Sign in to YouTube Studio on a computer, open Settings → Channel → Features, and choose Verify phone number under Features that require phone verification. YouTube will send a code by text message or voice call, and phone verification unlocks live streaming as a channel feature.
That verification is necessary, but it is not the only condition for going live. You must also have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, be at least 16 to start the stream, and allow time for first-time activation. If you plan to use the YouTube mobile app, separate subscriber and device rules apply.
What channel phone verification does
Phone verification connects a telephone number to your YouTube channel so YouTube can provide access to intermediate features. YouTube lists live streaming among the features available after phone verification. It is a channel-level step, not a test of your video, equipment, internet connection or planned broadcast.
This distinction matters for an always-on channel. Verification can make the Live option available, but it does not create the video file you intend to broadcast, configure an encoder, solve copyright questions or keep a computer running overnight. Those are separate parts of the setup.
For example, a devotional channel may have a finished bhajan loop and a suitable thumbnail, but still be unable to start its first broadcast because the channel has not completed phone verification. After verification, the owner still needs to check channel standing and wait for activation before scheduling or starting the stream.
YouTube’s phone-verification guidance describes this as access to features that require verification. The page also separates phone verification from advanced-feature checks. Do not assume that completing one automatically completes the other.
A Brand Account has an additional permissions detail. YouTube says the owner or a manager of a Brand Account can phone-verify its channel. For a channel that is not a Brand Account, the channel owner must complete the verification. If you manage several channels, first check that the correct channel is selected before entering a number.
The number is associated with verification rather than with the content of the channel. YouTube says one phone number can be linked to no more than two channels per year for verification, as listed on YouTube Help in October 2026. If the number has already been used for two channels during that period, choosing another delivery method will not remove that limit.
Open Feature eligibility in YouTube Studio
Use the desktop route when you want the clearest view of the channel’s status. The labels can change slightly as YouTube updates Studio, but the relevant path is:
- Sign in to the Google Account that owns or manages the channel.
- Open YouTube Studio.
- Select Settings from the left-hand menu.
- Choose Channel.
- Open the Features or Feature eligibility area.
- Find Features that require phone verification.
- Select Verify phone number.
If you have several channels under one Google Account, use the channel switcher before opening Settings. A successful verification on a different channel will not necessarily unlock live streaming on the channel you are preparing.
The Feature eligibility page is useful because it shows more than a single verification button. It helps you distinguish the basic phone-verification tier from advanced features, and it may show whether a feature is available, enabled or waiting for further action.
Do not look only at the general account settings. A Google Account can be active while an individual YouTube channel still needs verification. Similarly, a channel can be phone-verified while live streaming remains unavailable because of a recent restriction or because first-time activation has not finished.
If the channel is managed by another person, confirm who has the required role before troubleshooting the phone. On a Brand Account, a manager may be able to complete the step. On a non-Brand channel, ask the owner to sign in and perform it. This avoids repeatedly requesting codes from a number belonging to someone who does not have permission to verify that channel.
Once you reach the verification screen, keep the Studio tab open. You may need to return to the Feature eligibility page after entering the code so that the status refreshes. If the page still looks unchanged, sign out and back in only after checking that the verification process itself reported completion.
Verify by text or voice call
Select the country and enter a phone number that can receive the available verification method. YouTube may offer a text message or a voice call. Choose the method that is more dependable where you are. A voice call can be useful when text delivery is delayed, while a text can be less disruptive if the number belongs to a shared office or family phone.
Enter the code exactly as received. Do not forward a verification code to another person, and do not enter a code from an earlier request if you have asked YouTube to send a new one. If several messages arrive, use the most recent code that belongs to the current screen.
After YouTube accepts the code, complete any remaining prompts and return to Settings → Channel → Features. The phone-verification section should now show the feature as available or enabled. Then inspect the live-control area to see whether the option to start a live stream is present.
If the code does not arrive, check the country selection and number before requesting another message. Make sure the phone has a signal and that the carrier is not blocking service messages. YouTube notes that not all mobile carriers support its text messages or voice calls, so repeated attempts may not help if the carrier cannot deliver them.
