How to Keep a 24/7 Children’s Stream Running When OBS Updates

Plan OBS and Windows maintenance safely, preserve your stream setup, and test recovery without promising a gap-free restart.

A 24/7 children’s stream should not depend on an update prompt being handled at the moment it appears. Keep OBS updates and operating-system updates under separate maintenance plans, then use a planned restart and a tested recovery procedure rather than relying on an automatic relaunch.

An OBS update does not normally erase your settings, but an update, restart, security tool, or unrelated system change can still interrupt the broadcast. The practical aim is to choose when maintenance happens, preserve the files OBS needs, and verify the stream after it starts again.

Choose a maintenance window

Start with a maintenance window that is part of the channel schedule, not an emergency decision made at midnight. For a children’s channel, check the planned cartoons, devotional programmes, lessons, or language blocks and choose a period when an interruption will affect fewer viewers. Tell anyone responsible for the schedule when the window begins and what should be visible afterwards.

Do not treat a quiet period as a guarantee that the stream can be stopped without consequence. YouTube may show the live broadcast as interrupted while OBS is closed, and viewers may need to reconnect. A planned pause is easier to explain and investigate than an unexpected disappearance, but it is still a pause.

Before updating, write down the intended state:

  • Which OBS profile should be loaded.
  • Which scene should be live first.
  • Which YouTube channel and stream key are being used.
  • Which video, audio, overlays, and media files the scene references.
  • Who will confirm that the broadcast is visible after the restart.

If the channel is used for a church, school, or community service, the maintenance window may need to be agreed with someone who does not operate OBS. A simple handover note can prevent a well-intentioned person from starting the wrong scene or updating the machine during a scheduled children’s programme.

The same principle applies to a pre-recorded loop. The file may be ready, but the live system still has to open the correct profile, load the correct scene, connect to YouTube, and produce both picture and sound. A useful preparation step is to follow a test plan for an Indian music YouTube stream and adapt its checks to your children’s content.

Separate OBS update checks from other updates

OBS has its own update-check setting. The interface includes “Automatically check for updates on startup”, which controls whether OBS checks for a newer OBS release when the application opens. OBS also documents a launch parameter named --disable-updater for Windows and macOS. These controls concern the OBS updater only.

Turning off that check can keep an update prompt from appearing during an unattended launch, but it does not freeze the computer. It does not stop Windows updates, driver updates, antivirus changes, or other software from requesting a restart. It also does not mean that the current OBS version will remain suitable for every future change on the machine.

Use the setting deliberately rather than treating it as a permanent substitute for maintenance. One reasonable arrangement is to disable surprise checks on the machine that runs the channel, record the OBS version in your maintenance notes, and check for OBS releases during the planned window. Another is to leave checks enabled but ensure that the machine is attended when OBS starts. The safer choice depends on who can respond when a prompt appears.

When you do update OBS, use the official OBS launch parameters documentation for the current syntax and supported platforms. The documentation is more reliable than a copied command from a forum, particularly if the command is placed in a shortcut or scheduled task.

Avoid making a change without recording how to reverse it. Note the original shortcut target, the profile in use, and the date of the change. If the channel starts normally for several maintenance cycles, keep the notes anyway. A recovery procedure is most useful when the person operating it is tired, away from the computer, or not the person who made the original setup.

Understand the Windows updater launch option

The Windows launch option deserves careful handling because it is easy to confuse application behaviour with system maintenance. --disable-updater tells OBS not to use its built-in update-check behaviour in the documented circumstances. It is not a Windows policy and it is not a promise that Windows will leave the computer running.

If you add a launch option, first make a copy of the existing shortcut or command. Check that the executable path remains intact and that the option is added in the correct place for that shortcut. Then open OBS manually and confirm that the expected profile, scenes, sources, and output settings are present. A command-line change that prevents a prompt is not useful if it launches the wrong configuration.

The option is also platform-specific. OBS documents it for Windows and macOS, while the exact procedure for a Linux installation should not be inferred from a Windows shortcut. If your channel uses Linux, use the operating system’s own launch method and consult the current OBS documentation rather than copying a Windows command.

