, while a local news channel may rotate clips, graphics and captions. Both are live streams, but they place different demands on scenes, media playback and the computer. A sensible choice for one format may not suit another.

The same caution applies to India. The reviewed official documents do not establish that one desktop encoder performs better on Indian connections or hardware. Your ISP, local power, route to YouTube, computer and room conditions matter to your own test, but they do not support a national performance claim.

Both are YouTube encoder options

YouTube’s encoder directory lists Open Broadcaster Software and Streamlabs among its software encoders. YouTube explains that an encoder can manage a more advanced production and connect external audio and video hardware. OBS is described there as open-source software available at no charge; Streamlabs is listed as a software encoder. These are useful documented distinctions, not a comparison of uptime.

The directory also lists cloud-based services for prerecorded 24/7 video. That matters if you want a file to play continuously but do not want to keep a desktop computer running. A desktop encoder gives you a local production workflow; a cloud playout service may suit a different operating model. Check the services’ current terms, features and availability for your situation rather than treating their appearance in YouTube’s list as an endorsement.

If the content is prerecorded, think through the whole publishing routine as well as the encoder. The guide to keeping a 24/7 stream fresh is relevant when a channel needs a planned rotation rather than one unchanging file. That editorial decision can affect how you prepare media and scenes, independently of which desktop app sends the stream.

Setup and interface workflow

Streamlabs offers guided onboarding and says users can import OBS scenes and profiles. That can reduce the work of recreating a setup if you are moving from OBS, or provide a more directed route through initial configuration. It does not mean Streamlabs will choose settings that suit every connection, scene or sustained workload; review what the setup selects and test it.

OBS publishes an Auto-Configuration Wizard for choosing settings based on your hardware and goals. It is a starting point rather than a guarantee. You still need to understand what your sources are doing, select a suitable encoder and verify the result in YouTube’s live control interface.

Interface preference is practical, not trivial. During a fault at an inconvenient hour, you need to find the audio mixer, scene sources, stream status and relevant settings without guessing. Spend time navigating the menus before committing to an unattended schedule. If you are the only person who operates the channel, choose the layout you can reliably understand and document for your future self.

For a first test, make a short private or unlisted broadcast and check the full path: start the encoder, confirm that YouTube receives video and audio, inspect the health messages, and stop the test cleanly. Repeat after meaningful changes. A change to a scene, codec, frame rate or media source can alter the workload, so yesterday’s successful test is not proof that today’s altered setup behaves the same way.

Existing scenes, profiles and media

If you already use one application, count the value of working scenes and profiles before switching. A scene may include media sources, text, browser elements, transitions, audio routing and filters. Rebuilding each element takes time and introduces opportunities for a source to be missing or configured differently. Streamlabs’ import option is relevant if you are transferring OBS scenes and profiles, but inspect the imported result rather than assuming every source behaves identically.

A scene that looks simple can still be demanding. Animated overlays, browser-based elements, filters and multiple media sources add work. OBS notes that CPU demand varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. Streamlabs likewise notes that workload and other running programs affect performance. The documents do not provide a controlled head-to-head test, so keep the production no more elaborate than it needs to be and test the actual scene.

Build a test scene that represents the heaviest part of your normal broadcast. If a news loop uses a lower-third graphic and a transition between clips, include those. If a bhajan channel has animated artwork and layered audio, include those. A test with a blank scene cannot tell you how the full production will behave.

Recording deserves separate thought. YouTube cautions that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and recommends keeping a local recording backup. Do not assume that either application will produce a complete archive without checking disk space, recording format, file splitting and restart behaviour. For more on the local workflow, see recording a Streamlabs broadcast, then test your own storage plan.

Computer and connection for sustained use

Published minimum requirements are not a promise of continuous-stream stability. OBS lists operating-system and graphics compatibility, while warning that a compatible system is not necessarily capable of streaming. Streamlabs’ support guidance gives its own Windows and macOS requirements and notes that needs vary with workload. These lists are not directly comparable benchmarks, and neither replaces testing your actual machine and scenes.

Close applications you do not need during the test and observe the computer under the same conditions you expect overnight. Watch encoder load, dropped frames, temperature, audio continuity and disk use. A laptop that works in a brief daytime check may behave differently when left plugged in for hours, with power settings, ventilation or background updates involved. Check sleep and restart settings so that the operating system does not interrupt the planned broadcast.