You can also try the other offered method. If text delivery fails, a voice call may work. If neither method works, use YouTube’s account-verification help and follow its troubleshooting route rather than using an unrelated third-party verification page.
The phone number is not a substitute for channel ownership. Never give another person access to your Google Account simply because they offered to verify the channel. If someone else manages a Brand Account, assign the appropriate channel role through Google’s normal account controls and let that person complete the step from their own authorised sign-in.
Phone verification is also different from identity verification for advanced features. YouTube says advanced features may require sufficient channel history or identity verification by ID or video where those options are available. YouTube also says ID or video verification is not offered to everyone. If your immediate goal is to unlock live streaming, begin with phone verification and only investigate advanced features if Studio specifically asks for them.
Confirm that live streaming is enabled
After the code is accepted, open the live-control area in YouTube Studio. You may reach it through Create → Go live, or through the live-streaming option shown in Studio. The important check is whether YouTube lets the channel begin the live setup, rather than whether the phone-verification panel merely says that a number is attached.
If the live option is available, choose the method you actually intend to use. YouTube supports webcam, encoder and console streaming as well as mobile streaming. A computer webcam is appropriate for a direct camera broadcast. An encoder is more suitable when you need a prepared video loop, separate audio controls or a source that runs through streaming software.
The verification step does not tell you whether a particular computer can carry an overnight broadcast. For a pre-recorded devotional, news or study loop, you still need to decide where the video will originate and how it will reach YouTube. If your plan uses OBS, the YouTube stream-key settings for an always-on loop cover the next stage after eligibility.
If you are preparing a continuous channel, do not confuse channel eligibility with a finished broadcast. You may still need to create a live event, select visibility, add a title and description, choose the correct stream key and test the audio. A channel can be allowed to go live while the intended programme remains unsuitable because the file has a silent section, an incorrect aspect ratio or copyrighted material you do not have permission to use.
For video-based channels, test the actual file before committing to a long broadcast. The guidance on video format and bitrate for a nonstop YouTube stream is relevant after verification because it deals with the media and connection side, not the account-eligibility side.
If Studio presents a notice instead of the live setup, read the wording carefully. “Verify your channel” points back to the phone-verification step. A notice about a restriction, age or feature access requires a different response. Taking the verification test again will not clear a Community Guidelines or copyright restriction.
Check the other live-streaming requirements
YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, as listed on YouTube Help in October 2026. This is why verification alone does not guarantee that the Live control will appear.
Review channel standing and any notices in Studio. Look for restrictions related to Community Guidelines, copyright or previous live broadcasts. A restriction may have a defined status or explanation in Studio. Use that information rather than guessing from the absence of a button.
The person starting the stream must be at least 16, as listed on YouTube Help in October 2026. This requirement concerns the person initiating the live stream, not simply the age of the Google Account holder or the age of people who appear in the programme. If younger people appear on camera, read YouTube’s current child-safety guidance separately.
The streaming method also changes which requirements matter. YouTube describes computer webcam, encoder, console and mobile routes separately. A computer stream should not automatically be judged by the mobile app’s subscriber requirement. Conversely, meeting the computer requirements does not remove the extra conditions for starting a stream from a phone.
| Streaming method | Main eligibility point to check | Equipment or access to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Computer webcam | Channel verification and no recent live restriction | Computer with a working webcam and microphone |
| Computer encoder | Channel verification and no recent live restriction | Streaming software, prepared source and reliable connection |
| Console | Channel verification and the console’s YouTube connection | Supported console account link and capture or console workflow as applicable |
| YouTube mobile app | Verification, no recent restriction and mobile rules | Supported phone, the required subscriber level and the YouTube app |
The table separates eligibility from equipment. A webcam does not verify a channel, and a phone number does not make a weak connection suitable for a full-night stream. If you use a computer, you can investigate the media path independently, including how to run a 24/7 YouTube stream on a Mac or how to configure an encoder.
You should also review the content itself. Phone verification does not grant permission to rebroadcast music, television, sports footage or other material. If you are building a replay channel, check the rights to every source before scheduling a long broadcast. You can read the discussion of old cricket highlights as replay channels for the separate content-rights issue.