The launch option also does not decide whether OBS should stream automatically. That is a separate concern. OBS documents --startstreaming, which can ask OBS to begin streaming when it launches. Combining launch options can support a controlled recovery, but it increases the importance of checking the selected profile, destination, scene, and credentials before leaving the computer unattended.

Do not assume that a relaunch creates a continuous handover. OBS must close, start, load its configuration, establish an ingest connection, and be accepted by YouTube. There can be a visible gap, the connection can fail, or the wrong scene can open. A launch command is an aid for recovery, not evidence that the broadcast will remain uninterrupted.

Manage Windows updates as a separate job

Windows updates need their own maintenance plan. Microsoft explains that updates cannot be stopped entirely, although active hours and restart scheduling can move automatic restarts to a more suitable time. Use the current Windows Update FAQ when checking the available controls, because the wording and location of settings can change.

Set active hours around the hours when the children’s stream must be available, but do not read active hours as a permanent block. Windows may still need a restart to finish an update, and a restart scheduled for a convenient time can still interrupt OBS if the broadcast is running. The purpose is to make the restart predictable enough to include in your maintenance window.

Before applying Windows updates, check whether the machine has pending restart notices. A system that has been waiting for a restart is not in the same state as one that has merely downloaded files. If a restart is required, include it in the planned procedure rather than updating OBS and assuming the computer will remain online.

Keep the two records separate:

Control or procedure What it controls What it does not guarantee
OBS automatic update check Whether OBS checks for its own updates at startup That Windows or another application will not restart the computer
OBS --disable-updater The documented OBS updater behaviour on Windows and macOS That OBS will launch with the correct scene or stay connected to YouTube
Windows active hours and restart scheduling The timing of some Windows update activity and restarts That updates can be stopped forever or that streaming will not pause
OBS --startstreaming Starting a stream when OBS launches A successful ingest, correct content, or zero downtime
OBS portable mode Keeping OBS configuration with the application directory on Windows Including scene media files automatically or solving operating-system updates

The table is a planning aid, not a list of guarantees. Each control has a narrow purpose. If the computer restarts because of Windows maintenance, suppressing OBS’s update check will not prevent that restart. Conversely, scheduling Windows carefully will not decide whether OBS checks for a new version when it opens.

After a Windows update, check more than the desktop. Confirm that the display resolution, audio device selection, storage paths, network connection, and OBS output settings are as expected. OBS notes that other system software can interfere with operation. Its help guidance identifies antivirus interference as one troubleshooting possibility, not as a diagnosis that applies to every failed update.

Preserve the OBS configuration and media

A recovery plan is only as good as the configuration it can restore. Preserve the scene collection and profile used by the channel, and make sure you know where the exported copies are stored. Keep a written note of the scene order, the intended media source, audio sources, output settings, and the YouTube destination.

OBS says that updates should leave settings intact, but a backup gives you a way to investigate if the expected profile is missing or a source has become unavailable. Back up before maintenance, not after discovering that the updated installation has a problem.

Pay particular attention to file paths. A scene can load successfully while showing a blank source if its video, image, font, or audio file has moved. Keep local media in a stable folder and avoid changing drive letters or renaming the folder during the same maintenance window. For a children’s loop, check the exact file that should be playing, not merely the OBS preview frame.

OBS portable mode stores configuration alongside the application on Windows. That can make a deliberately maintained installation easier to move or restore, but portable mode does not automatically package the scene media files referenced by your sources. The OBS portable mode documentation also states that portable mode is available for Windows and is not supported on macOS or Linux.

Portable mode is therefore a configuration choice, not a complete backup. If you use it, preserve the application directory and the separate media directory, and document how they relate. If you do not use it, export or copy the relevant OBS configuration and keep the media at known paths. Either approach needs a test on the same computer that will run the channel.

Do not assume that a backup has worked because a file exists. Open the copy when practical, inspect the profiles and scenes, and confirm that the source paths are still meaningful. If the configuration includes credentials or a stream key, handle the backup as sensitive material and do not leave it in a broadly shared folder.

