Channel memberships in India are set up in YouTube Studio under Earn > Memberships, but that tab is shown only when YouTube considers the channel eligible. You must first check the current requirements, then accept YouTube’s Commerce Product Module and configure your levels and perks.

Choosing the levels is not only a pricing exercise. You are making recurring promises to members, and YouTube may review the membership feature separately after you accept the YouTube Partner Programme terms, so setup does not necessarily mean immediate activation.

Check whether memberships are available

Sign in to YouTube Studio on a computer and open the Earn section. If Memberships is available in the menu, open it and review the information shown for your channel. If the tab is missing, do not assume that a setting is hidden or that you can activate memberships through a direct link.

YouTube applies feature-specific eligibility rules. A channel can meet some monetisation requirements and still not receive access to every feature. YouTube also says that reviewers may withhold a feature where the channel or its content does not meet the relevant requirements.

The official YouTube channel memberships guidance is the right place to check the current position before changing your content plan. The page and the Earn section are more reliable than an older tutorial, because YouTube can change thresholds, availability and the Studio workflow.

For an always-on channel, also consider whether the content gives people a reason to join rather than simply something to watch. A devotional loop, a local news bulletin, a study station or a recorded coaching stream may have a loyal audience, but the membership offer still needs a clear benefit beyond public viewing. If your channel relies on a continuous recorded feed, review the practical choices in this guide to a low-cost 24/7 recorded coaching stream before promising members-only material.

Confirm the current eligibility requirements

As listed on YouTube Help in September 2026, the current channel membership thresholds include:

  • at least 500 subscribers
  • at least three public uploads in the past 90 days
  • either 3,000 qualified public watch hours from long-form videos in the past 365 days or 3 million qualified public Shorts views in the past 90 days

Those figures are only part of the check. YouTube also lists being at least 18, living in a country where memberships are available, accepting the Commerce Product Module, and meeting its channel and content requirements.

Meeting the listed thresholds does not guarantee access. YouTube says that eligibility is feature-specific and that a feature can be withheld during review. Treat the thresholds as a point at which YouTube may assess the channel, not as an automatic approval formula.

You can review the wider YouTube Partner Programme requirements on YouTube’s official monetisation page. Check the current India-specific information in your own account as well, particularly if your channel has warnings, repeated content, copyright claims or material that may not qualify for the feature.

Check the channel rather than only the numbers

Before you plan tiers, inspect the channel as a reviewer and as a potential member would. Are the public uploads regular enough for the audience to understand what they receive? Are the videos substantially your own work? Can you explain what a member gets each month without relying on vague access to “exclusive content”?

This matters for channels that use loops or repeated broadcasts. A continuous stream can be useful, but membership perks such as members-only videos or posts still need to be original and deliverable. If your channel is built around bhajans, check the rights position for both the public stream and any members-only uploads before you build a tier around them. A guide to looping bhajans on YouTube Live with OBS can help with the broadcast mechanics, but it does not replace a rights check.

Open Earn and Memberships in Studio

Once the Memberships tab is available, use a computer and follow this route:

  1. Sign in to the YouTube account that manages the channel.
  2. Open YouTube Studio.
  3. Select Earn in the left-hand menu.
  4. Open Memberships.
  5. Select Get started.

The labels can change slightly as YouTube updates Studio, so use the option that corresponds to Memberships rather than relying on an old screenshot. If more than one channel is connected to your Google account, confirm the channel name and profile image before continuing.

The first screen may explain the feature, its requirements and the next terms you need to accept. Read the available information before selecting the setup button. If the page tells you that the channel is still under consideration, stop there rather than assuming that creating a tier will bypass the review.

Keep your proposed structure to hand before you begin. You should know the audience problem each level solves, the price point shown for India, what is included, and how often you can deliver it. This makes the Studio form quicker to complete and reduces the chance of launching a promise that you later need to withdraw.

Select Get started and accept the CPM

For first-time setup, YouTube requires acceptance of the Commerce Product Module, commonly shortened to CPM. It is part of the terms governing commerce features such as channel memberships. Read the terms presented in Studio and accept them only when you understand the obligations attached to selling recurring digital benefits through YouTube.

Accepting the CPM is a required setup step, not a notice that your memberships are already live. You may still need to complete the levels and perks, submit the feature for review, and wait for YouTube to activate it.

The CPM also does not transfer responsibility for your content to YouTube. You remain responsible for making accurate promises, using content you have the right to use, and following the platform’s current policies. If you work with a multi-channel network, read its terms separately before assuming that the displayed proceeds are the amount your business will receive.

YouTube says creators receive 70% of membership revenue recognised by Google after applicable taxes and fees are deducted, while YouTube currently covers transaction costs such as credit card fees. As listed on YouTube Help in September 2026, a creator in an MCN should check the network’s terms because the MCN may take an additional share. This is a revenue-share description, not a forecast of what you will earn from a particular audience.

Design levels and perks people can understand

YouTube permits up to six membership levels. As listed in YouTube’s official guidance in September 2026, many creators begin with one to three levels before adding more. Starting smaller is usually easier to explain and easier to operate, especially when your channel is run by one person.

Each higher level should add a specific benefit. The lower level must still be worthwhile on its own, and the benefit should not depend on you doing work every day that you cannot sustain. Perks stack as members move to higher levels, so write down what each member receives at each step rather than describing only the top tier.

Possible benefits documented by YouTube include badges and emoji, members-only posts, videos, Shorts and live streams. You can also decide which membership levels can watch a members-only video. YouTube says those videos must be fully original and must not contain copyright-claimed content.