The upstream connection is equally important. YouTube recommends running a speed test and selecting quality the connection can sustain. A speed result is only a snapshot; test at times representative of your usual broadcast and keep an eye on stream health while the test is live. Streamlabs recommends Ethernet. A wired connection can remove reliance on Wi-Fi between the computer and router, but it cannot fix ISP congestion, upstream outages or local power cuts.

For H.264, YouTube’s recommended encoder settings give these bitrate ranges:

Video format H.264 minimum bitrate H.264 recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These figures are YouTube recommendations for H.264, not a promise that your upload connection can sustain them. The settings page gives different ranges for AV1 and H.265, so do not apply an H.264 number to another codec. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data to and through Google’s servers, and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Check the current page when configuring the encoder, since settings and guidance can change.

Test the exact configuration before committing

A realistic test is more useful than choosing on reputation. Use the same machine, scene, encoder settings, audio path and connection you intend to use. Include representative movement and sound: a static artwork loop may be light on graphics work, but music still makes audio continuity essential; a news loop should include its clip changes, overlays and transitions.

YouTube recommends testing representative audio and video, then monitoring stream health and messages. For a 24/7 plan, extend that into a multi-hour test before relying on unattended operation. Observe whether frames are dropped, whether warnings appear, whether the computer stays within acceptable operating conditions, and whether audio remains continuous. Then simulate or observe recovery from a network interruption if you can do so safely. Official guidance does not promise either desktop application will recover from every failure automatically.

Record what you test: application version, operating system, scene, encoder, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, connection type and any warnings. This makes a later change easier to diagnose. If you swap a router, add a browser source or raise the resolution, repeat the parts of the test affected by that change.

Keep YouTube’s archive limit separate from encoder choice. A single uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so if a complete replay matters, maintain a local recording and verify its storage and rotation. Alternatively, consider planned shorter sessions if that suits the channel. The guide on stopping and restarting a scheduled 24/7 stream can help you think through that schedule, but you should confirm how your own broadcast and archive behave.

Do not treat continuous broadcast time as a monetisation shortcut. YouTube applies its monetisation rules to live streams, and its policies address original, authentic work as well as repetitive or reused material. A loop being live for long periods does not itself establish eligibility or earnings. For India, check YouTube’s current YPP eligibility information and the conditions for the specific feature you want to use.

Choose an operating model you can maintain

Desktop OBS or Streamlabs makes sense when you want to operate the production on your computer, use its scenes and sources, and can keep the machine and connection available. The trade-off is that the broadcast depends on that local setup. You are responsible for the computer’s power, software updates, media paths, monitoring and response when something stops.

If your channel is simply a prerecorded file that should keep playing while your computer is off, a desktop encoder may not be the right workflow. StreamNeo turns an uploaded video into a 24/7 YouTube live stream, so you do not have to leave your own computer running for that playout. It is YouTube-only; this is relevant when the specific pain is maintaining a desktop for a prerecorded channel, not when you need a live production with interactive scenes or local capture devices.

Whichever route you choose, plan how you will notice a failure and what you will do next. Keep access to the channel and stream key appropriately controlled, document the restart steps, and make sure someone can check the broadcast. For a desktop setup, a successful test is evidence about that configuration under those conditions, not a guarantee against future network, power or software problems.

Before committing, compare the operating options on the pricing page. When the file and channel are ready, start free — 24-hour trial, no card.

FAQ

Is Streamlabs Desktop more reliable than OBS for a 24/7 stream?

The reviewed official documentation does not establish that either application is universally more reliable for continuous streaming. Both are listed by YouTube as software encoder options. Test the scenes, computer and connection you will actually use.

Can I move OBS scenes and profiles into Streamlabs Desktop?

Streamlabs says it offers a one-click import for OBS scenes and profiles. After importing, check media paths, audio, overlays and transitions, then run a representative test. An import feature does not establish that every source will behave identically.

Will YouTube save the full replay of a 24/7 stream?

Do not rely on YouTube to capture a complete replay of one continuous event longer than 12 hours. YouTube says such a stream may not be captured at all and recommends a local recording backup. Test recording space and file rotation if the archive matters.

Does a 24/7 stream qualify for monetisation in India?

Continuous duration alone does not guarantee monetisation. YouTube’s policies apply to live streams and address original, authentic content, while India-region eligibility and feature rules can change. Check the current official requirements for your channel before making plans.