Build a deliberate recovery procedure

Recovery should be written as a sequence that another person can follow. A basic procedure might be:

  1. Confirm whether the computer restarted, OBS closed, or only the connection to YouTube dropped.
  2. Wait until the machine is responsive and the network connection is available.
  3. Open the intended OBS profile and check the first scene in the preview.
  4. Confirm that the media source is playing and that the audio meters respond.
  5. Start streaming, either manually or through a controlled --startstreaming launch procedure.
  6. Check that YouTube reports an active ingest and that picture and sound are present.
  7. Record the time, cause if known, and any setting that changed.

The --startstreaming parameter can reduce a manual step after OBS opens, but it should be used only after the normal launch has been tested. If the wrong profile is selected, automatic streaming may send the wrong material to the channel. If a credential has expired or the network is unavailable, the parameter cannot fix that problem.

A relaunch can restart the stream, but it cannot guarantee zero downtime. It may take time for the computer to restart, OBS to load, and YouTube to accept the ingest. Viewers may see an interruption, and the platform may not present the resumed broadcast exactly as you expect. Make the recovery target “restore and verify promptly”, not “prove that no gap occurred”.

Test the procedure with an unlisted or otherwise controlled broadcast before using it on the public channel. The guide on testing a live stream without going public is useful for checking the launch sequence without making every rehearsal part of the public schedule. Test the actual profile, media paths, audio devices, and launch method where possible.

A second useful rehearsal is a deliberate OBS close and reopen during a low-risk period. Observe whether the correct scene returns, whether the loop begins at the intended point, and whether the stream status becomes active. Do not infer that a successful manual restart proves recovery from a Windows update, a network failure, or a damaged configuration. Those are different failure conditions.

Check the stream after maintenance

The first check is local: is OBS open, on the intended profile, showing the expected scene, and producing audio? A frozen preview, missing media, or silent audio meter is a failure even if the application window looks normal.

The second check is at YouTube. Confirm that the live control room or channel view reports an active broadcast and that the incoming picture and sound are correct. If possible, use a separate device or connection so that you are not relying only on the computer running OBS. A local preview cannot prove that the ingest has reached YouTube.

The third check is content-specific. For a children’s stream, watch long enough to confirm that the loop advances, speech is intelligible, subtitles or overlays are readable, and the intended material is playing. A stream that reconnects with a blank scene is technically connected but operationally wrong.

If the update leaves OBS behaving differently, avoid changing several things at once. Read the OBS logs, compare the current profile with the preserved copy, and note recent changes to Windows, drivers, antivirus, or audio devices. OBS’s help material includes antivirus interference as one possible area to investigate and suggests checking whether OBS is allowed, but that does not establish antivirus as the cause in your case. Consult the OBS Help portal for the current troubleshooting guidance.

Keep a short maintenance record with the date, OBS version, Windows update state, profile used, result, and any recovery action. The record helps you identify a repeated failure without relying on memory. It also makes handover easier if the person who normally operates the channel is unavailable.

If repeated restarts are the underlying problem, consider whether the stream should be moved away from a computer that must remain switched on. A cloud-based arrangement can remove the need to keep your own computer running, as explained in whether a 24/7 YouTube streaming service can run while your PC is off. It does not remove the need to check the channel, content rights, settings, and recovery expectations, but it changes which local maintenance risks you need to manage.

FAQ

Does turning off OBS update checks stop Windows updates?

No. The OBS setting and the documented --disable-updater option concern OBS’s own update-check behaviour. Windows updates, restart requirements, drivers, and other system software are managed separately, so configure Windows active hours and restart scheduling independently.

Will --startstreaming prevent a gap in the broadcast?

No. It can ask OBS to start streaming when it launches, which may help a planned recovery. It does not guarantee that the computer restarts quickly, the correct profile loads, YouTube accepts the ingest, or viewers see no interruption.

Does portable mode back up all the files in a children’s stream?

No. OBS portable mode keeps OBS configuration with the application directory on supported Windows installations, but scene media files are not made portable automatically. Preserve the video, images, audio, fonts, and other referenced files separately, with stable paths.

What should I check after an update?

Check the profile, scene, media playback, audio meters, output settings, and YouTube’s active ingest status. Then watch the actual content long enough to confirm that the loop and sound continue, and record any change that you had to correct.