A practical structure might look like this:

Level design India price point Concrete additional perk Delivery question
Entry level ₹59 Member badge, emoji and occasional members-only post Can you maintain the posts without making a daily promise?
Regular supporter ₹119 Everything above, plus a scheduled members-only update or live session Can the format be repeated when the channel is busy?
Higher-access level ₹239 Everything above, plus a more substantial original members-only video Can you produce it consistently without using claimed material?

These are examples of how to separate benefits, not a recommendation that these prices or levels will suit every channel. YouTube’s India price schedule contains multiple points, and the best choice depends on your audience, subject and delivery cost.

Ask the audience before launch. YouTube suggests using a members-only post or poll to find out which benefits people value. For a Marathi podcast, that might mean asking whether listeners prefer early episodes, a question-and-answer stream or behind-the-scenes notes. For a meditation or ambience channel, you might test whether people value ad-free original uploads, a quieter members-only stream or a regular community post. Do not promise the result of a poll until you have checked the work involved.

The benefit should be repeatable at scale. A personal reply to every member may be manageable for a small audience and unworkable later. A scheduled post, a monthly original video or a members-only live session may be easier to deliver consistently, but only if you have the time and suitable material.

If your channel runs continuously, separate the public broadcast from the membership promise. A 24/7 feed does not automatically create a 24/7 members-only obligation. You can keep the main stream public while offering a defined, less frequent benefit that you can plan and review. This is also where a multi-channel library strategy can help you think clearly about which material is original, reusable and appropriate for each audience, without promising that one piece of content belongs everywhere.

Choose an India price point carefully

YouTube’s India page labels its revised schedule New channel membership pricing. As listed on YouTube’s site in September 2026, the displayed India price points are:

Price group Available points
Lower points ₹59, ₹119, ₹179, ₹239, ₹299, ₹359, ₹419, ₹479
Middle points ₹599, ₹799, ₹1,199, ₹1,599, ₹1,999, ₹2,399, ₹2,799
Higher points ₹3,199, ₹3,599, ₹3,999, ₹7,999, ₹11,999, ₹15,999, ₹19,999, ₹23,999, ₹31,999, ₹39,999

YouTube says the revised India schedule began rolling out gradually in May 2025. Its information also distinguishes the new schedule from previous prices and warns that pricing can depend on when a member joined. Therefore, do not assume that every existing member sees the same price as a new member.

For a new setup, use the country-specific options that YouTube presents in your current Studio flow. Do not copy an old tutorial that shows ₹29, ₹89, ₹159 or another legacy price and assume that the same choice will appear for you. The official India pricing information should be checked again when you configure the levels.

Price the work, not only the audience size. Write down the expected creator time, any production cost, whether the benefit can be repeated, and whether it uses fully original material. A high price with a vague benefit is harder to justify than a lower price with a clear schedule, but a low price can still become burdensome if every member expects individual service.

YouTube’s guidance says a creator can adjust prices for new members once every 12 months from the last update, under the policy it describes. Existing members remain at their original price under that described policy. As listed on YouTube Help in September 2026, this makes the initial decision consequential: explain the level before launch and avoid treating the first price as something you can change every week while you learn.

There is no official formula that identifies the price most likely to produce the best result for every Indian channel. Treat the first structure as a measured test with your audience. Explain the benefit publicly, invite questions, and review whether you can deliver it before adding another level.

Allow time for review and activation

After you accept the CPM and complete the setup, membership activation may not be immediate. YouTube notes that activation can take up to two days after YouTube Partner Programme acceptance because the membership feature may be reviewed separately.

That timing is an expectation to plan around, not a guarantee that every channel will activate within the same period. If the feature remains unavailable, check the status shown in Studio and the current official help pages rather than repeatedly rebuilding the levels.

Do not announce a launch date to your audience until the feature is visible and the member-facing pages show the correct benefits. If you are preparing a live event, leave room for a delayed review. This is particularly important for channels that broadcast continuously: your public stream can keep running while the membership feature is still under review, so do not present the two states as one approval.

Once memberships are active, inspect the member view if YouTube provides it in Studio. Check the level names, prices, visible perks and access rules. Test every promise against the content you intend to publish. A members-only video with a copyright claim, an incorrectly restricted live stream or a benefit that appears at the wrong level can create avoidable support work.

A tool that keeps a prerecorded YouTube broadcast running may solve a separate operational problem, but it does not make a channel eligible for memberships or replace the membership review. If your issue is keeping your computer off while a long-form stream continues, read about running a meditation stream while your computer sleeps. The membership setup still happens in YouTube Studio and remains subject to YouTube’s rules.

Before committing, compare the operating options on the pricing page. When the file and channel are ready, start free — 24-hour trial, no card.

FAQ

How do I set membership levels on YouTube in India?

First confirm that Memberships is available in YouTube Studio. Then open Earn > Memberships, select Get started, accept the Commerce Product Module, and follow the on-screen steps to create levels and perks.

How many membership tiers should I create?

YouTube allows up to six levels, but its guidance suggests starting with one to three. Begin with the smallest structure you can explain and deliver reliably, then add a level only when it provides a distinct benefit.

Does meeting the subscriber and watch requirements guarantee memberships?

No. The thresholds are part of the eligibility check, not a guarantee of access. YouTube applies feature-specific requirements and may withhold a feature during review.

How long does membership activation take?

YouTube says activation may take up to two days after YouTube Partner Programme acceptance because memberships can be reviewed separately. That is not a promise of approval or a guarantee that every channel will activate within that time, so check the status in Studio and the current official guidance.