Allow for first-time activation
A newly enabled live-streaming feature may not be usable immediately. YouTube says the first activation can take up to 24 hours, as listed on YouTube Help in October 2026. Treat this as an activation window, not as a promised start time or an uptime commitment.
If you need a stream to begin at a particular hour, verify the channel well in advance. Waiting until a few minutes before a devotional programme, local news loop or overnight study session leaves no practical time to resolve an account notice, replace a failed phone method or correct a stream setting.
During the waiting period, prepare the non-account parts of the broadcast. Confirm that the video plays from beginning to end, check that the audio is audible without clipping, and make sure the planned title and visibility are correct. If the programme is a loop, decide what should happen when the file reaches its end. The guide to repeating a video in OBS without restarting the YouTube stream is useful for that specific workflow.
Return to Studio after the activation period and check the live area again. If the option is still unavailable, do not assume that waiting longer will resolve a restriction. Recheck the feature status, channel standing, account role and the exact method you are trying to use.
A first successful broadcast is not the same as a tested 24/7 operation. Begin with a short private or unlisted test where that fits your workflow, then inspect the result for missing audio, incorrect framing and unexpected privacy settings. A test can reveal a production problem without suggesting that YouTube has rejected the channel.
Review mobile-specific requirements if applicable
The YouTube mobile app has additional conditions. YouTube lists at least 50 subscribers for mobile live streaming, along with channel verification, no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days and a supported device, as listed on YouTube Help in October 2026. The 50-subscriber condition is specific to the mobile method and should not be applied automatically to computer webcam or encoder streaming.
YouTube lists Android 8.0 or later and iOS 8 or later among its mobile device requirements, as listed on YouTube Help in October 2026. Check the current mobile live-streaming requirements before relying on an older phone. The app, operating system and device support can change independently of your channel verification status.
YouTube also says mobile streams from channels with 50 to 999 subscribers may have a limited audience, and archived streams may be set to private by default, as listed on YouTube Help in October 2026. After a channel reaches 1,000 subscribers, YouTube says removing those limitations may take several weeks. These are mobile-streaming conditions, not a general rule that blocks every computer broadcast from a smaller channel.
This distinction is important for small businesses and devotional channels. If your phone does not show the Live option because the channel has not reached the mobile threshold, you can examine whether a computer webcam or encoder route is appropriate instead. You must still meet the general channel requirements, and the computer route may require different equipment and preparation.
Mobile streaming is also a different operational choice for an always-on channel. A phone is convenient for a local event or a short field update, but it may not be the right source for a pre-recorded loop that should continue while you sleep. Battery, heat, mobile data, notifications and physical placement all become part of the practical setup.
If your channel is intended to run continuously from a prepared file, consider the origin of the stream before buying equipment. A USB webcam can help with a computer camera broadcast, but it is not needed to verify the channel or unlock live streaming. For a pre-recorded station, the more important questions are how the file is supplied, how the broadcast is monitored and what happens after a connection drop.
When the computer can be switched off but the YouTube broadcast still needs to continue, StreamNeo removes the specific burden of leaving your own machine running: upload the file, add the YouTube stream key, and let the channel run while the service monitors and restarts the broadcast if it drops. It remains a YouTube-only option, and you should still complete YouTube’s own eligibility and content checks.

FAQ
Does phone verification guarantee that I can go live?
No. YouTube lists phone verification as a requirement, but you must also have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days and meet the age requirement. A newly enabled channel may also need up to 24 hours before its first live stream is available.
How many subscribers do I need to stream from a computer?
The 50-subscriber minimum is listed for mobile live streaming, not automatically for computer webcam or encoder streaming, as listed on YouTube Help in October 2026. For a computer broadcast, check verification, channel standing, the selected streaming method and the equipment required for that method.
Why has my verification code not arrived?
Check the number, country and delivery method, then try the offered voice-call or text option. YouTube notes that some mobile carriers do not support its messages or calls, and one number can be linked to no more than two channels per year for verification, as listed on YouTube Help in October 2026.
Is phone verification the same as advanced-feature verification?
No. Phone verification unlocks intermediate features, including live streaming. YouTube treats advanced features as a separate tier that may involve channel history or ID or video verification where available.
